Situated in the heart of Bloomsbury in London's West End, The Academy comprises a collection of five Georgian townhouses combined into one charming luxury hotel. Following a multi-million-pound interior refurbishment by YTL Hotels, The Academy is now a proud member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection. The comprehensive refurbishment was overseen by renowned New York-based designer Alexandra Champalimaud, who has created an engaging blend of modern and vintage with a nod to the lives and loves of the Bloomsbury Set who lived and worked in the area in the early 20th Century. This rejuvenated 50 bedroom/suite boutique hotel in Bloomsbury juxtaposes timeless glamour and traditional features with a modern, comfortable city style to create a contemporary take on townhouse living.

Firstly the hotel staff could not be faulted Katarina went above and beyond every day of our stay to make it as comfort as possible. We were on the top floor, the room was immaculate and comfortable if a little clumsy with both of us being over 6ft tall and the ceiling not full height throughout…
The only real quip with the whole time spent was the time it took for our room to be ready on arrival. It being close to 5pm before we were shown upstairs, we were able to rush to our dinner reservations afterwards but would have appreciated time after a day of travel.
Overall we were very pleased with the hotel, it’s appearance and location and would most definitely stay again without hesitation.

I stayed here for one night with friends and it was a good price for the location it is in. The front door is very unassuming, and we had to be let in, it was like walking into someone’s house! Mine was the only room that wasn’t ready when we checked in - but the receptionist was very friendly - if a little unsure of procedures. I had one friend that had a real mix up of room, and actually got let into someone else’s room before he reached his own. There are a lot of stairs in this hotel so be aware if you are not able bodied.

My room was on the ground floor and quite spacious for a London hotel. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was nicely laid out with a big shower. There were a few black hairs in my shower which were pretty disgusting but other than that, the room was clean. The view was out over a street so I kept my curtains closed. It was quite quiet though which was a good thing.

The bar was shut when we got back, but the night manager let us have a drink as we sat in the area. It is not a big hotel and certainly isn’t somewhere to get dinner and a cocktail - but it did the trick.

I think the decor is lovely and it what sets this apart but other than that I am not sure I would return unless the price was right or I needed to be in the area.

I had high expectations for The Academy - it’s part of the YTL Hotels group and the Gainsborough in Bath is one of my favourite hotels in the world. I thought The Academy was a nice hotel but considering its higher price point, there’s others in London which we have stayed in which we will return to in the future.

Downstairs is beautiful and we were welcomed when we arrived. The problems started when we went upstairs. Our room was on the top floor on the other staircase and it was clear from our arrival that there’s been a lot of knocks and bumps - the staircase looked a bit unloved. Our room had a big water stain on the wall and lots of marks on the bathroom door and cupboard door, things which let down a luxury hotel room and make it look tatty. Neither reading light above the bed worked. However, everywhere was very clean and the bed was really comfy. I did have a good night’s sleep and luckily woke up before the loud banging started at 8am and the room next door were having a conversation. At times, we could hear him blowing his nose and sneezing but otherwise it was quiet.

Breakfast was included with our room rate so we had the continental breakfast of croissants, bread, cereals and fresh fruit. I enjoyed these but my wife found the croissants undercooked and quite doughy. Personally, I didn’t mind that. When we checked out, my wife was asked if she had a good stay. When she said it was ok, the person just said ‘Ok’ and didn’t ask her any more.

As I said, it was a nice hotel but we did leave disappointed (especially when this was my birthday present). None of these were necessarily things to bring to a manager’s attention at the time but we felt the standard we’ve seen from another YTL hotel, and as part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, was definitely not there.

I had a very nice three nights at The Academy. I encountered no major problems during my stay. The front desk staff was always very pleasant. The public rooms of the hotel - lobby area, library/sitting room off of the lobby and bar - were all nicely decorated and maintained. The breakfast room was a very pleasant place to have a meal. The breakfast itself was only cold items, but in that everything was fresh and nicely presented. I was in one of the rooms in the lower floor below ground level. I was worried at first, but it turned out to be no problem at all. The rooms have full-sized windows, so it lets in the maximum amount of light. It did have only a single bed, but I will say it was an incredibly comfortable bed. The room was furnished nicely and was quiet. The hotel is located close to both the Goodge St and Tottenham Court Rd stops on the underground, so reaching public transit is not a problem.

