38 St Giles is a grand house with a long and interesting history. It was built in 1700 for the Gurney family and became home to the former Lord Mayor of Norwich. Its neatly tucked-away entrance just off St Giles Street creates an intimacy and privacy that is unrivalled. We are the most centrally located boutique accommodation in Norwich, a stone's throw from the largest outdoor covered marketplace in the UK and adjacent to 'the lanes' - one of the oldest parts of this fine city and an area of national repute boasting well over 200 independent retailers of fashion, food and just about anything else that you might wish to buy. Inside the main entrance we have a grand staircase from which most of the bedrooms are accessed. From our wonderful double rooms to our two large suites you will be surrounded in comfort and a sense of history. We have chosen an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary pieces of furniture & artefacts, sumptuous throws, cushions and rugs. Our bathrooms feature oversized walk-in showers and rain shower heads, several rooms also have baths. White, fluffy towels and a range of quality toiletries help ensure that your morning ablutions are a positive experience! In selecting our bedding we have chosen simply embroidered 400 thread count white Egyptian cotton (not easy to iron but wonderful next to the skin) with goose down and feather pillows and duvets. Homemade cakes are served on arrival with a choice of teas or our specially blended and locally roasted coffee. We bake our own bread, make our own preserves and source all of our ingredients from the best local suppliers. No corners are cut in attempting to provide you with a relaxing, comfortable and memorable stay. We are happy to cater for small wedding parties, birthdays, anniversaries and other group bookings. We can even create a special meal with fine wines and champagne on arrival for that extra special treat.

An out-of-the ordinary guest house in a quaint old building - complete with creaky floorboards so beware of early-morning or late-night noises! An elegant and comfortable room, nicely decorated with antiques. I think that the kettle should have been placed upon the table with the coffee machine however; when we first arrived I couldn't find it, and made a right old mess fiddling about with tea bags, soaking the floor with water in the process! Fortunately we soon found the kettle....and chocolate brownie cake was provided as a welcome! The manager, Daima, is charming and friendly. Breakfasts are very tasty, with savoury offerings of spiced avocado with eggs on sourdough, eggs Benedict or eggs Royale (with smoked salmon). The guest house is mostly not staffed (you keep your key with you and use an entry code for the front door) so this needs to be taken into consideration.

Thank you so much for your review and delighted that, overall, you gave us 5* A couple of points that I hope will convey our determination to listen and improve : We have ordered larger bespoke trays to accommodate the coffee machine, kettle and various sachets, sugar etc. There will be no more searching for the kettle! In terms of check in, we are introducing a personalised check in that extends to 6pm (later when I am working here!). Most guests check in well before this time and so I am hopeful this will improve guest experience. Later arrivals will generally be self check-in but there is a 24 hour manned contact number to ensure any inconvenience is minimised. Please do return next time you are in Norwich and be sure to ask for me. Thank you again.

This is a beautiful house , well appointed rooms , friendly staff and delicious breakfast. Every detail thought out - home made brownies to welcome you , still and sparkling water in the room - also a brilliant location right in the centre of Norwich but still pretty quiet

We found the receptionists rude and unhelpful and the hotel overpriced. That’s if you can find one to help as the reception is hardly manned. The hotel wants full payment in advance and then want about a months notice to cancel. I would not stay there. There are better hotels in the vicinity. Do not waste your money on this on.

I can confirm that we have never received a booking from you, and following a thorough search of our records for July and August, can only conclude you didn’t book / stay at 38 St Giles. Some other points, just for clarity; * we don’t employ receptionists * our cancellation policy is 72hrs and not one month

Well-appointed, comfortable and clean. They’ve thought of little touches that bring the inn to the next level. For example, they leave house-baked cake and fresh milk for you when you check-in. The breakfast is made from scratch, delicious and served by friendly servers. A beautiful place for a wedding party, couple’s get-away, or family.

