We booked with Shearings as have travelled many times with them and very good value.
We arrived at the hotel after a long drive, the coach and driver Mike were both excellent.
We were allocated a room on the second floor at the end of the L shaped building. Rather a long narrow room, there was only a foot or so between the end of the bed and the wall so caution was required when visiting the loo in the night! There was obviously a water problem as the end wall showed signs of the ingress of water which had streaked down the wall. The window was ancient and in a poor condition and had been screwed shut so no fresh air could be had.
Apart from this the decor was pleasant enough but the carpet could have done with a good scrub. The bath/shower room was a good size and we always had hot water available. It has to be said that the toilet paper was pitifully thin which defeats the object of saving money as you had to use so much of it! False economy.
The view from the room was lovely with views of the sea and cliff top coffee shop which was lit up at night, and brightened up the room so we could see where we were going in the dark. Unfortunately our bed wasn't the best. The mattress was very hard and had a trampoline effect, (if one moved then so did the other) we overcame this to a degree by placing a folded blanket beneath the bottom sheet. A shame as we have found the beds in Bay hotels to be generally comfortable.
The dining room. Nicely decorated and well run with super friendly efficient staff. Breakfast was buffet style and food quality very good as were the evening meals, albeit a little on the small side as others have said. I had the Chef's specials all week which were very good.
We didn't use the evening entertainment so cannot comment here.
Bar staff were friendly and efficient but prices a bit on the steep side.
A word of warning. Whitby is a beautiful resort but is very hilly and not suited to those with a mobility problem. This hotel is at the top of the town and has no bus service. There is a steep flight of steps to the harbour level, or a gentler route to town if required.
All in all we enjoyed our stay (apart from a good old soaking in York, we've been there three times now and it's always rained!)
A big thank you to the hotel staff and our driver Mike who was so knowledgeable of the area.

We have visited this hotel many times when owned by Shearings and love its location. The new owners are working hard to restore its popularity. We had a lovely spacious room with walk in shower.and it is worth paying for a sea view The room was spotlessly clean. The breakfast was ok with a varied choice and changed to buffet breakfast when restrictions changed. We did not have the evening meal so could not comment. This hotel is perhaps now on the higher price range considering it is rather dated and tired in places but we feel it was worth the money for its location. My main criticism was the poor arrangements for parking. We knew street parking was a problem at this time of year so I contacted and asked if I could book hotel parking (contact made by email through booking.com) . I received a reply saying I could pay for parking on arrival. When I arrived I was told I could park on the gravel car park and fortunately found a space but it was on first come first served basis. I was rather confused as to why I couldn't book one of the spaces marked for residents as I had booked well in advance as soon as the hotel started bookings. The staff are friendly and covid safety was good. Even after restrictions ended staff serving at breakfast were wearing masks We will definitely return . I'm sure the new owners will make improvements over time . The flower boxes on the veranda were beautiful. A very nice touch . Good luck to the new owners and staff ( great to see some of the old Shearings staff back including our friendly bar man and all smiling waitress who greeted us with enthusiasm -wish I knew their names ) as we hope to visit many times but perhaps next time when Whitby is quieter as the great staycation has hits the town which is great for trade .

We stayed for 3 nights, Mon to Thurs, on arrival the front of the hotel looks tired, but scaffolding was being erected, so work on the outside is in progress, don't let this put you off. The hotel as it's own car park at the rear with a rate of £6 per night, check in was easy with very helpful staff, our room was on the front has requested, with stunning views over Whitby. All staff were pleasant and helpful from bar to restaurant. The dinner menu is a table d'hote but an ala carte is available if requested, with a small additional charge. Breakfast consists of cereals, porridge, fruit juice, full english, other items have an additional charge. Entertainment was available in the ballroom on certain nights. The bedroom was comfortable and spacious, with brewing facilities, plenty of hot water. Due to covid you need to ask reception for towels if you need them changing, social distancing, sanitising is all in place, I would recommend a stay at this hotel, we will definitely be returning in the future.