The Academy is located in Bloomsbury, on a quiet street but very close to several underground stations, a train station (Euston) and walking distance to some of the most popular tourist spots in London: Leicester Square, Soho, West End theatres, Oxford street, to name but a few. During my stay I could watch several musicals, concerts, theatre plays, without worrying about transportation, either walking or taking the tube. And I could walk back to the hotel without any concerns of safety. The hotel is also close to several restaurants, fast food places, pubs, supermarkets, drugstores, bookstores, cinemas, not to mention the world famous British Museum, so if you're looking for a cultural experience this is the perfect place for you.
The hotel itself is very cozy and comfortable, although the stairs might be a problem for people with difficulty to walk. I was alone and my room was perfect for one person, with plenty of space and a very nice bed. The staff will get out of their way to make your stay as nice as possible. On the first few days I was quite lost in the area, and the receptionist Jamal very kindly and patiently told me everything I needed to know to find my way, even printing directions for me.
So I definitely recommend this hotel.

If you've read enough of these reviews you'll get the gist of the problems with this property. The treacherous staircases (no lift) are out of the control of the management team, so don't take it out on them. You need to be aware that this is an historic property and be sure you want to walk up narrow stairs to the 3rd floor, if that is where they assign your room. One guest, stated that on one of the booking sites, they show the Academy as accessible. It is in NO WAY accessible. The second complaint I heard was the "Luxury Hotel" designation. I agree that it was more of a Bed & Breakfast vibe, than a Luxury Hotel. The rooms are small. The booking site described my 225 sq ft room as a "suite". So go by the specifications and not the descriptions. Our King Room rooms was very small. We stayed 9 nights, and by the time we left the walls were closing in on us. But on analysis, the room was clean and comfortable, with very nice linens and everything we needed was available, and everything was in good working order. The room was also very quiet. I don't think that was due to soundproofing or insulation though. I found the entire neighborhood to be very quiet. One bad guest could have changed that equation. The only real issue of not having anywhere in the bath to put a bag, I was able to correct, by moving the small side table into the bath. It may or may not work in all the rooms, since I only saw the layout of our room.

The staff transported our bags both on arrival and departure. The staff was available and sweet. No complaints about management.
So now the good stuff:
The public spaces, especially the garden were beautiful and cozy! They have space heaters on the umbrellas and blankets on the chairs in the garden. The bar area was small but elegant. The continental breakfast was excellent (especially by American standards). The location was perfect, near great restaurants on Store and Charlotte streets. Walking distance to the British Museum, Convent Garden, SOHO, West End Theaters and the Tottenham Court Station. Groceries and a Roots drug store were only a couple of blocks away on Tottenham. Several pubs are also in the area. I thought that the hotel, in all, offered good value. I paid less here than at the NY JFK Courtyard by Marriott.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the team here for making my stay here very comfortable and I truly felt welcome. I didn’t feel like leaving to London at first because of the long journey from my home. My stay here was for about a week in total. But the hotel team’s actions led by Matthew and his team had made me much at home and at ease. Thank you Matthew.

Also a special mention and thanks to front desk staff Rolly who I didn’t get to say bye to but he had made a special effort and obligation to send my breakfast to my room despite it being the weekend where breakfast only starts serving at 8am. I had to leave earlier for an appointment before breakfast starts and he has specially sent my breakfast to my room (see the photo). Amazing and great service indeed.

Thank you all for your service that went above and beyond the call of duty.

Apart from that, the hotel is very well located in the heart of London, with easy access to metro stations nearby. Shopping street is also very close by and it’s a great walking distance to Oxford street.

We recently stayed 4 nights at the Academy and were delighted by the luxurious service and touches, from a Nespresso machine in the room to several beautiful rooms to relax in such as The Library. The 'continent breakfast' was so much more than the name suggests, including your choice of sausage or bacon baps as well as a large buffet of fruits, pastries, yogurt, cereals, meats, and toasts. The service was impeccable. The location was terrific- quiet but close to so many amazing parts of town and connections. My only comments are relatively minor- we found our room overly fragranced and think this would be irritable to those with allergies. Our air conditioning unit was pretty noisy- we ran it during the day and turned it off at night. And finally, there was vacuuming every morning outside our room, once at 7:45am! Not sure why this is needed but I'd recommend holding off so folks can sleep off their London nights out! But this are nitpicks.

Dear Katie Thank you for the question. We have a number of bedrooms located on the ground floor of the Hotel, however access through the Front Door is up two steps from street level. We do not have any lifts within the Hotel and so access to our breakfast room (which is down a floor from Reception) would prove difficult. Of course, Room Service breakfast can be arranged.
