The perfect place to stay during your visit in London. Very nice neighborhood, a personal favourite, with nice cafes and restaurants. A very nice walk to Hyde Park is recommended or to Oxford Street for those shopping lovers, both are walking distance away. Rooms have been upgraded and there is always someone to help. The price is very low, for what you get, so be sure to check us out.

The Shakespeare Hotel garners mixed reviews, with guests appreciating its prime location near Paddington Station and the varied breakfast, yet many find the ambiance lacking due to basic decor and discomfort in furnishings. While the cleanliness of rooms is generally praised, the size and amenities fall short, with mentions of missing A/C and updates needed. Service is highlighted as friendly, contributing to the hotel's reputation for providing good value, but some guests have called for improved maintenance and staff responsiveness.

So, If your planning on staying here for a short trip, perfect. Any longer... stay somewhere a bit more expensive.

The shakespeare hotel was cheap which was just what we needed for our weekend trip to London. Although I'd agree with the overall 3 star rating given on here.

We were greeted... not unfriendly but not friendly either by the staff at the desk, and given a basement room. The toilet was separate to the room but private to us, we had our own key. The shower had good pressure and there was ample room but the location meant that going for the loo in the middle of the night was a bit of a chore.

The triple room (3 single beds) was large enough for us to live in and the beds were clean although a little springy. There was also a minifridge in our room. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided although we had to buy our own milk as the hotel only provided "whitener". The room was situation at basement level and at the front of the building. The entire room shook everytime train went underneath on the underground so if you imagined sleeping before 1am, think again. The noise on the street started about 7am which could be heard clearly through closed windows, which wasn't ideal considering the late night trains.

Breakfast was early from 7.30 till 9.30 and we had the continental breakfast. It was self served. The choice of food was... odd? Some ham slices, Swiss roll, toast, scrambled egg, beans, cereals, a selection of some fruit. For 2 mornings it was good enough, but if we had stayed any longer i think we would have found ourselves searching elsewhere for a heartier breakfast.
However the location of the hotel is perfect. So close to Paddington Station and with a cute little park outside.

Generally quiet in compassion to most of London and with nice food places nearby. This hotel is good to stay in if its just somewhere to rest your head for a shorter stay, but if you were planning on staying in the room a lot or required longer stays, I'd chose a bit more of an expensive hotel.

Although for the budget price, I got what I generally expected. No real complaints other than the tube shaking our room until 1am.

I would stay here again, but only on a 1 or 2 night basis :)

I spent a few days in London to do some sightseeing and exploring. This area was a good base as you can get around very well by walking as well as many different transport options. I love walking around places as you see and experience a lot more. Quick check in, room was on top floor, no lift option but not an issue for me. Bedroom and en-suite acceptable as this is in an old building with character which has been converted. Clean, radiator did not work in bedroom but thankfully it was not cold, small fridge in room which was convenient and shower was hot, take own toiletries.
Continental breakfast options limited but did set me up for the day, staff all friendly. WiFi was okay, managed to get through the few days. Sleep a little bit broken due to noisy neighbours my first night but did not spoil the experience.

Excellent location and the room was a very good value, so honestly wasn't expecting much. The room was actually a good size for London and the bed was very comfy, perhaps the best sleep on my trip. The room did need some repairs, with shower clogging at times and one wall showing water damage, but didn't bother me too much. Room came with a mini-fridge, which was a pleasant surprise. Breakfast was pretty basic, with you needing to pay extra for an English breakfast, but the waffles, cheese, cold cuts, and toast will fill you up. My biggest issue was that the tap water in my room wasn't safe to drink and I was told I would need to buy water to deal with that, which doesn't sit right with me. Was able to go down and get water from the breakfast area, though that might not have been allowed. Still, hotels should provide safe drinking water without an extra fee.

We have booked the hotel because of the location and the PADDINGTON underground station nearby. The location of the hotel is the positive of it and there it ends.

