The California is a charming, modern and quirky bed and breakfast, less than a minute's walk away from King's Cross and St. Pancras stations. Our 60 stylishly refurbished rooms, each one cosy and comfortable, are spread over four Georgian townhouses, and we've retained as much of the original architecture as possible; our windows, corridors and staircases are all original. This means that we don't have a lift, but we do keep our reception open 24 hours a day. We have high speed WiFi is throughout the hotel and have a fantastic little bar, lounge and private terrace for our guests to enjoy. We serve a great breakfast. Welcome to The California London. Visit anytime, explore every time.

The California hotel garners praise for its friendly staff and prime location near Kings Cross and St Pancras, making it a convenient choice for guests looking to explore the city. However, some visitors have expressed concerns about the noise levels from construction and street activity. While the rooms are generally clean and comfortable, their size and amenities vary, with occasional remarks about poor air conditioning and water pressure. Despite mixed reviews on value, the hotel's cleanliness and unique atmosphere are often highlighted as notable positives.

Really enjoyed our stay! Personnel is very welcoming and ready to go extra mile for the comfort of their guests. On the day of departure guests can leave all their luggage in the reception in secure room. Rooms were cleaned every day, even on Christmas Day! You can enjoy rather cheap breakfast in the hotel or there is a variety of places to eat within 1-3 mins walk. Will return here again!

Had a 3 night stay here in a twin room. Room exactly like photos in the website.
Cute room, double glazed window which is great to block out sound but small rooms stiff so need windows open when there and also no fan in bathroom.
Bathroom good size.
Only one towel per guest and very small towels so constantly needing extra each day room was cleaned (clean room and towels we didn’t bother with linen but they made the beds daily which is lovely).
Not all rooms have a safe so we moved so we could have a safe.
Location is fabulous!!! A minutes walk to Kings Cross Station and St Pancras station.
We walked everywhere from here.
Gorgeous little bar/cafe on the ground floor.
No life only stairs but staff very helpful with your luggage.
Will definitely be staying there when next in London.

Nice stay, very central hotel, 2 minutes from King cross st pancras train station. You can walk within 25 minutes to British museum, covent garden, picadilly, Soho, Trafalgar square, etc. As far as the room is concerned they pick it up and clean it every day, replenish sachets of coffee, milk and tea and have a water heater with which you can perfectly breakfast in the room. Very comfortable beds.

It is a few meters from Kings Cross station. The staff is always very friendly and the room for 1 person is very clean, bright, airy and very comfortable. The soundproofing was very good, there was no noise from traffic or other rooms. They have a machine to refill the bottle with filtered water, you can do late check-out with prior notice and leave your suitcases stored for free.
Highly recommended and good value for money.

Great place great people great moment. We enjoy staying at the Hôtel California near St Pancras Station. An improvement could be made on the water pressure on the shower and we do not find a safe lock on the room. Little noise from the building under construction in the morning, hope it will end soon. Thanks Alina and the whole team!

Our stay at this hotel has been nothing short of a nightmare. Despite the small size of our room, the cleaning has been utterly neglected. The bed sheets were dirty, and shockingly, my spouse and I experienced burns on our skin from rubbing against them. This is simply unacceptable—sheets need to be replaced immediately with soft, high-quality ones, as health is the top priority. To make matters worse, the reception staff are incredibly impolite. It feels as though they are being forced to work here. I greet them with a ‘good morning’ or ‘good night,’ and they don’t even acknowledge us, let alone smile. We tried sitting in the lobby, but their cold, judgmental stares made us so uncomfortable that we had to leave. If the staff dislike their job so much, they should quit—there are plenty of people who can be hired to replace them. A bit of politeness and professionalism wouldn’t cost a thing!

On top of the poor service, the amenities are shockingly bad. The sound insulation is non-existent, making it impossible to rest properly. The stairs are narrow and difficult to navigate, and there is no proper elevator. The lobby is unwelcoming, with nowhere decent to sit. The windows are filthy, and the bed is so small that even one person struggles to fit comfortably—let alone two people! Our feet were hanging off the edge, which was both uncomfortable and frustrating. This experience has significantly ruined our time in London. For the price we paid, the level of service and accommodation is absolutely disgraceful.

