Stayed for one night last for my girlfriends birthday. Had a massage in the spa and relaxed in the pool. On arrival the room was ready early and able to check in, we stayed across from the main hotel in an executive double room which was over 2 floors and was more than large enough for us. Spa staff very friendly and accommodating felt really relaxed throughout. In the evening we ate in the brassiere restaurant which was lovely, staff were friendly and service was fantastic. The room was extremely quiet and bedroom had black out blinds which worked very well. Breakfast was really good and again the staff were fabulous. I would definitely recommend staying here the staff were all helpful and friendly and even helped in ordering flowers for my girlfriend which were placed in the room on arrival. They even gave her some chocolates as a gift. Was certainly more expensive than other spas I’ve used but certainly the best and well with an extra few pounds for the treatment and service we received. Thanks to all the team for a great stay.

We (a family of two adults and 4 children, aged 2 to 16) visited for one night on 28 December. We booked last minute, having cancelled a planned family trip to London because of the high numbers of COVID cases reported in the capital.

The lady on the telephone dealing with reservations was very friendly and helpful, booking us two “Fancy” rooms next to each other in The Keep (which is about a 5 min walk to the main hotel building where the restaurant and spa is situated; there is a vehicle shuttle service for those who don’t wish / aren’t able to walk). She went above and beyond to make sure the rooms were next to each other as the older children were staying in there on their own.

The Keep has its own concierge; both gentlemen were courteous, helpful and friendly. You can order drinks and nibbles there in the downstairs lounge. One of the concierge drove us to the spa / pool in the main hotel building in the evening as it was raining heavily.

The pool and spa were clean and well looked after. Some of the lockers were broken and/or the security code on the locker wouldn’t work. During peak arrival hours (3pm to 6pm) you have to book a one hour slot so as not to overcrowd the pool because of the pandemic. We were not told this during the phone reservation the day before or when checking in on the day. We were able to use the pool later on but not at the time we had wanted as all the slots were booked up. A minor grumble but it would have been useful to have been informed of this at check in.

Breakfast was of good quality. Again, you have to book a slot in advance so as not to overcrowd the restaurant. We booked for 10am. The hotel was fully booked and service at breakfast (for hot food) was slow, although our waitress was friendly and did apologise for the delay. Like many hospitality venues presently, they were very understaffed.

We paid £590 total for the two rooms on a B&B basis which, whilst not cheap, is about what I would expect for a smart hotel of this standard, and bearing in mind that the “Fancy” rooms are a little more spacious and better appointed than the standard double rooms.

In all, I would visit again. It wasn’t perfect but, save for the one or two minor issues referred to above, we thought it was a nice hotel with good facilities and is very handy for Whitby, without the hustle and noise of the town itself. The staff was, without exception, friendly and polite and they were clearly all working hard in difficult circumstances.

What an amazing stay during Covid 19. It is not the first time I have stayed with my husband at Raithwaite Hall, and it's always been a fantastic experience but this time trumped previous stays. As we all know the current circumstances with covid 19 and the reluctance most of us have in going away at this difficult time but when.my husband suggested a night away for our anniversary, I couldn't of felt more safe or looked after at the hotel.
Everyone wore masks whilst walking around the hotel, but once seated for a meal or drink they could remove the masks. Serving tables were provided so staff did not need to lean over guests and the food as always was outstanding. Breakfast was wonderfully organised where staff stood behind screens and asked if you would like any of the different items behind the screen, a tray was made up and then carried to a serving table next to where we were seated. All social distancing was adhered to and although the hotel was busy you felt safe and were very aware that high standards were continuously being carried out.
The room - well what can I say. As immaculate as ever the additional precautions were plain to see. Complimentary items were bagged individually as was the toilet roll, and you were encouraged to take the complimentary bags and even toilet roll with you on depature as bags of items would only be disposed of, so new and sterile packs could be provided for the next guests. The tv remotes were bagged, the menus laminated to ensure sterile wipe down. Hand sanitizer dispensers were placed around the hotel and you never had to look hard for one, even the door pads to open the doors were anti bac!
The staff were extremely friendly, organised, relaxed and you felt well looked after.
There was even a singer in the garden with such an amazing voice that enjoying an afternoon beverage in the sun was truly tranquil and most relaxing experience.
Well done Raithwaite Estate staff, you have got it spot on, i can not waot to stay again!