The rooms you’ll get are small hardly accommodate big luggage, not much space in the room to pack your stuff in. Bathroom is literally built into the room what cause the water is all around when you shower. In the shower is missing proper curtain which will protect the room from being wet. From this it may happen in the rooms below can leak water in. The fridge in the room makes a lot of noise which was not comfortable for sleeping. Our room window was facing a small backyard of the hotel, where was Air Condition unit installed and was very noisy. The noise from air-condition unit outside was hearable in the room almost all night. But nothing compares the noise from the UNDERGROUND METRO. The hotel is standing literally on underground trucks and when a train is passing by you hear it like it is in the room. Almost whole room and furniture is shaking, and the noise is unbearable in the night. I can’t imagine somebody will be sleeping there with a small child. Maybe rooms on top of the hotel don’t hear the noise from underground but rooms on the ground level for sure will.

We also had the breakfast which had a small choice of food what’s expected. The breakfast was average, tea terrible, coffee not drinkable. But you can at least get some food to start the day until you eat something else. Food is filled randomly so it’s hit or miss.

I personally don’t recommend the hotel at any cost and will not visit again.

I stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in a single economy room. I chose it because of location and price. I booked pretty far in advance and I must’ve got Covid pricing because I paid a little over $600 CAD, including English breakfast. So that was great, as was the location, you can get practically anywhere you would want to go from Paddington station, in many cases direct.

The room was comically small. I’m not large, but when I sat on the toilet I was smashed against the wall on one side, the sink on the other and my feet extended into the “bedroom”. I had to step out of the bathroom to have enough room to dry after a shower. The bed was very narrow, but comfortable and the sheets were good. There was this weird double door situation and to exit the room I had to hold the first door with my foot, open the second door, then exit letting the first door slam behind me, otherwise I would have got stuck between the two doors. That didn’t seem very safe if a fire were to occur.

The room was clean and having a small fridge was a very nice feature. The room was pretty shabby though and some things were in disrepair. There was a big wad of toilet paper stuck between the wall and some pipes in one corner (gross!!), the toilet seat was falling off, and the sink drain got stuck so the sink wouldn’t drain. The hotel advertises on their website that toiletries are included, but there were none in my room, just a liquid soap dispenser.

The breakfast wasn’t fancy, but it had a fairly good selection of food that got the job done. I did try the English breakfast one morning but it wasn’t to my taste. The staff seemed friendly in the limited interactions I had with them.

The fact that the water in the room is not potable seems extra weird, I had thought London was a city in a first world country with a safe water supply. Whatever the reason, the hotel should supply drinking water at no charge, it’s not like it’s a luxury item.

Would I stay here again? Maybe, I loved the location. It would depend on the price, and what else was available in this area. Hopefully the management can address some of the issues that are bringing this place down, because I do believe they have a diamond in the rough here.

What a great location! This hotel is situated in the middle of a row of hotels directly across the street from a lovely sitting park, Norfolk Square.

There are so many restraints, pubs, coffee shops, currency exchanges and tourist shops in the immediate area. This hotel is also a block from Paddington Station. For those staying here who purchases the London Pass, the hop on hop off bus stop is located at the beginning of the street.

Each and every staff member we met was so friendly and helpful. They knew our names and asked about our daily adventures.

Rooms: There is no air conditioning & the balconies are not safe to stand on. The mattresses are okay but I think they need upgrading. The bedding was soft, comfortable and clean.

Room 141:
Super small room with 2 twin beds, small bathroom shower stall. If you are a larger person, you will have a difficult time entering the corner shower. There is a mini-fridge available in the room.
Beautiful view of park

Room 131:

Room 122:

Dining Room: open until 9:30am for breakfast
Choice of full English breakfast or small continental breakfast.
Full English breakfast
water, coffee, tea, juice
2 eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, beans

Other breakfast, slices of cheese, hard boiled eggs, croissants, sometimes waffles, canned fruit, store bought pastries, cereal.