To add insult to injury, the entrance door leaks water 24/7, right onto your head or your coffee as you try to enter or exit! Water drips constantly from some lousy plant pot, and not one staff member has taken the initiative to fix it. When I asked about it, I got a rude, dismissive answer that was worse than being yelled at. The final straw was when we requested room cleaning. We left in the morning and returned in the evening, only to find that all our towels had been taken, nothing had been cleaned, and to top it all off, they hung a ‘please don’t disturb’ sign on our door!

This hotel is a disaster in every sense, and I strongly advise against staying here. There are far better places in London to spend your money—this is not one of them.

Dear 42_ratb, Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay. We sincerely apologise for the experience you described, as it does not reflect the hotels standards. The California’s only positives are location (close to King’s Cross) and appearance (vaguely modern furnishings). Otherwise, my stay here was horrible but many of these things can be fixed by The California relatively simply. The most annoying problem was the wifi—this is the worst wifi I have ever experienced, I would rather it just not be offered than be logged out every 30 minutes on the dot. Room was fine overall but very small (couldn’t fully open my carry-on luggage) and some light staining on white bedding. Much more concerning, a male housekeeper unlocked our door unannounced which made me feel unsafe the rest of the time staying here. We were interrupted several more times after this by housekeeping, including multiple times in a day, which could be fixed with a do not disturb sign or similar. Regardless, it’s incredibly inappropriate to enter an occupied room without permission. Staff members were broadly rude, especially the women at the front desk. Upon checking out, we were charged for breakfast which was advertised as included in our booking. We wouldn’t really care, but it was truthfully the worst breakfast imaginable. I had a pastry because there were no vegetarian options and my partner had scrambled eggs and bacon—my partner who will eat anything said they were the worst eggs he has ever had in his life. The food was completely unlabeled and utensils were shared across items which is a massive allergy risk and makes eating with dietary restrictions impossible here. Labeling and (even minimal) separation of items/utensils would make a big difference in my view, but partner says it’s best just to not eat the food because it was that disgusting. Would recommend staying anywhere else in London, please don’t bother with The California.

We regret that on this occasion we were unable to fully satisfy your expectations. The matter you raised have been escalated to our management team for them to address in our constant endeavour to improve and enhance the service offered to our valued guests. The first approach was already unprofessional: our reservation didn't appear and the payment for breakfast didn't appear. Luckily I had all the receipts! A first surprise: for breakfast you are given a voucher and must be consumed in an Italian restaurant (if I had wanted to eat Italian I would have stayed in Italy and not gone to London). The accommodation is shocking: underground, a blind room, reachable by a very narrow ladder. Very claustrophobic! The floors and cabinets in the room were sticky but the disconcerting thing was the toilets: not even at the train station... Luckily we stayed in the room for the bare minimum to rest a few hours but honestly in the evening after so much walking, the idea of returning there Our hearts ached inside. Saturday morning surprise: breakfast postponed for an hour without anyone having warned us. By now we had booked an excursion and so we lost the breakfast paid for £20 each, which was not refunded.

Hotel
Staff welcoming & friendly
Hotel very clean
A row of terraced houses, very central ideal for King’s Cross & Euston railway stations.
Welcoming front spotlessly clean & nice reception area bar & a rear outside terrace.
The hotel is a bit of a rabbits warren to your room, we had booked a small double room cost £127:80 room only.
Our room was in the basement towards the rear of the hotel, window was a skylight that other rooms above could see into.
Bathroom was small, not sure why they bothered to put a tiny bath in there with overhead shower. Room was that small it required the bathroom door to open outwards into the small bedroom.
Only 1 towel each, no hand towel, double bed was comfortable one side gather wall needed to climb over husband for the bathroom in the evening, which was difficult in the dark & that the ceiling slops very low & the end of the bed is the wall with tv fitted.
I would stay again, due to the central location , staff & cleanness of the property but I wouldn’t stay in that room type again.
I was worried about if there was a fire how we would escape, due to the up down twist & turns of very narrow corridors & stairways to get to our room.
Something I always check on arriving at a hotel is fire escape route.
It was alarming to see 3 fire doors left open with a door wedge ( meant to be closed at all times to parent fire spreading)

You'll hardly hear anything from the main road. The hotel's walls and doors are quite thin, though. You're more likely to hear your neighbors than the road.
