We stayed at The Arches for a couple of nights recently and were amazed at how safe the owners have made this place, whilst retaining the charm & style of a wonderful guesthouse... The Arches is located up on the West Cliff B&B area of Whitby, just a five minute walk into the town... Rates vary depending on your length of stay and room type but are usually between £80-£90 (£50-£60 single) with the attic rooms slightly cheaper and daily charge a further £10 reduced if you do not have breakfast... We paid £75 x 2nights (including breakfast bag for an attic room)... Rooms are clean & well kept, with flat screen TVs, storage, hairdryer, tea/coffee facilities etc... street parking is via a parking pass you collect on check-in and leave in your car... Due to the present Covid restrictions the usual full breakfasts are not available at present but breakfast/brunch bags are provided... You select whatever you wish from various options from hot bacon & sausage baguette to salmon & cream cheese bagel... you are also given fruit juice, cake, fruit, etc - really filling and the breakfast bags are a great idea to combat the present Covid challenges... We were a late booking so the only room available was an attic room which the owner pre-warns guests of low ceilings/beams etc... we had room 10 and had no issues with the room itself, though the last staircase is a little cramped when you have your travel case/bags but no hardship... we managed easily, with no issues, this despite me being 6ft 3in & 21 stone & my wife recovering from a broken foot in a protective boot... As well as our room (with beams) in attic (room10) i also attach photos of a spacious room6 & slightly smaller room 3 as their doors were open and guess rooms made up in readiness for new guests... The check-in process is straight forward as the owner texts you full details before hand and we only saw others the morning we checked out... In summary, lovely B&B that has all you need and is Covid safe... highly recommended and we'll stay again...

We stayed at The Arches for 2 nights, and as regular visitors, we new that Dave and his team would have everything organised to make our stay safe in these strange times. Breakfast/brunch bags were delicious and very substantial, and the rooms were spotless as usual. Dave had emailed us with information that allowed us to self check-in and provided a lot of information about parking etc. We did not meet any other guests, but considered this a positive in the circumstances - the 'personal touch' was still evident but at a socially safe distance!! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The adaptations to 'normal service' are minimal but totally necessary and we appreciate the extra work that has gone in to making The Arches a safe environment for us ,whilst maintaining the very high standards we love. We look forward to visiting again soon.

A lovely, comfortable guest house just a short walk from Whitby town centre. Its our 2nd time at the Arches and it definitely wont be the last. Dave the host is so friendly and welcoming, nothing is to much bother. Unfortunately we had to cut our weekend short due to personal reasons but Dave was on hand, really supportive and helpful. The rooms are nice and clean and the place feels really secure. You are sent a text few days before your arrival with the door entry code. On arrival there are envelops with your name on containing your room key and a free parking permit. We managed to get a parking space right outside the place. Cant comment on the breakfast as we only ever stay bed only. Walk into Whitby is 5 minutes. Thanks again Dave for all your help and will hopefully see you again not until 2021 though. Jennie

Had a message from the owner with the door code to self check-in. The key was in the hall. The room was small and clean enough. There is no breakfast provided. We pre order from a large choice sandwich/baguette along with juice, fruit, a thin piece of cake and a toilet roll. The baguette was still warm and very tasty. The cake was not. I texted the owner as I felt unsafe as other guests were drunk and getting rowdy. He started to reply but then stopped. I heard nothing from him. Fortunately the arguments died down. The location is good, only 10 minutes from town, but it feels so impersonal. I would prefer somewhere where I meet a human being, but other people may prefer the lack of fuss.

Response from David Clements, Owner at Arches Guesthouse
Responded 29 Aug 2020
Thanks for reviewing. I'm glad you think we were clean, and that although we're offering a different breakfast - you felt there was a good choice. You liked the baguette, and the location. You did speak to me several times on the single night you stayed. The 'rowdy' people were a group of couples that had booked in order to come away and enjoy themselves, it was only 8:30 on a Friday night when you highlighted the noise, and they had only just arrived. Were it gone 10:00, I would have spoken to them. They stayed for three night's and were no trouble at all, this is their second visit to the Arches. As regards the 'fuss', unfortunately coronavirus has led to us offering a lower level of 'fuss' than we would normally like to provide, but we are all trying to stay safe, and still offer a good service to our guests in a safe manner. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy yourself.
