Deliriously happy to be back yet again at our favourite hotel in Whitby for another legendary WGW…Whitby Goth Weekend.

La Rosa is a small hotel with a big reputation. Family run, by dearest Helen, Rob and doggie John who often gets called Rob and vice versa, the La Rosa Family and staff always make us feel so warmly welcomed.

If you prefer bland, corporate conformity then stay away! But if you hanker after magic, escapism and phantasmagoria, this is the place for you!

The rooms are a creative delight. All so individually curated. This place has an enchanted history and certainly lives up to it. Lewis Carroll of “Alice In Wonderland “ fame was a frequent guest.

Many of the rooms have spectacular views of the sea , Whitby Abbey and the 199 Steps. There is also a tea parlour for guests and non-guests and cakes to die for.

You can have breakfast in your room or in the parlour and you can park up on a disc just outside or nearby.

There is also an exotic back parlour for guests with a tantalising cocktail menu .

Looking forward to “Many Happy Returns” Goth Weekend or any time of the year at the exceptional La Rosa!

We stayed here for our first break away post lockdown. We felt safe and feel the necessary precautions were taken.

Now onto the nice bit, we checked in late due to travelling and were warmly welcomed.

The location of the hotel is wonderful, directly across from the Abbey above the harbour. We stayed in the Sacre Coeur room, the decor is amazing, and the view, well, nothing like laying in bed watching lightening over the Abbey (there was quite the summer storm the night we arrived). There is sufficient space and plenty of storage in the room. We absolutely loved the lack of TV, as we don't go away to watch TV in our bedroom, we go to spend time together. The bath is lovely and big, it forces you to take your time and relax as there is no shower but there is a jug for hair washing and plenty of hot water.

Another nice thing is breakfast is brought to your room in the morning (at a time of your choice, earliest is 8.30am which again makes you relax a little and have a lie in).

The beds are comfortable, plenty of pillows.

If you want a boutique hotel, with a great location, great views, and friendly staff this is the place.

We shall definitely be returning, hopefully work our way through all 11 rooms.

I just want to say what an amazing experience I had staying at La Rosa on their first day open after Lockdown. I felt extremely safe and comfortable for my entire stay. On entry, there is clear information to help with social distancing and keep everyone safe. The room was spotlessly clean.
Some small changes were highlighted when I arrived - room are not cleaned every day (if you stay for more than one night) and breakfast is not served in a picnic hamper. The rooms are the cleaned carefully when you check out.
If you need anything through your stay you just need to ask.
The hosts are just SO lovely and welcoming and made me feel comfortable. John is a particular highlight for me - please give him a belly rub from me!!!

THANK YOU for my wonderful stay. I will see you again!

Stayed in the salon room at la Rosa. Very quirky, but all the artefacts were very very dusty! The white bedlinen was discoloured and the bed was so high I had to use a chair to get in. Amazed that there was no toiletries to do use as it stated in the description that there was designer toiletries in bathroom. We had to go out to buy shampoo etc, because I didn’t take my own as every hotel I’ve visited has always supplied such items. Loved the style of this hotel but it needs a fresh eye to see all the dust and faults. Would not visit again.

Pros:
*The staff are friendly
*The location is great
* £4 for (up to 4 days parking) with a permit (if you can find a space within the permit zones that is)
*The continental breakfast is good (if you're expecting a fry up then this is not the place for you)

Cons:
*We stayed in the caravan room, and overall we didn't find the room very clean (there were lots of trinkets dotted about that were covered in dust) we knew upon booking that the room was on the small side, but they really need to move the birdcage in it. I lost count of how many times me and my partner banged our heads. The curtains (if you can call them that) were full of holes so they let the light in pretty early on.

*The walls are super thin. You can hear EVERYTHING that's going on around you. So bring ear plugs if you're sensitive to noise like me. I was very surprised to find that the doors too the rooms don't have a slow close mechanism on them. They're heavy old doors too. So they slam pretty hard when they shut. Once again, this might not bother some people.

*We also tried the cocktails in their library. We didn't think they were that great, but the staff are so lovely that we felt bad about saying anything.

If you're after a different experience than this is hotel is definitely worth a visit. Sadly we won't be returning, but don't let our negatives put you off.

