We have spent many happy Whitby holidays at The Wheeldale over the years. We call it "our Whitby fix"!
The Wheeldale is a charming family-run hotel that blends stunning sea views, warm hospitality, and a delightful home-from-home atmosphere. The Coleman family have run The Wheeldale for over 20 years and welcome you with open arms. Their passion for Whitby and dedication to creating a memorable stay are evident in every detail.
14 spotless rooms are a haven of comfort, many boasting breathtaking vistas of the North Sea. Each morning you will be treated to a delicious breakfast with the freshest local ingredients (or a lighter option) that will set you up perfectly for a day exploring Whitby's treasures.
The location of The Wheeldale facing the sea on the North Promenade is unbeatable. Just steps away from the golden sands, and Whitby's charming harbour with its busy boats and fresh seafood stalls is within easy walking distance. The iconic Whitby Abbey and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum are both close by.
The Wheeldale ticks all the boxes for us. A stunning location, free parking, exceptional hospitality, and a touch of family charm. The Wheeldale is a place you won't want to miss.

My wife and I stayed at The Wheeldale, Whitby, for 2 nights last week and we would highly recommend this small hotel. On arrival we were met by Toby, The Manager, who immediately made us feel welcome. We checked in and he gave us information about Whitby including places to eat. The first thing we noticed about the hotel was how clean it was. In fact, my wife said it was absolutely spotless. It actually smelt so clean and fresh. This was a credit to all the staff. The room we stayed in was quite large with an excellent ensuite bathroom and a large TV which had Sky TV included in the price we paid. There were tea coffee making facilities in the room and again it was extremely clean - in fact spotless. The Hotel was extremely good value for money. I had a full English breakfast on both mornings. The produce used was excellent - really good quality. Toby also did the cooking. The lady who served the breakfast was extremely friendly and helpful. Again, a credit to the hotel. Each morning we met Jenna who was in reception - Toby's sister - who was also really friendly and helpful. This small hotel is credit to all the staff and the owner. It is to be highly recommended and we are hoping to stay there again in the near future.

We had the only twin room which is on the ground floor in the annex. It was immaculately clean with a double and a single bed. What was particularly nice was the fact that the two beds are separated by an internal door so it’s almost like getting two rooms for the price of one. The room had a large TV with Sky and a proper chair (a nice extra for relaxing when the weather isn’t great though 2 would be even better).

Breakfast was nice and very generous - choices are relatively limited for the hot course but with all the bases covered and they were happy to adapt the full English to suit.

I would recommend booking directly with the hotel either by phone or through their website since prices are cheaper and they do run a loyalty scheme if you plan to return. You can also look at the rooms who all seem to have their own unique feature (ours was a jacuzzi bath) and some have sea views which are stunning before choosing which one to stay in.

As regards parking, the drive can be a bit tight but you can always get a permit to park on the road (£2 for 2 days) from the hotel. The road is permit only so there’s usually space.

Overall a lovely relaxing stay with an honesty bar in the lounge which was a nice touch (wine, lager, cider, soft and hot drinks available).

Avoid this place like your mother in law. When you phone to book the lad on the phone sounds like a auctioneer at a local cattle market speaks at 100mph so anyway you pay the money get there on the website it says historic it's that alright I think Vera Lynne must of gone to nursery here. As I'm not loaded I thought it was reasonable for the price on my budget As a kid I was made to walk the plank. We couldn’t afford a dog. Anyway we got to the room and it had 2 little coffee packs and couple of sugar and milk ideal if your a 4 year old and having a tea party with your dolls. The customer service was was like my bank balance outstanding. Not it was terrible in the bathroom I said staff must was hands I was stood there a good two hour's but no one came to wash my hands. And the full English? Nothing full English about it. On the menu it said pork locally sourced well the farmer must be breading pigs and Flamingos as it was brown on the outside and pink in the middle. And the toilet paper was cheap Whoever it was that invented single ply toilet paper I'd like to shake his hand.

