Since 1962, La Gaffe has been opening its doors to locals and overseas visitors alike. We opened originally as a restaurant but, over the years, we have expanded to include both our guest accommodation and wine bar. We offer comfortable and competitively-priced rooms, as well as delicious Italian cuisine. Set in the heart of Hampstead Village, one of London’s most charming areas, both our award-winning hotel and restaurant are family-run. We are warm and hospitable with our emphasis on informality.

La Gaffe was the perfect choice for my partner and I visiting London. The room we stayed in which I highly recommend was the deluxe double room with jacuzzi. It was perfectly well equppied (with a TV, hair dryer and so on), clean and spacious. The mattress was comfortable and the jacuzzi was perfect for relaxation after a rainy day in London! The hotel is a cluster of historic cottages appropriated into guest accomodation. The architecture is cosy, has a historic, warm character and is nicely decorated with mostly Italian themes (since the owners are Italian). The ground floor space is perfect for relaxing and having coffee. Lorenzo and his team are very friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to make sure you are happy. For me, personally, the location couldn't be better. You are in quiet, idyllic Hampstead village. You have the sense that you are in a village and yet you are in the heart of London. The tube is just a few minutes walk away, you jump on the northern line and you are in the west end in 20 minutes. The area is perfect for walks, restaurants and pub visits - the Holly Bush being my favourite. The value was excellent too! Thank you La Gaffe, we will be sure to visit again :)

Truly wonderful experience at La Gaffe. What can I say that hasn't already been shared in these reviews? The accomodations are exceptional - clean and comfortable. I had a bathtub and shower in my room, so I was able to take a hot bath at the end of the day. The complimentary breakfast was very good. They have an espresso machine, so they can make whatever kind of coffee drink you need. And of course tea. I don't know when the restaurant will be open, but I would love to try the food. The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. La Gaffe is a bit more like a BnB, than a hotel -- it's a unique place and I'm so glad I chose to stay here. I will definitely be back.

Lovely, friendly people. Room was basic, but good for the price and location, which is excellent. It’s in a residential area, away from the central London crowds. But it’s a short walk to the Underground, and you can be on the middle of everything in 15-20 minutes. It’s more of a charming B & B than a hotel - breakfast is included. Thank you!! to Lorenzo who was very responsive after booking dor com got hacked. Highly recommend. — Annette

This was our second stay at La Gaffe, and we were very happy we came back. As long as you travel light, don't mind climbing stairs, and are planning to get around on public transport, this is an awesome hotel for the price. Lorenzo was exceptionally helpful and accommodating throughout our weeklong stay. Best of all, our room was ready on arrival even though we arrived straight from an overnight flight from the U.S., and we were even offered breakfast. La Gaffe is in a perfect London location: five minutes' walk to Hampstead Heath in one direction and less than that to the tube. Hampstead village is charming and fun to explore, and central London is easily accessible. Our room was very compact, but drawer and closet space were adequate, and we had space for everything. Large suitcases would not have fit in the room. The expanded continental breakfast was tasty, and the cafe latte was great.

I can't remember how many times I have stayed here over 20 years. 10? 15? 20? Every time, it is like returning to a family. Eccentric, yes, but an experience. Always a good wine selection. Nice contenental breakfast. Great cappuccino. Clean, well-maintained, and affordable. Close to tube and many great restaurants and pubs.

I do not recommend this place more like a hostel or bedsit than a hotel. Normally stay at premiere inn and thought we would try somewhere different. The room had dirty walls and then bed was squeaky. It reminded me of my student accommodation 25 years ago. No sound proofing I could hear neighbours arguing until 1 am. Staff were polite however fire alarm went off multiple times in the night. When I tried to exit the door was internally locked and no one greeted us outside. Worse than this was that a team member from the annex next door was clearly visible inside the property on the phone and distracted while his guests stood for 20 minutes on the pavement outside…in the end I returned back into the building and retrieved the contact telephone number for emergency contacts…as we did not know how long we may be stood outside for…I rang the number and the same man I could see wandering around inside answered and eventually came out…I was very annoyed that he did not approach us in all the time we stood there and left us to fend for ourselves until shamed into helping us. A truly awful experience and I would never stay there again the breakfast offer was boiled eggs bread rolls and cereal and the restaurant error had a strange odour.

Response from La Gaffe, Owner at La Gaffe
Responded 26 Sept 2023
Very sorry for the inconvenience to you and to all our guests with the fire alarm going off in the night. We have been here 61 years and I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times this has happened. I apologise for the disturbance. Regarding your criticisms, I am a little disappointed. Firstly, we are not a hotel. We make this very clear and you receive two notifications before you even get here explaining that we are a bed and breakfast in old buildings from the 1850s. I appreciate what we offer is not for everyone, but we have plenty of guests that really like what we do. Our rooms are simple, comfortable and clean. And this is the feedback we receive from the vast majority of our guests. We try our best to help potential guests make an informed decision when considering their booking options. I am sorry we didn't help you. However, I am most disappointed in your comments regarding our member of staff. He did a great job under stressful circumstances. He had to assess if there was any danger following the alarm going off. And once it was clear that there was no fire or chance of a fire, and that all or guests could return safely to their rooms, he tried to reset the fire alarm. The panel would not reset, and he had to call an emergency engineer for assistance. They did not answer, so he was calling all our emergency contact numbers for help. Finally he was able to get through and resolve the issue. Please excuse him for being distracted while he tried his best to sort out the problem as quickly as he could, therefore ensuring the safe return to the buildings of all our guests.

Excellent location. Walking distance to Hampstead underground station. easy walk to Hampstead Heath, worth a stroll through. Lovely suburban part of London. Lots of shops and restaurants/cafes. La Gaffe had great breakfast and very friendly owner and staff. Small number of people stating there, which made experience more friendly. Rooms very clean with ensuite however quite small in size but all we needed as not in room except to sleep. No parking available.

Great location just a 3 minute walk from Hampstead Northern Line tube station and all the shops, pubs and restaurants in the area. Be aware that the official website and both my booking confirmations all said check out is 11am this is incorrect a card in the room said 10am and staff at the guest house confirmed it was in fact a 10am check out. Also, it says the room would be serviced every day and it wasn’t.

Response from La Gaffe, Owner at La Gaffe
Responded 7 Sept 2023
Thank you for your comments. Sorry for any inconvenience. We try to make our guests aware of the change to check-out time so there are no surprises on the day of check-out, which I think we do well. And it does not seem to be an issue for the vast majority of our guests as 10 a.m. is standard in quite a few establishments. Rooms are serviced every day and the only reason they would not be is if we see the "do not disturb" sign on the outside door handle. We are here to help, any issues please tell us and we will always try our best to help.

This was our second stay at La Gaffe; the first was in November, 2019, and we were planning to return in the spring, 2020, when Covid shut everything down. Returning in May, 2023, we found the hotel as congenial and inviting as before--the owner, Lorenzo, and the staff actually remembered us after three and a half years! Located on a hill in Hampstead, twenty minutes by tube from central London, it's great as a base to explore the city, and also to relax in nearby Hampstead Heath. Lots of local restaurants and pubs, shopping, a friendly and active community. We intend to return, hopefully as soon as the fall.

we had the deluxe room and it was a spacious and comfortable room with a nice view on the square behind the B&B. We slept with open window and there was absolutely no noise, perfect. Lorenzo, the owner, is a wonderful man and so nice to talk to. It is not a five star accommodation but it is definitely worth the price. A lot of stairs to go to your room though.