I feel the Raithwaite Hotel used Covid-19 as a reason to dupe guests and cut corners with almost every aspect of the experience. Obviously there are elements requires, such as no room cleaning and mask wearing but here are some that were just, cheap, tacky and part of the reason the place should be off-limits.
• No fresh towels (because of Covid, although ‘if you ask, we can look in to it);
• No hairdryer, (because of Covid);
• No coffee or milk sachets beyond the 2 allocated to your room at the start of your stay, (because of Covid, we don’t want to put staff at risk unnecessarily)
• No Spa facilities, (because of Covid; ‘we felt it better to let people use the treatment rooms to change rather than use the changing rooms.’ All were closed when we were allocated our slot to swim, in the overcrowded pool);
• Limited breakfast menu options and run out of items by 8.30, (because of Covid, ‘we don’t want to carry too much stock…’ Not many things leave me speechless but this did;
• Spraying of disinfectant across tables when you are eating, (clearly because of Covid);
• No heat in the dining room, (because of Covid, we don’t want people to be too uncomfortable.’. No mention of the front entrance door left open for a gale to blow through, no doubt due to Covid) but you can use the ‘Conservatory’. We were then taken to a sparse light room with no cutlery or place settings, resembling an ill-attended function room. As a couple, with a booking, we were put on a table for 8 and left to it. We ended up leaving after 10 minutes and no sign of people wanting to serve you or even share their special Covid free cutlery.

Some of the staff were lovely and were let down by the venue and the tacky cost cutting tactics, others, such as the lady in the ‘spa’, seemed to be in their element shouting instructions, telling you off for taking towels past a certain point.

The first room assigned was clearly used by smokers, despite denials. We were moved. I assume the debris around the tables in the bar were somehow justified by the whole ‘Covid’ experience.

I am sympathetic to business in the current climate but this is a potentially lovely place that should shut the doors until they get their act together.

I booked a night stay in a deluxe room at Raithwaite Hall for a relaxing spa treat. Upon arrival we were told we weren’t staying in the Hotel but in a place called the ‘Keep’ approx 200yrds away and to check in there! We were offered a golf buggy ride to the Keep location, but we decided to drive there and put our car in the car park near the ‘mini’ hotel.

The Keep is a bit like little travel lodge or premier inn with limited facilities and 3x the price. The room, although big was basic (not in anyway deluxe) and furniture shabby. We were on the top floor, there was a balcony but strangely there was a huge brick wall to prevent any view of the woodland. As this isn’t an old building it must have been designed this way!

The spa and restaurants are in the main building so each time you want to go there you either walk or ask reception to arrange transport, a faff on to be honest. It’s a too short for a car journey but far enough to annoy you if you walk. Trundling up and down between the hotel and Keep maybe ok in the summer but on a cold Feb weekend it’s not ideal.

I did mention upon check in I booked the hotel but the best they could do was another room in the courtyard but would have to wait until it was serviced again not ideal.

No mini fridge in room, no safe box, staff not welcoming, spa average, extremely limited vegetarian / vegan options. the ‘Keep’ totally ridiculous.

Dear Love-Hollibobs Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay with us. We are disappointed to read that your stay did not meet expectations. The Keep is the more modern of our two hotel buildings, offering space, comfort and a relaxing atmosphere. All Keep rooms have outside space, and a few rooms do have the castellations as the boundary to their balcony. We always recommend that you book direct so you can talk to one of our dedicated Reservations team and discuss all of your requirements for your stay, additionally we call guests, if we have their number, a couple of days before arrival to check details, we are sorry if this was not your experience. Many people ask to stay at the Keep as they prefer it, but everyone has their own preferences, we hope that you will return to Raithwaite, stay in the Hall or perhaps try one of the cottages, find your own preference, the Estate has much to offer and we are disappointed when a guest's stay is not as they would have hoped. Warmest Regards The Raithwaite Team

