Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A large hotel overlooking the sea. The hotel is undergoing much needed refurbishment. The room was large and furnished in a nice lilac colour. The decor was very tasteful. The bed was comfortable with good quality bedding. Plenty of storage. There was a radiator and an extra heater. The bathroom was modern and clean. It had a non slip shower mat, which most hotels don’t provide. There was tv wifi and tea and coffee making facilities although no biscuits. The breakfast was adequate, offering a small continental and a basic hot choice. There is a bar in the hotel.

"We had the misfortune of staying at this hotel recently. Despite the bedding and surfaces/bathroom appearing to be clean, we were firstly shocked by the decor which was very slap dash and looked in no way like the photos online. There was dirty marks up the walls, damp walls with paint peeling off, a curtain rail with dust thicker than a nuns knickers, falling all over when we closed the curtains, mould on the lamp shade and stains all over the chair in the room, and when I closed the bathroom blind I was met with squashed dead bugs on the blind. Absolutely disgusting. If that wasn't bad enough, there was a domestic incident between guests on our floor that night which of course the hotel isn't responsible for, however there is no phone in the room to call down to reception, so l called from my mobile, and was met with an answering machine which really wasn't helpful, this led to me calling the police myself to deal with the incident. I am aware the officers informed reception upon their arrival that they had received a call from our room, despite this we had no correspondence from the hotel about the incident and when we eagerly checked out the next morning nothing was mentioned by the desk staff which I found odd. Whether a room is £50 or £500, save it and spend it elsewhere, really do not recommend this Hotel at all!

The stay in the hotel was very average, they massively need to upgrade the beds as me and my family had a terrible night sleeping on springs and rock hard what felt like steel beds! The breakfast though was lovely and the staff very friendly although at breakfast we felt that they were under staffed as it took a while for food to be replenished. The rooms need upgrading and modernising and some parts of the hotel need sprucing up and being fresher. Also maybe upgrade the lift as this was very unpredictable.

We both enjoyed our stay at the Royal Hotel. Majority of staff were nice and friendly. Breakfast was good and nicely presented. Entertainment, in form of a singer was performing on a Tuesday night. Room was good value for price paid. Spectacular views also. Recommended.

Im here tonight for one night only, booked today at very short notice. Looked at the reviews and didn't hold much hope....but, a warm welcome from the lady at reception (sorry didn't get name. Short blonde hair , very lovely) so don't just go off the reviews on TripAdvisor. The parking was easy at the rear, and the hotel looks nice in both the entrance and bar. The room was very clean, and spacious with great views of the Abbey and bay. It's dog friendly which is a big bonus. All the team here that we've encountered so far have been totally lovely. I'll post an update after breakfast, but they'll have to do really bad to make me not want to come back....up to now it's all stars!!!!!

Was on a coach trip on DBB basis. Room 4 ground floor was large and had everything we needed. Powerful shower and fluffy towels. Bed was fine. TV, hair dryer and tea/coffee (no biscuits 😫 though). It is an old hotel and showing wear in parts but for what we paid it was great. The bar staff and restaurant staff were 1st class. Food was good and plentiful, 3 or 4 choices every night. Breakfast was a buffet and again there was a decent choice, no one went hungry. There was the main bar area with fairly limited seating (3 coach parties were staying so it felt quite full), a quiet lounge with sofas and chairs but no bar so you had to walk through reception back to the bar for drinks, there was also a ballroom but I never went in there. Lovely outside seating area overlooking the Whale Bone arch and the town, so the location is brilliant. Did hear it's just been bought and the new owner will be upgrading which won't do it any harm, I'm sure the prices will increase though! Fantastic stay in a beautiful location

After 30 + years of visiting hotels via Shearings self drive sadly this will be our last. Firstly on arrival to our "box" of a room we found it was open and the dirty towels were still in the bathroom from the previous occupants 12th Feb room 116. We actually had new ones on the bed although they were holier than Sunday. We returned to our room one morning to find all the rooms along the corridor open due to man with camera equipment doing some sort of survey. Assured by some security man he was there to oversee proceedings, for security no one was informed this was due to take place. Wonder how the others along the landing would have felt knowing their room was open in full view of everyone. So hey ho carry on then only to return that night as 5pm to find our room open to the elements. It was open due to the fact it didn't close unless you slammed it shut. There was an inch gap around the door which not only let in light but also every sound from other guests. To the manager who is going to respond saying we will look into this and improve, this will not benefit our experience at all.

Dear Annette W, I am very sorry to hear that your room was not ready for you to check-in. I will discuss the matter with our Housekeeping Manager to ensure that rooms are made ready for check-in. Regarding an engineer with camera, we are trying to start our refurbishment project and require full plan of the building. Those engineers hired by us and i can insure you that all guest belongs are safe. I will discuss with them to make sure they are closing every single door properly so that doesn't happen in future. Unfortunately we don't know all the time which part of the hotel will require scanning, that's why we couldn't inform you in advance. I can only apologise one more time. I hope that we can welcome you again to Royal Whitby and I can assure you of a better experience on your next stay if you would give us the opportunity. Best wishes, General Manager