Response from Peter Coleman, General Manager at The Wheeldale
Responded 1 Apr 2024
Hello, thank you for your feedback and comments. Now let's state some facts. Upon booking, I answered round upon round of questions and felt I had answered them correctly and was trying to make sure you had the desired room for your needs for the duration of your stay. After 3-4 phone calls, I believe you finally decided to book. Upon arrival, we greeted you in a friendly manner, and even helped carry your large amounts of luggage up two flights of stairs for you. About an hour later, I had bumped into you and I asked "Is the room okay for you?" to which you replied "It's okay." I said "what's wrong with it?" You said you "would of preferred a room with a balcony." An hour later, we moved you to your desired room and carried your luggage for you again and even gave you out of goodwill the difference in the cost of the room (£74). Not to mention the cost of recleaning the room which you didn't want to stay in! We thought by refunding the difference it would keep you happy and provide a fair service. Now regarding our breakfast I would be very suprised if any of our sausages were sent out pink, as they are all probed and cooked correctly. Our 5* hygiene rating and knowledgeable and capable breakfast team backs this up. To which none of this, by the way, was mentioned to our server. Furthermore, all of our meat is from a local renowned butcher (Fords of Glaisdale) who has been operating for generations in the local area. Now you mention our teas and coffees in the room. Again, I don't know what you would expect at £250 for 3 nights bed and breakfast, with parking in such an affluent place like Whitby. You are the first customer to complain about the tea and coffee facilities. You mention our building is dated, however this would be impossible as the entrie place has been refurbished throughout 2023 and 2024 and we have had nothing but compliments and praise as to how much we have modernised the building. Worst of all NONE of these 'issues' were mentioned to any staff member or management and you have chosen the alterntative of trying to take a stab at a small business online. With only one review on your account (this one) it really does appear like you have written this out of spite, and not wrote a genuine record of events. If you had raised these issues, we would of been more than willing to go out of our way to help you as it makes no sense for either party to either have a dissatisfied customer or you leaving disapointed. Not raising your concerns ultimately causes turmoil for everyone. Regards Wheeldale Management.

The Wheeldale perches high above the sea on the cliffs of the charming harbor town of Whitby in North Yorkshire. It is clean, beautiful and the family that runs it is friendly, helpful and eager to please their guests. The bed was very comfortable. They seem to use fragrance-free cleaning products. The shower worked well with plenty of hot water. The breakfasts were delicious, with choices ranging from the "full" English breakfast to simple cereal. When I say "perches," that means that the sand is about 150 feet down! And of course, the little hotel is 150 feet up! The whole town is vertical, except for the harbor-side quay area and the ancient Abbey overlooks the whole town. I stayed 6 days in Whitby and didn't run out of things to do. There is easy access to neighboring towns by bus or train. It's a beautiful and interesting place to visit and the Wheeldale only added to the pleasure!

I have no issues with the hotel at all. This review is to highlight a couple of things people with mobility problems might need to know. There is no wheel chair access. The stairs to the rooms are very steep. There is no disabled parking. If you park on the hotel front don't expect to use your car as you are blocked in. You can park across the road and the hotel will sell you a permit for £2 . So the answer is park on the hotel front and walk everywhere which is what we did or try and get a spot over road. During the day nearly impossible evening plenty of parking.Whitby Town is very close and easy to walk too.
If you get a sea view it's a great view and we were very lucky to watch Dolphins from our room.
Our room was a bit dated but very clean and the large window gave us a great view.
One thing I think it is over priced even with the sea view its NOT a £140 a night room.

Staying at The Wheeldale hotel was one of the best experiences of staying at hotels I've have. The staff is great and friendly, the food is good and the room was excellent. The bathroom was clean and had everything we'd needed, the bed was big and had enough pillows and blankets. I would totally recommend staying here if you're visiting Whitby or Sandsend any time of the year.

Have just completed a 3 night stay here. My room (No 2) on the side of the building is billed as a small double, but is more than big enough to take the usual bedroom furniture plus 2 armchairs and still have plenty of space. The room is nicely decorated, spotlessly clean and apart from a fault that occurred with the bathroom light switch, which was repaired the same day, well maintained.
Breakfast is excellent. Plenty of choice. High quality ingredients, well cooked. Not even any oil/grease underneath the mushrooms.
All the staff I encountered were pleasant and friendly.
It’s around a 20 minute walk down the hill into town, but there’s the X4 bus back up the hill, stops less than 5 minutes walk away.
Recommended.

Arrived at the The Wheeldale at 12.30, helpful reception staff, asked if room was ok and offered help with luggage up the 2 flights of stairs.
Car park can be a pain so be careful, you can get blocked in by people leaving cars and going out for the day.
Rooms adequate, comfy with sea view.
Breakfast made to order and good quality ingredients.
Helpful waitress.
We booked 2 rooms for 4 people and close to each other.
Only downside locked out the lounge at 9pm when states 10pm
Everything else perfect.
Would stay again.