Staff should be aware that comments made in the kitchen can be heard by guests in the hall. I was approached at the breakfast table to be told that my payment hadn't gone through - fair enough. I returned to my room to get my payment card and waited in the hall to pay. The waitress acknowledged my existence and went into the kitchen. "That customer is ready to pay now" "Well they're just going to have to wait" was the response Ok, so why come in and tell me at the breakfast table, within earshot of other customers, that I need to pay. Other people might have taken real offence at this. The room was very nice, bed was comfy. The best thing about this hotel is the great central location. Perfect for our needs. Breakfast was also very good - especially the granola starter - delicious! No kettle in the room, which was odd considering there were teabags. No hairdryer either, but we supposed that perhaps these would have been provided if we'd asked ... not that I saw anyone around to ask. Information folder in the room could do with an update

Dear Bee, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for the positive comments about the comfort of your room, location and breakfast. However, please accept my apologies for a member of staff approaching you in the circumstances described, whilst you were having breakfast. Problems with processing payments are fairly common and there is a policy in place in terms of how we communicate with customers. We have spoken with the staff in order to underline the importance of this. As regards the comment you overheard, I understand that the words the staff member recalls saying differ slightly and if this is the case I think the connotation may not be quite as suggested. Nevertheless, even when staff are busy, all conversations should be conducted discreetly. As regards the hairdryer, there is definitely one in every room although I think we will add the exact location to our concierge pack. There is also an ‘out of hours’ number to call, where we’d be happy to help if you can’t locate something. The hot water comes from the coffee machine, rather than have a separate kettle. I am in the process of undertaking a thorough review of the check-in process to ensure that all questions as regards where everything is and how everything works are anticipated as comprehensively as possible. Finally, please do drop me a line on bookings@38stgiles.co.uk so that I can follow up with you directly.

Stunning room, amazing breakfast - best eggs royale I have ever had - and really lovely staff. I've stayed in high end places before and been made to feel a bit unwelcome by slightly sniffy proprietors who seem to think you're fortunate to stay with them - not like that here, they seem like they genuinely want you to be happy and can't do enough. So central that we were in the town centre in a couple of mins on foot so didn't need to worry about taxis for shopping or eating out. Thoroughly recommend.

A mixed bag, at best. The rooms and interiors are great and it’s obvious a lot of time has been spent on making the place look great. I didn’t realised when booking there are two separate properties, all be it conjoined. What that meant was instead of breakfast in the breakfast room we had a small box with two pastries, two glasses of granola, an apple, a banana and a mini bottle or orange juice. Again all be it for each person, because we weren’t aware of this our dietary requirements weren’t given or asked for so I couldn’t eat one half and my partner the other, plus no tea or coffee, it also just wasn’t very nice. On leaving you have to pass the Breakfast Room and it really felt what we had was a bit second rate. For £160 a night it was shockingly bad. The parking instructions were sent by text message the night before, a little confusing maybe a map would have helped, again the kicker was we enquired at first at the wrong hotel and found out that they charge £10 in more or less the same place (if not better) and 38 St Giles charge £18, there’s no reason for being nearly double and it just added another layer or poor value. We felt we’d over paid and got really bad value for money. Needless to say we wouldn’t recommend 38 St Giles to anyone.

So sorry to read that you were disappointed. I understand you stayed in the townhouse, next door to the main B&B and that you had a continental breakfast, which is what we offer townhouse guests if the main breakfast room is full. You should have been made aware of this. We are currently reviewing our pre-arrival check in comms although it may be useful to advise that our 3 private car parking spaces are particularly wide (there's sufficient room for 4 cars) but we choose to give guests who often bring with them quite expensive cars, some peace of mind when manoeuvring in and out of spaces. I hope that you will try us again so that we can improve on this experience. If so please contact me direct and I will ensure you enjoy a full breakfast and room upgrade.

The whole team at St Giles are brilliant. Always helpful and super accommodating. I am a regular customer and thats because the rooms are great, always clean, comfortable and always welcoming. The breakfast is made to order and probably the best in Norwich I’ve ever had (stayed in other places nearby previously). They also have parking (need to pre-book for an additional charge) which is safe and secure. The location of this boutique hotel is perfect. 👏🏽 Well done!

I stayed at 38 St Giles in Norwich, Norfolk, for one night and it was a delightful experience. While the exterior may appear understated, stepping inside revealed a warm and mature decor. I spent the day in 38b, the townhouse part of the boutique B&B. It combined modern elements with a sense of history, creating a unique and memorable atmosphere. The preservation of its heritage added an extra layer of charm, making me feel like I was part of something special. I loved the room I stayed in too. A blend of homeliness and a special "away from home" feel. Every detail was carefully thought out. The staff at 38 St Giles were exceptional. The full English breakfast was a culinary masterpiece. It was prepared with skill and precision, and the flavors were simply outstanding all ingredients sourced locally. I highly recommend 38 St Giles. Once again, thank you to the staff at 38 St Giles for making my stay unforgettable. I look forward to returning in the future.