Spent three nights with my husband and we stayed in one of the courtyard rooms. We had happily spent over £600 for the stay hoping for a little luxury after the past 18 months at home! Unfortunately due to what must have been confusion on Booking.com the breakfast we believed we had paid for was not included. Nonetheless we booked breakfast for the following morning - however we did not book for the following two days as we were very disappointed with the quantity and quality of the cooked food which was almost cold when it arrived having been served on cold plates.
The room was actually a two floor unit which was quite nicely set out. However it was very hot and stuffy. The website states air conditioning under ‘facilities’ so naturally we’d expected an air conditioned room but we’re informed only certain rooms had that facility. The staff did provide us with a fan and a top sheet for the bed so we could use it instead of the duvet. We considered opening the windows but as there was running water behind the unit it attracted swarms of midges and other insects which came in if windows were opened. The fan was ineffective and we really did not sleep well due to the intense heat. The room was reasonably clean but not spotless and would have benefitted from maybe a small fridge to cool drinks being that it was so hot.
The final straw came when I went to check out and was presented with a bill for £210 - which when I questioned seemed was for breakfast every day plus some drinks we had. Once the receptionist checked thoroughly the amended bill for £44 actually agreed with what I had expected. No apology was given for the error.
All in all we had neither the facilities or service we would have expected from a hotel so highly rated. We stay in a lot of 4 and 5 star hotels around the world - this sadly is not one we will be in a hurry to visit again

What a lovely location, secluded and private, staff were exceptional, as were the facilities and the food. The main property was of a high standard for cleanliness, furnishing and presentation and the rooms were very adequately supplied to help guests. A mini oasis in a popular tourist part of Yorkshire. Will definitely be returning.

Satisfactory overall but not the quality expected of a luxury hotel.

Check in. Needs seriously looking at for those staying in the Keep. If you do not know you are in the Keep you will probably end up parking in the main car park, taking your luggage to the main reception, collecting the key and finding out you are in the wrong building, taking the luggage back to the car and car to a different car park then unloading again at the correct location. The hotel needs to send information in advance to people about how to check in without all of this.

Rooms (in the Keep). Unable to alter the temperature. Radiator valves fixed, air conditioning unit temperature control inoperative, no openable windows (just a door that opens onto the patio that cannot be safely left open at night). Roller blinds awkward, screwdriver found on shelf.

Meals. Dinner menu mainly the same each day with just a few specials added. Ten percent service charge automatically added. At breakfast, if you are in the dog friendly area you have a long walk to the buffet in the main restaurant if you want fruit juice, cereal or toast. There is no buffet present in the dog friendly restaurant.

Information. There is no information channel on the TV or supplied information sheet. It was expected that there would be information on local tourist spots, pubs, chemists, churches, parking laces in Whitby etc etc. as well as information on how to get between buildings if it is raining (we noticed covered transport vehicles around so assume these can be used??).

Grounds. Nice grounds but Beck Walk closed although marked on maps in reception. No information as to why or whether it will ever be re-opened. Similarly no information on rewilding areas although access to hem is signposted.

The hotel asks for feedback after you arrive back home but seems not to respond even if you give constructive comments. I now doubt if they read it.

The above are the not so good points. The good points are the nice grounds and walks from them and the helpful and very friendly staff. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are of good quality. Dogs are well catered for (although the cost of £15 pounds per day is a bit steep).

We have just returned from a stay at the Raithwaite hotel for one night. On arrival we found the grounds and hotel nice however the first gripe came when the receptionist told us we were not able to pay cash unless we pay exact amount as they are trying not to take any cash.. we were not made aware of this but perhaps it says it somewhere on their website?

Our room was on the second floor directly in front of the lifts.. the room was an instant disappointment with how small it was!! I’m not sure which “room style” we were in but it was smaller than anything shown on their website including their cosy room which looks to be their smallest one so it was a little shocking, I have stayed in bigger premier in rooms and this cost us £205 for one night. The dressing downs were very coarse and ripped and towels hardened from so much use.

