British craftsmanship, refined luxury and an Art Deco spirit collide at this prestigious five-star hotel in the heart of London. Occupying a prime Mayfair position, the West End, designer-lined Bond Street and Buckingham Palace are all just a short meander away. The Athenaeum itself exudes contemporary charm. Spacious rooms and suites cater to all of life’s luxuries, with views over verdant Green Park or character-filled Mayfair. Residences – the hotel’s luxurious serviced apartments – are found inside the adjoining Victorian red-brick buildings. These polished spaces offer a private entrance, separate bedroom and living areas, 24-hour in-room dining, plus full access to the hotel’s facilities. Dining comes courtesy of the hotel’s restaurant, 116 at The Athenaeum, with menus championing the very best British produce. The royally-inspired afternoon tea has become something of a London tradition, served with artisan tea, picture-perfect pastries and an array of sweet and savoury treats. Across the lobby, The Bar at The Athenaeum is a tranquil hideaway, promising cocktails created by an award-winning barman and more than 100 rare and intriguing whiskies. Sumptuous seating areas offer an insider’s look at The Athenaeum’s Living Wall – a vertical garden that covers an entire exterior wall of the hotel, from ground level right through to the top floor. Elsewhere in the hotel, the high-spec gym is accessible 24/7, while the spa has an inviting hot tub and an enticing menu of REN treatments. Guests at The Athenaeum can also gain exclusive access to The View when booking direct – an enviable London spot from which to enjoy a complimentary drink and nibbles in the evening.

Nestled in a prime location, The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences is lauded for its luxurious and stylish atmosphere, with an elegant decor that guests frequently admire. Many travelers commend the spacious, clean, and well-furnished rooms, though a few note smaller room sizes and a lack of views. The hotel's exceptional cleanliness and convenient location near attractions and public transport are consistently praised. While the service receives high marks for staff friendliness and professionalism, some guests raise concerns about service charges. The amenities, including a spa, are particularly highlighted, yet opinions on value are mixed.

We had a wonderful getaway at the Athenaeum with our family of 4 (including two young children). We stayed at one of the residences. They arranged for really nice transportation between the airport and hotel both ways, which was comfortable, timely and professional. We took an overnight flight from Newark and were delighted to be able to check in early at noon upon our arrival, since we were all tired and in need of a change of clothes/wash up.

While the bathroom was very small, everything was clean and comfortable, and indeed stylish. The bunkbeds for the kids were a really nice touch. Room service was fast and good, so we took full advantage for breakfast and dinners on days when our kids were too tired to go back out for a restaurant dinner. The nice big dining table was really helpful to have. The kitchenette was awesome, and we made full use of the washer/dryer, which is a real godsend when you have small kids. One minor suggestion is for the hotel to stock paper towels in the kitchenette.

The location is good, especially for park strolls and it's a nice walk to the shopping on Regent Street. There is a close by tube station and several bus stops as well. It's also very close to some really cute little side streets in Mayfair full of shops and fancy homes to gawk at.

Real shoutout to Daniel, the lovely doorman, who doted on our little girls with treats and was always there to welcome us with a smile and fetch our stroller when we were headed out for the day.

One minor complaint is the added gratuity situation. While we would have no objection whatsoever to paying an automatic gratuity to hotel staff (they earned it!), it would have been good if this was told to us upon check in. Since we did not know, we left cash tips for the cleaning service and doormen. But not a huge deal, and the reception staff actually removed it from our bill. In hindsight I wish I had insisted they keep it on the bill, since all the staff we encountered were wonderful, not just the ones we tipped in cash.

We will definitely be back for our next London adventure.

My family and I visited for my 40th birthday and just had the most wonderful experience. My mum had told the hotel it was my birthday and they made everything so special. Everyone was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The rooms were so clean and there were so many thoughtful touches throughout. I particularly liked turndown service because they left water by the bed and some aromatherapy oil to help with sleep. The location is great so I was surprised by how quiet the rooms are, i couldn’t hear anything from outside. The bed was really comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and there was a great vegetarian selection. Everything about our stay was perfect. Beautiful hotel.

What a wonderful hotel, me and my girlfriend had a fabulous experience for our stay and we will certainly be going back. The room we stayed in was cosy and the hotel offers such a great touch by having drinks and snacks in the room which are complimentary (not something many hotels do offer). The breakfast was cooked very well and they offer either a breakfast buffet or off the breakfast menu with a good choice of breakfast options. Although we did not have time to use the facilities on this occasion, the hotel has a gym and spa which we heard from other guests was very good. The staff were excellent and extremely accommodating and helpful. Especially the doorman and porter, Daniel and Rahman deserve a special mention as they were absolutely brilliant. Daniel was always wanting to help us and give us advice on where to go in London and his recommendations were spot on. Nothing is too much trouble and the hotel looks extremely pretty from the outside too. There is a lovely area outside where you can sit and have a meal and drinks and the location is excellent, right near green Park and it is just a 5 minute walk to the tube station. The hotel also has reliable and trusted relationships with taxis etc so guests will not get ripped off by taxi drivers and the like. Overall an excellent experience at a fantastic hotel, we would highly recommend!