We booked very much last minute to this very quirky hotel in Whitby. I understand it is extremely popular with the Goths and I can see why. The decor is very dark and it is full of unusual pictures and stuff. None of the rooms have TV, and our room only had a bath, no shower also no wardrobe or drawers. Breakfast was served in the room in a hamper which was different, but you got plenty: cereals, coffee, croissants, currant bread, orange juice, yogurts and hard boiled eggs(!). It was certainly a different experience, if I’m honest I wouldn’t book it again but that said if you you’re the sort of person who likes quirky and you knit your own yogurt, then this is the place for you.

As others have said, this is definitely quirky, so if you're expecting a regular room with standard facilities then it's not for you.
Having said that, our room (La Rosa) was clean and very comfortable. Despite all the knick-knacks, rugs etc around the room, there wasn't any dust in evidence. We had a lovely sea view and the room was spacious. However if you're thinking of unpacking your cases, there is no drawer space and just a large coat rack for hanging!
The weather was cold and the heating a little underpowered except in the bathroom which was boiling! There was bags of hot water but our room only had a bath, no shower or shower attachment. I don't know if all the rooms are the same, but if you struggle with baths then you need to enquire.
There was kettle/tea/coffee etc in the room and fresh milk is provided. However although they offer a packed breakfast in your room (as a sort of novelty I think,) you can book to have it in the dining room which I would recommend as I think eating it on your bed might be difficult!
Continental breakfast was delicious with fresh pastries, warm rolls and spreads, yoghurts, fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs and cheese. Orange juice, tea and coffee. All served with a smile.
Stay here for a different experience!

We’ve stayed at the La Rosa hotel and campsite several times. This time we’d booked three nights in Little Red and were kindly upgraded to the Stoker and the beautiful sea view.

I’ve never stayed anywhere where I’ve felt so welcomed by the staff to the extent that they’ve shown a genuine interest in our stay and what we’re going to do. It really does come across how much they enjoy doing what they’re doing and how much pride they take in it. It puts a spring in your step.

The Stoker room gives you a lovely head on view straight across the harbour to the Abbey. The room, like all the others in the hotel is themed and full of nice little gothic trinkets. I can’t figure out whether bits and bobs have just been chucked around higgledy-piggledy or placed around meticulously but the room looks great either way. The bed is amazing, it’s like sleeping on a cloud. Lovely reading the notes of previous guests left behind too. We’ll be back.

Oh where do I start?
This is my dream hotel, unique decor and furniture, baths in most rooms, fabulous views, lovely staff . And No TV! Yay! Who goes to Whitby to watch TV in their hotel room?
If you want practical, boring, run of the mill don't stay here.
If you want kooky, eclectic, atmospheric stay here.
Our sheets and towels where whiter than white, fresh and beautiful, the breakfast picnic left at our door was yummy and they personalised it for us. The staff are as kooky as the hotel and so lovely.
We had our wedding night here in La Rosa room with views across to the Abbey, it was perfect.

This was our second visit to La Rosa and we could not fault our experience from start to finish. We arrived very early to make the most of our day and were allowed to check in early which was much appreciated. The Sacre Coeur Room has one of the best views in Whitby and was of course extremely quirky, clean and very comfortable!
The breakfast hamper was delicious and to enjoy it in our room with the view was wonderful. The very generous midday check out time allowed us to have a nice morning stroll on the beach before vacating and we’re planning our next stay at La Rosa already!
Many thanks!

Hello Richard Swallow Barn has a basic kitchen area which has a camping gas stove and kettle. There is a small fridge and lots of pots, pans, plates, glasses etc for guests to use. There is an outdoor fire area round the back with chiminea and you are welcome to bring a dispisable BBQ if you wish. If you have any other questions please ask. Regards Helen

Hello, is there parking with the hotel
Answer from La Rosa
Whitby, United Kingdom2 contributions
Hello We have parking directly outside the hotel and all along the West Cliffe. Pay and display areas are free of charge until 1 March 2016. Guests who stay at the hotel can park in 'disc zones' , however they need to get a scratchcard from the hotel, free of charge, to display in the vehicle. They are valid for 4 days. If I can be of any further help, just let me know. Helen