We went downstairs for a drink in their bar which was nicely decorated and looked over a nice outdoor seating area and gardens however it was completely lacking in any sort of atmosphere, no music and just very bland and they also had many popular wines out of stock which was a shame but we had a couple of different drinks from their menu which were nice. The bar staff were very nice and accommodating with drinks being brought quick and suggestions made for what we might like.

The spa was okay with clean changing rooms and towels provided, the spa area is very small and the hot tub I felt looked murky almost dirty and was cold which put us off a little bit but the steam room was nice! Unfortunately the treatments were all booked up which we were hoping for.

Dinner was OVERPRICED!!! I had the ravioli which consisted of 4 pieces of ravioli absolutely saturated in oil with a sprinkle of cheese on top and was £18. Breakfast the next day was okay but my partner ordered the “seasoned fruits” and was brought a single green apple in a bowl which was very confusing, when we said it must be for someone else they said no it’s the fruit you ordered which we thought was going to be a selection of “seasoned fruits” which is what is stated on the menu but they said they had run out of everything else.
The main breakfast we had which was the creamy mushroom and poached egg was okay but the eggs were undercooked and snotty and leaking water into the rest of the food. It was also a very small portion with one egg and and one piece of toast and some mushrooms.

We left at 10:30 the next day as they seemed to want to get people in and out at breakfast it all felt a little rushed.

Overall the hotel was pleasant but there is definitely room for improvement in terms of atmosphere, food and things like towels and dressing gowns.

I think the price is way off for what you receive and is like a premier inn but sat in nicer grounds.

Dear lizziea917, Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Raithwaite Sandsend. We have been delighted to open up once more and welcome guests back through our doors, but as the whole of the hospitality industry goes from zero to 100 in one giant leap there have been supply chain issues, and we apologise if these impacted your stay, we promise to do better. All constructive criticism is gratefully received and creating a relaxing, harmonious environment through music is one area, although we recognise that there are many guests who find background music an annoying distraction. Apologies for any miscommunication regarding cash, we are trying to run in a cashless way and this is stated on our pre arrival emails, we will look at making this much clearer, thank you. We hope you will choose to visit us again in the future. Warmest Regards The Raithwaite Team

We stayed at this hotel for one night, with our springer spaniel. We were in the duplex 404, by the driveway and overlooking a dirty waterway surrounded by weeds. The duplex is in need of a refurb as it’s beige, boring and lacking character, especially for this supposedly luxury accommodation eg. all the metal buttons on the desk chair were missing, wooden furniture very tired, and just two paper cups, a kettle and tea etc was shabby. No dressing table mirror in the bedroom but 2 televisions!! The duplexes could have been staff accommodation in a previous life, and one would have thought with all that land there could have been a decent view from at least one window.

Breakfast was good given the current climate, except I received the wrong yoghurt, wrong juice, watery scrambled egg, but the bacon was the best. We were also seated on a large table, on our own in an empty dining room. Only when we saw others go into the conservatory did we request to be moved, which was lovely. We ordered our ‘continental items’, and then separately the hot items. The hot items arrived far too quickly as we ate the cold items, so our cooked breakfast was cold by the time we ate it!! Beautifully decorated conservatory, shame about the service.

We also noticed that some guests were given welcome packs with masks and sanitisers, but not us. However we were offered a drink on our arrival - lovely piña colada

The gardens were very well manicured, and there were some wonderful walks in the hotel grounds of which we did a couple.

We suspect Covid will be used as an excuse, but the facilities were extremely basic for the price we paid for our accommodation. We were really looking forward to staying at what was advertised as a luxury hotel, but sorry to say it didn’t meet anywhere near our expectations. The spa was closed, and the pool had to be booked - no room for us!!! We felt very unwelcome and the hotel lacked atmosphere and warmth. More attention needs to be paid to detail. We would not recommend this very overpriced and soulless hotel to friends.
