City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

Any good restaurants or pub recommendations within walking distance? Did this area seem safe at night?
I Iived in London for almost ten years and I am a regular visitor. The Apex is located in one of the safest areas of London. It is quiet at the weekend though as it is predominantly a business district (i.e. hardly anyone lives in the immediate vicinity. It is very safe, but the usual precautions apply. There are loads of good pubs and restaurants in walking distance. Haz (Turkish), Milano (Pizza), Sanam Tandoori (Indian) and Bodean's BBQ (American) are all great and within 3 minutes walk. Immediately on the other side of Tower Bridge, to the left, is Butler's Wharf where there are many restaurants including a few upmarket places. 6'13" bloke nailed it with his pub recommendations. They are all just a few steps away. I would add The Hung Drawn and Quartered, which is also nearby.
