We came back again following a wonderful stay last July for our wedding anniversary but this time for my birthday. I was really pleased the Fizz and afternoon tea was allowed on a Friday this makes it more accessible to those wanting a child free night away. We stayed in Room 1 which was really lovely. I probably wouldn't have booked that room if I'd known it was facing the court yard as people did as people do peer in the room as they walk past so we had the shutters and blinds closed all the time which was abit of a shame. The first floor rooms will be my preference next time.

Afternoon tea was much better this time than last and the only reason I have taken a star off was because breakfast was not good. We ordered for room delivery and it was stone cold which when you have a poached egg really isn't nice. We will come back no doubt but maybe won't have the full English again.

We had booked for two nights this week and upon arrival were greeted by very helpful staff who assisted with checkin and helping us with our bags to our room. The hotel has a lovely feel to it with proper old-fashioned service where nothing is too much trouble. We stayed in room 12 for 2 nights and it's a lovely big room which was spotlessly clean and really well presented. Breakfast and afternoon tea was fantastic and again nothing was too much trouble. We really couldn't fault the place, so much so that we stayed an extra night (this time room 16) and again the room was lovely and very clean.

Highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a great hotel in a good location in the centre of town and a big shout out to Iain who was the best host we've had and he really helped to make the trip special!

We've stayed in some lovely hotels around the World (some far more expensive than this) but this is one of few where we couldn't fault it at all and will definitely be back next time we are in the area!!

The Assembly House is not so much a hotel as a meeting place for lunch or tea with most of the accommodation in an adjacent annex. As of July 22 the restaurant is closed in the evenings and all service ceases around 5pm.

For those looking to stay, it’s worth noting that the external annex has stairs to the first and second floors with no lift, so those with mobility issues might want to check their suitability before booking. In the case of Room 11 which even the hotel website states might not be suitable for young children, I would add that it’s not suitable for anyone looking to avoid a knee replacement in the next ten years! To say the stairs leading to it are vicious is being kind. In total twenty-seven of them, some twisting through one hundred and eighty degrees in about ten feet means that only the fittest will find access reasonably easy. It was noticeable that no assistance with our baggage was offered on either check in or leaving, and to be honest I can understand why!

Once established in Room 11 it’s also worth noting that anyone over about 5’ 8” is at severe risk of striking their head on the beams. Hand grabs to swing over the stairwell gap to the lounge and warning signs for the beams are in place, but if you’ve had a great night out on the town and you’re heading to the bathroom in the middle of the night? The headache you wake up with might not just be due to alcohol!

That said. The Assembly House is a magnificent venue with a huge amount of history. During our two nights stay all the staff were friendly and helpful and the two breakfasts we had were cooked to perfection.

Our thanks go to the staff for a pleasurable visit.

Thank you for your review and for your kind words. We are a B&B rather than a hotel, and do not have communal spaces or dinner service. With regard to room 11, you are right, it does have steep stairs. On the online listing, we note: "Please note: there is a low ceiling in the short corridor between the bedroom and living room in this suite. This suite does not have a bath. Due to a steep staircase and steps between rooms, this suite may not be suitable for young children or those with mobility issues or any form of visual impairment." Hopefully this makes any such issues clear to potential bookers. We also say: "Room 11 is our most private suite, absolutely perfect for anyone looking to escape it all. Our hideaway in the eaves is one of our biggest suites and is right at the very top of the East Wing on the second floor. "It's reached by some fairly steep steps from one of the bedroom blocks and is out on its own with rooftop views across to our neighbour, St Peter Mancroft and The Forum. You feel as if you're in the trees from the private garret bedroom window, a world away from the hustle and bustle yet right in the heart of the city. "Room 11 has a wonderfully cosy vibe that makes you feel like you're a world away from everything going on outside your door - PLEASE watch your head if you're tall, when this was built in the 1700s, 'tall' meant something entirely different! That said, the main living spaces of bathroom, bedroom and lounge have plenty of head room." We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and thank you for mentioning the staff so glowingly, they really ar the jewel in our crown! We hope to see you again soon, AH

We had afternoon tea & stayed overnight as part of their deal which also included a bottle of fizz in our room and breakfast. We stayed in room 1 which is a large suite with a spacious living room with tea and coffee making facilities and french doors leading out to your own private courtyard a large bedroom with a very comfortable bed and massive bathroom. All was very clean & comfortable with period charm, bathrobes and slippers along with towels all provided as were two fans which were very much appreciated as we visited during a heatwave.
The afternoon tea was as always lovely with a good selection of sweet and savory and the breakfast was equally lovely with a good selection off a menu with continental also available.
Really can't fault the assembly rooms all the staff we uncounted were welcoming and friendly and polite ,we had a great stay and already looking forward to going again.

We had the afternoon tea, overnight stay deal which also included breakfast and a bottle of fizz and truffles in the room .