We had a great stay at The Athenaeum Hotel located opposite Green Park in the beautiful Mayfair district. It is located close to all amenities and a few minutes from the famous Buckingham Palace.

From the moment we arrived, we felt real professionalism and service. It started when we were at the front door with the doorman who was very friendly every time we met him and always with a smile. At the reception, the same is true, a staff who is there to take care of you in order to make your stay unforgettable.

We had a very beautiful room with superb decoration and a splendid bathroom entirely in marble. The very high quality bedding allowed us to rest as we should. Through the window, you can admire the Green Park, very pleasant in the morning to have this view when you wake up.

At breakfast which takes place in the room of The Restaurant, we ordered a traditional full English breakfast which was delicious. We looked forward to breakfast every morning, a real morning delight. The choice is really varied and where quality is a key word!

We also ate several evenings at the hotel restaurant. Once again, we felt a real quality of service. The staff is smiling and very friendly. We spoke with more than one person and had an even better time thanks to them. We tasted several dishes on different days, and each time it was a treat for the taste buds. There is real research in the preparation of dishes and a real desire to give the customer an unforgettable moment.

The wellness area is really well thought out and configured since it requires reservation. A perfect way to relax in complete privacy. The gym is also well equipped with high quality equipment.

It is possible to have access to The View Lounge on the top floor. The view is sublime, and being able to work in this space or just enjoy the present moment is really very enjoyable.

The hotel offers deals with the Bicester village which is absolutely a must-do during your stay in London, even more so if you stay at the Athenaeum Hotel. They offer a truly unique service. We took advantage of the VIP offer which is a package that includes a lot of things for your visit to the village. It was truly exceptional from start to finish, you feel a real tailor-made service just like at the Hotel.

We can say so many positive things about this Hotel. We are really looking forward to being able to go to London again and, above all, to stay in this fabulous establishment!!!

I have a disability and mentioned this to the team before my stay so I could get a room with a bath to ease my mobility issues. At a room at this price I expected the basic amenities to work, the sink was dripping underneath and the bath did not work (the stopper was broken and water kept draining out) and the team/management refused to get back to me about this, bearing in mind that this place is a ‘5 star’ hotel and costs a lot of money, I respected more to accommodate disabled guests. Room looked lovely but I went to relax and wasn’t happy with this service.

We were warmly greeted at the door and were helped with our suitcases down the stairs to the check in, the staff were incredibly friendly and we were seen very quickly. The room was perfect, soft bed and pillows, all necessities were provided and the soap and shampoo smelled divine. And a special thanks to Santiago for adorning our room with a delicious aray of macrons and fruit. The hotel is in such an accessible beautiful area, with Green Park just across the road, with Piccadily down one end and Oxford circus down the other.

Unfortunately, although all the staff we met very very pleasant, this stay was not among the best we’ve had.

Arriving just before 3pm, notified booking in time, we were told to give them our bags and to take a seat and they would take our bags to our room and check us in asap. After two further enquiries, and 55 minutes waiting, we made our third enquiry to a third different person, who simply gave us our room keys. No explanation, no apology. The room, having got there, carrying our own bags, was very nice, overlooking the park. We’d booked an early dinner at 6pm, because we were going to the theatre. Visiting the bar, for a pre-dinner drink, we had to wait 10 minutes for a menu, even though there were only 3 people drinking at that early hour. Then I was told, five minutes after ordering a cocktail, that they did not have the ingredients. After choosing another drink service took a further 5 minutes. Still only about 6 people in the bar by this time, but a lot of fuss over three people who were walk ins to the bar, not guests. Arriving for dinner, again only I table ahead of us, we had to wait over 30 mins for our meals. Despite having told the hotel, in a specific email reply to a message they sent us asking if we had any food allergies, my partners dinner included a not obvious drizzle of paprika or red chilli oil to the chicken, and flaked red chillies to the steamed, and unnecessarily al donte broccoli….why? Neither ingredient was mentioned on the menu, and these were just “cheffie” affectations. The waitress, and Manager, were very nice and apologised, and the dish was exchanged, by which time we missed the theatre start time. We were comped a half carafe of Chablis, but the evening was a right off at this point. Puddings, however, were very nice. The next morning we ordered two Full English Breakfasts. Both contained uncooked items, sausages, nearly raw, bacon very flabby, baked beans cold, bacon was not crispy as requested, and the toast had to go back because it had hardly touched the toaster. When the new toast arrived it was still nearly raw, with only the slightest tint of a grill. The waitress said there was a problem with the toaster. At that point we gave up.
Booking out was slow. There was seemingly an IT problem, preventing our bill being printed out at reception or being emailed to us. I had to go around the desk to look at the screen to approve the cost. Then we finally got away…..after about 20 minutes.

No doubt most of the hotels custom is from overseas guests, so repeat business is not a concern.