I visited this hotel on the 9th to 13th March 2020 on a Shearing's 5 day break, on our way to the hotel we were told that there had been a function over the weekend and our rooms would not be ready until 4pm, at 8 pm we eventually got our room.
Just before we arrived the Shearing's driver told us about the Nora virus and that the hotel was clean, on arrival the hotel manager got on the coach to reassure us everything was clean, but sorry to say that was not true and the virus was rampant in the hotel.
The hotel was supposed to have had a deep clean, no, it had not and people were dropping with the virus.
Shearing’s would not do anything to help us and should have moved all their customers out and they failed.
We used to travel with Shearing’s several times a year and now it’s finished we will never travel again with Shearing’s, we were all treated like animals.
And to finish off, I got the virus filled the forms in which was a wast of time

Although this hotel is in a very good position it is the only good thing going for it. Advertised as a three star hotel it certainly does not deserve this grading. Our room was not of a three star rating, On entering it was obvious the carpet had not been vacuumed prior to our occupation. The bathroom and plumbing were archaic to say the least as was the decoration and finishing. The tea and coffee makings were in paper cups with no tray. On the second night the roof leaked in the bathroom causing water to drip through the ceiling light rendering that room unusable. We were moved to a different room which was worse. The shower cubicle was the smallest with loose fittings. There was only one usable electric socket out of which came an extension lead which fed the TV, table lamp and the kettle. The kettle lead was to short therefore we had to boil the kettle on the floor.
The service and food in the hotel restaurant were of no better standard, we gave the restaurant two chances with the evening meal then decided to eat elsewhere.
All in all the holiday spoiled by the hotel.
Had my wife and I not been with a tour operator we would have moved out.

Hi ericbE910MG, Please accept my apologies that your stay was not as enjoyable as you or I would have hoped. I am recruiting for more team members and once employed the service levels will improve. We are still operating in covid restrictions and therefore tea and coffee is provided in disposable cups. Please accept my sincere apologies for the roof leak which is being investigated and will be resolved. Regards Andrew

We have just returned from a three night much needed break at very short notice in Whitby. The hotel is expensive for the run down appearance of the place both inside and out. The positives the reception staff could not have been more helpful in getting the best deal for us. The view from the hotel and our sea view room was lovely across the harbour to the abbey. The first room 303 with two single beds was exceptable with a modern bathroom and walkin shower. We moved to a double room 306 for our second and third night as part of the deal but what a difference, run down bathroom from the 60's a shower you could not turn on broken bath panel and filthy shower curtain and the room had not been cleaned for a long while thick dust along the top of the headboard and worn out carpets. We complained to the reception staff until it was put right and it was. The breakfasts were enjoyable with good quality food especially for the full English breakfast, service a little haphazard but friendly and cheerful waitresses. We had one evening meal in our deal and my wife had the confit of duck which she really enjoyed I had the chicken which was a little dry but starter and sweet delicious. The restaurant manager was very polite and attentive ensuring everything was ok.
I suggest the owners are taking advantage of the staycation and opening up unsuitable rooms to make as much money as possible.

The room was not clean with a build up of soap scum under the taps that had been there a long time, dirty rusty fixtures in the bathroom and was above a noisy plant room that was cycling all night so we didn't get much sleep.
We paid for a superior room with sea view but the room was at street level so the view was between parked cars, through net curtains to stop pedestrians looking into the room.
The breakfast was basic self service and was like a rugby scrum to get food - no social distancing at all!
Overall the hotel is very tired and definitely not worth the money being charged. They have to decide whether to rebrand as a basic cheap hotel or refurbish the hotel given the superb location it is a great shame that it has been allowed to deteriorate so far.