Afternoon tea was nice . Lots of different sandwiches, one savoury scone and one fruit scone. Clotted cream and strawberry jam provided . Top layer of desserts, particularly enjoyed the cheesecake. Lots of choice with the tea and coffees and refills included too .

Staff all lovely . Friendly polite enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the history of the building . They actually felt like they wanted to work there which was refreshing .

The place is immaculate, cannot fault it whatsoever .

The rooms are amazing . We stayed in Room 10 and the attention to details and quality is very very good . You really do get what you pay for and all the little touches that have made really do make ALL the difference .

Breakfast was good . Again lots of choice and nice quality .

Free parking is a nice touch and it’s a great location . Right in the centre of Norwich .

Thank you for a wonderful stay .

We were attending a wedding near Norwich (we are in London) and due to many reasons we looked for a place to stay in the very last minute. I searched and searched for a place, and finally found a room at The Assembly House, after I phoned the venue and confirming they would have a cot for our 2 year old son. We ended up not taking the toddler to the wedding, and had to make changes to our booking in the last minute, which they were very happy to do. They were also very happy to accommodate our need to potentially have to leave our luggage at the venue before travelling to the wedding (the wedding started at 11am and the check-in is at 3pm).
I pestered them to quote and book a taxi for us before our arrival on the day of the booking, and they were very happy to help us, making all necessary arrangements. Upon our arrival, at 10.30am they were also very happy to let us check-in earlier, as the previous guest had already left the room. We just had to wait for 10 minutes and were allowed to get to our booked room.
The room (room number 4) was so nice, better than I expected. The bed was so inviting (and it actually felt amazing after a busy day out). The bathroom was also big, with a nice shower and bath. Everything was spotless and I loved the artwork.
The next day we had a great breakfast that was also included in the hotel rate.
I'm so happy to have stayed in such a nice venue, especially considering I booked it at the last minute. Well done the team at The Assembly House for the good work!

Stayed there recently for two nights in room 8, total cost £350 B&B. One night at £190 (included an afternoon tea with Prosecco and £160 the other night.
Booking was confusing because the room rate is over £210 I think. Strangely, I was charged at £175 per night, each night.
Room was lovely, very comfortable four-poster bed, small terrace and well-appointed bathroom.
Location is perfect for central Norwich and free parking next door is included.
Afternoon tea was ok/good: nice sandwiches, scones and sausage rolls; cakes too colourful with far too much sponge and buttercream.
Breakfast was very much not up to scratch. The full English breakfast (“cooked to order”) was not freshly cooked: limp bacon, limp eggs, soft black pudding, hash browns not crisp, etc. Toast was only limply toasted supermarket sliced bread. The breakfast staff were attentive and very polite but we are not people who enjoy sending back food and creating stress all round. The establishment should be capable of getting it right all the time and clearly here their kitchen are well used to getting away with it.
In summary, we are glad we stayed there, had a great time and enjoyed our trip but we wouldn’t consider re-booking.

We visited for a birthday celebration, and having stayed in every other city centre hotel in Norwich over the years - this in my opinion is the best. We stayed in room 16, which is very large and well appointed. I love a bath that fills up in seconds (it really did) and has everything you need when you’re away - ironing board, fridge, nice local art on the walls, toiletries etc but the highlight was the quality of the bed and pillows which ensured a great nights sleep. Note - room 16 is accessed by stairs and no lift is available.
The service was excellent and all the team we spoke to were engaging. The breakfast in the morning was first class and tasty. Parking on site in the centre of the city is also helpful. It’s not cheap, but you do get what you pay for and it knocks socks off many London Hotels we visit. We’ll stay again.

My wife and I visited the assembly house for my wife’s 40th birthday with afternoon tea and a stay in room 1. Afternoon tea was Halloween themed and was well presented, plenty to choose from and delicious The service was outstanding and the room was huge and immaculate. We will be recommending The Assembly House to all our family and friends. A truly memorable stay.

Having had to rearrange our visit twice due to both my partner and subsequently myself testing positive for Covid, we finally got away this weekend. I honestly cannot thank the Assembly House enough for being so accommodating with our numerous changes of date and never once charging us even when things were last minute.
We were booked into Room 16 for the night, and we both agree that the photos did not do the room justice. We felt like we had a whole apartment to ourselves, and loved the beautiful furniture and finishes. The room was comfortable and filled with lots of personal touches - Prosecco on arrival, Bluetooth, handmade biscuits and even a Nespresso machine!
All of the staff were so friendly and accommodating from when we first stepped through the door to when we left - nothing was too much trouble. We also had an amazing breakfast served to the room, and rounded off our stay with the themed afternoon tea in the ballroom. Everything on the menu was delicious, and the presentation was beautiful.
If you are looking for a great place to stay in Norwich, I would 100% recommend choosing the Assembly House. The location is perfect (the city centre is on the doorstep), and the accommodation and service is worth every penny. We will definitely be staying again in the future!