Dear 665glynj, I would like to extend my sincerest apologies for the disappointing experience you had during your recent stay at The Athenaeum Hotel. Your detailed feedback is both valued and necessary for us to address the issues you encountered and improve our services. First and foremost, I apologise for the extensive delay during your check-in. This is not the standard of service we aspire to provide. I assure you that we are actively reviewing our check-in procedures to prevent such delays in the future. I am sorry to hear about the issues you faced in the bar with the slow service and unavailability of certain ingredients for your cocktail. Our guests should always receive prompt and efficient service, and we will work to ensure that this is consistently delivered. Regarding your dinner experience, it is deeply regrettable that your partner's dish was not prepared according to your allergy specifications. This is a serious oversight on our part, and we will take steps to reinforce our allergy awareness and menu descriptions to avoid such situations. The quality of your breakfast was clearly subpar, and I apologise for the uncooked and unsatisfactory items served. This is not reflective of our usual standards, and we will investigate the toaster issue and work on improving the breakfast offerings. The slow check-out process due to an IT problem is also unacceptable, and we are actively working to resolve technical issues like these to ensure a more efficient and streamlined departure experience for our guests. Your comments are taken very seriously, and we deeply regret that your stay did not meet our usual high standards. We value all our guests, including our repeat visitors, and we are committed to making the necessary improvements to ensure a more enjoyable and seamless experience in the future. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention, and we hope to have the opportunity to regain your trust and serve you better on your next visit to The Athenaeum Hotel. Warm regards, Esmaa Sayed Guest Relations Manager

Lovely hotel, in a good location although just within the congestion zone area so adds a £25 extra charge per day, also no car park at the hotel and the one they recommended was £55 a day (found a nearby one for £60 for the weekend). Very friendly staff and nice decor but I’m afraid far too over priced. The rooms are tiny and are worth a third of the retail price (£600) - nicely decorated but nothing special about them and far too hot but too noisy if you open the window. Very comfy bed & black out blinds though. Very polite and friendly staff and attentive. Nice bar and was open til late. Breakfast eating area is small and was very busy and difficult to get a table for breakfast - breakfast took almost an hour to be served after ordering on each day (drinks took 30 mins after ordering!) Spa doesn’t have a swimming pool. They allowed early check in which was handy. Great location for walking into central London, Ubers incredibly expensive though (£43 for 1.2 mile journey). Took a £100 deposit and despite saying had released the hold on it, yet to receive refund 3 days later. All in all a great hotel, just not worth the cost I’m afraid

One of the worst experiences I have had at a hotel in a long time. Followed by complete antipathy to my experience.
I decided to stay here as I was attending the pink concert in Hyde park and it was on close walking distance and of a supposedly good quality. However, the experience was incredibly disappointing.

1) I was told there was valet parking and upon arrival no one was there so I parked in the car park I knew the hotel used, to be informed there was a £50 overnight parking charge.

2) I had requested a twin room and confirmed this, only to find the room was simply two single beds pushed together with two single duvets on top. Had they told me when I called to confirm I would have cancelled and chosen somewhere else!

3) the windows were filthy.

3.a) The coffee mug provided had a dark coffee ring stain inside it

4) there was thick dust on the tables and other surfaces
…..
5) the mini bar had deep stains in it.
….
6) I was informed the mini bar was gratis…. It was stocked with :1 x small pack crisps, 1 x 20g bar chocolate 2x mini bottles Diet Coke.
….
I would have preferred to have a fully stocked mini bar and pay for it ( if you’re spending 657 per night without breakfast It’s reasonable to assume the price of the mini bar would not be an issue … I’ve never experienced this before ).
….

7) the breakfast was awful: both orders were cold and both incorrect with mine making me feel nauseated.
….
8) the server snatched my coffee cup out of my hand with such force the man at the next table commented.

At every point I was respectful and balanced, I pointed out how friendly the reception staff were etc. How comfortable the beds were etc
….
Upon being asked if I had a good stay I simply said no, honestly o didn’t. They asked so I elaborated and again I was conscious to highlight the positives as well. I was told that I would have a reply by email but so far nothing….. clearly, they simply do not value the experiences of their customers.

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of September and the fact this review is only coming now is no reflection on the excellence of the hotel, it’s staff and facilities

The Hotel is perfectly positioned overlooking Green Park, close to all the amenities and the West End. We had a lovely room on the 3rd floor with balcony windows overlooking the park.

We were there for two events one in Camden and the other at the Royal Albert Hall and the hotel had asked about this ahead of time and looked after us so well. The facilities and welcome from Joanne Taylor-Stagg the GM and her team was excellent :from Liliya on Reception who efficiently checked us in, to Esmaa the guest relations manager who walked us up to our room and had done the most amazing mirror art on the two days to celebrate our events with us, to Nikhil the party chef whose themed creations were just amazing!!

The room was tastefully furnished and the superking sized bed was so comfortable and the minibar was stocked with a number of delicious treats for us to sample.

This was a special hotel for us to celebrate some special occasions! Highly recommend this for treating yourselves- you won’t be sorry!