Hi John M, Please accept my sincere apologies that you did not have an enjoyable stay. The hotel is in need of updating and I have employed an additional member of the team in maintenance along with a painter and decorator. We do ask guests to book a time for breakfast so that we can try to control the number of people in the restaurant at any one time. Regards Andrew

First things first. The Royal is very, very run down. Just a glance at the outside tells you that. And after reading the truly awful reviews we were very dubious about staying. But the staff were all excellent and are trying in very difficult circumstances. Bad points…on arriving in the room, we were greeted by two paper cups stuffed with milk cartons and stirrers. We though they were rubbish, but it was actually the cups for the tea and coffee making. I know it cuts down on washing up, but it gave a terrible impression. The furniture was reminiscent of a care home. Breakfast was clearly cooked en masse then served up, the bacon was leathery and the scrambled egg was dried up.
Good points. The location and views are stunning. The staff were unfailingly lovely. Despite the overall feel being shabby and the windows being dirty the room and linen were spotlessly clean. The Wi-Fi worked and the TV was fine. The plug sockets with built in USB sockets was a really nice touch. The bathroom was good and the shower was excellent.
There are little things that wouldn’t cost much that would make staying at the Royal a better experience. It wasn’t truly awful, I’ve stayed in worse places. It’s just a shame that such an iconic hotel has become so run down, and I wonder if, given people’s expectations nowadays, if there will ever be the will and the money to bring it back to scratch.

We just came back yesterday after staying here for a break Friday to Monday. We were on a coach trip and paid extra to have a sea view room. A nice big room with a view of the sea and it was clean with a comfortable bed but that’s about it. Everything else was bad. Food was served lukewarm and sometimes even cold. Tea and coffee were lukewarm. Served meals on a small side plate and service was very slow. Every single meal whether breakfast or dinner there was always a problem. Food was poor and there was always something missing off the table either cutlery, glasses, milk, salt and pepper sachets butter etc. The hotel itself is badly needing maintenance and decorating. Rotten windows, paint peeling off, Ladies toilet near the dining room is a disgrace. 3 times I reported no paper towels to dry our hands and I was told every time they would contact housekeeping. They put small boxes of paper tissues you use to blow your nose for us to dry our hands. The whole place is a real let down. Most of the staff work hard and I understand the waiting staff have not long started working there but they are sadly lacking proper training. There was no room cleaning, due to COVID and the same for porters for the luggage (unless you really were unable to carry it yourself} . The lift can only hold maximum 4 people without luggage so it was a long wait most times for the lift. We have been going here many times over the years but unless things improve drastically we will not be going back. A lovely old hotel has been left to deteriorate and it is such a shame. The one thing this hotel has going for it is the location. Lovely views over the sea and a perfect view of the Abbey, Whitby itself is also a lovely place but we would stay somewhere else if we ever came back here.

Hello Jeanette D, Please accept my sincere apologies that your stay was not as enjoyable as you had hoped. We are still operating under covid restrictions and reopened on 17th May. Employing sufficient team members has and continues to be a challenge. Hopefully this will improve and I can concentrate on training and improving the service standards. Due to covid restrictions we currently can not operate a buffet breakfast and therefore we have to take orders at the table and bring all items from the kitchen. We are asking all guests to now book a time for breakfast so that we can stagger the amount of guests at anyone time and improve the service standards. We are all hoping that restrictions will be lifted on 21st June. (Subject to government sign off) Regards Andrew

First the positives.Lovely person on reception.Parking available at rear of hotel at £6 per day.Great location for going yo town.
The hotel is dated and needs attention. The room we had overlooked the area where the staff take their breaks so very noisy at times and we needed window open as very hot.
We did not pay a lot to stay here so I guess you get what you pay for.We did not eat here but we heard a man at reception say it was the worst breakfast he had ever had and was wanting to see the manager.Breskfast was £10 each so we ate ours in Wetherspoons in the town.
Towels, bedding and in room supplies are only changed or replenished if you ask at reception.
This hotel is on a hill so if you have walking issues you might find it difficult.