You may not bring any food/flatware to your room from the dining room.

I felt safe at all times, the location was great (only two blocks away from Paddington Station with trains, metro and bus stops), the bed was comfortable and I got the room cleaned, the bed made and the towels replaced every day and the staff was very helpful and friendly. I got a room in the 2nd floor (no lift) and they were kind enough to help me with my luggage. The toilet, though a bit uncomfortable, was OK. With that said, the place could do with a little update (the blankets for instance). All in all it was the right choice for my travel with a limited budget.

Oh where do I begin? First the pros.
Pros: The hotel sits on a little street just 1 block from Paddington tube station and across from a beautiful little park. The Neighborhood is full of restaurants and souvenir shopping And the proximity of the paddington's tube station makes getting around london very easy. There is a Four star Hilton hotel outfront of the paddington tube Station, which could be important if you choose to book a room at the shakespeare Hotel. Hotel is clean and offers breakfast.
Cons: Are you ready? Hold on this could get rough.
#1 no a/c room was sweltering day & night. I stayed 2 nights out of 5.
#2 no lift
#3 they limit you to 2 rather small towels and when I asked for extra towels, the front desk attendant question me about why I needed more towels then reluctantly gave me two additional.
#4 The room is so small the 2 suitcases we had take up all the floor space. We had to step over them to maneuver around the room.
#5 The two twin beds are narrower than normal twin beds which Is very uncomfortable.
#6 There is no water temperature control, just hot water. You can get cold water, but the minute you turn on the hot water to adjust the temperature It's just hot water.
#7. The shower door is designed to open about 12" and was nearly impossible to get in and out.
#8 There are no amenities, like soap, but you can go to Boots and buy what you need in the Paddington station.
Here is how I handled the situation; I walked the one block over to the Hilton 4 star and booked a room for the rest of my stay in London. It was well worth the price at any cost. I do not recommend this hotel unless you are young (I'm 60 and healthy), and on a budget. Just book the Hilton you won't regret it. The Hilton is about $100 more per night for a standard room, 2 beds and they have towels and soap.

Dear Lisa, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad you enjoyed our excellent location, and were able to explore the area. We are located in a restored Victorian era home, and the historic features of the building prevents us from installing a lift. We do not advertise having a lift or AC, and neither are common for many economy hotels in London. We are sorry you were not satisfied with your stay. We chose this hotel because of the number of positive reviews, the price and the location and I'm so glad we did.
On arrival staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our room was quite small, but what we expected for London. However, it was pleasantly decorated, it had tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge, good quality towels, a good shower and an electric blind on the skylight. It was very clean and the bed was comfortable.
The hotel is located just opposite Paddington Station and the new Elizabeth like offers easy access to virtually anywhere you wish to get to by tube.
Breakfast was so much better than I had expected. There was an extensive range of teas and coffee, fresh fruits, yoghurt, cereal, freshly made waffles and toast, meats and cheeses, scrambled eggs and beans, and for just £3 extra you could have full English which consisted of two fried eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast! We didn't bother eating anything else until about 5.30! Again, staff in the dining room were extremely pleasant and helpful.
When we go back to London we will definitely be booking into The Shakespeare again!

Was here for 7 nights during August.
Everything was great. Great location near Hyde park. 3 room bedroom with safe, little fridge and everything. Room also had balcony.
Staff was helpful when needed. Had a breakfast. Not like swedish table like otherwise but now because of corona it was different. Every morning we got small package with sandwich, juice, egg and biscuits.
Public transportation is near - 2min walk (Paddington station- Underground and buses), restaurants (Mcd, Burger King, KFC, Subway..) and small shops and pubs.
Only flaw is that it hasnt got air conditioner but that is because no summer was as hot as this one so they didnt need it.
When I ll come to London I ll be back and would highy recommend.
