The Penny Hedge Lodge offers a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere that many guests appreciate, although there is a sentiment that the rooms and amenities could benefit from some refreshing. Guests generally regard the lodge as clean, with a particularly convenient location near Whitby and the perk of complimentary parking. While the service is often praised for its friendliness, some visitors have encountered less than satisfactory interactions with staff. Opinions on value are divided; some find it reasonable, while others question the cost-quality balance.

Clean, welcoming and comfortable hotel at a very reasonable price. We wanted somewhere with parking from where we could walk into Whitby and in view of the price and location, we were expecting something very functional. However the room and bathroom were better than we expected (similar to a Premier Inn) with some nice touches e.g. good quality coffee bags. The walk to Whitby took 15 or 20 minutes (uphill on the way back) and although the actual location of the hotel isn't in a pretty area, it was very quiet and parking was easy and free. We would definitely return there. Finally the staff we spoke to were lovely. We arrived at 12 and the member of staff changed rooms around so that we could have a room earlier than the 3pm check in. All in all - a great stay!

Fabulous place to stay when visiting Whitby we never stay anywhere else. Parking on site which is an added bonus , the hotel and restaurant are both spotless along with the most amazing staff who are a credit to the hotel . Meals are always fresh and tasty and the most important thing is the food is always hot . It's only about 15_20 minutes walk into the centre of Whitby but you can always catch the bus . Thanks again see you soon .

We booked here for our first holiday with our nearly 1 year old. We wanted to stay at a premier inn but there wasn’t one near Whitby, however Penny Hedge is pretty much premier inn without the purple. The facilities, cleanliness are all the same. The staff are amazing and very accommodating. Check in was easy and stress free, all the food is good value for money. We often find eating out with a baby difficult as most places don’t accommodate babies eating solids - here is the exception, they were brilliant.

If you want to split hairs, it was a shame that the rooms have Pg tips instead of Yorkshire tea - that is literally the only negative 😂. Also if you book directly with them you get 20% off your food - I didn’t realise this until it was too late to cancel with booking.com and rebook with the hotel directly.

It is a 20minute walk to Whitby beach or there is a bus every 30mins almost door to door. There is also a Sainsburys and Aldi next door which was quite helpful. Parking is free and quite secure.

We would happily stay here again.

Very basic accommodation in need of an update and refresh It appeared to be chronically under staffed We arrived in pouring rain and had to wait for someone to be found to book us in .The room card we were given then didn't work so we had to queue again at the bar for help

We had dinner as it was convenient in awful weather and both nights the food was hot and tasty but let down by poor service the first night and the wrong wine on the second There was no apology for the wine in fact the bar man advised that I was incorrect until the manager stepped in and confirmed
that it was not what had been ordered Although we had been given a card advertising a 20% discount on our meal when we arrived we were advised you could only get this if you booked your stay direct Towels and room were not refreshed unless you requested it and as there were very few staff about so we didn't bother

Overall disappointing but does have the potential to be better if there was a good management team in place

Hi Karen, im sorry to hear that you have not had a great experience with us, i will look into the discount for the food if you have booked a room as im not sure what the policy of this is at the moment. We are currently overgoing a change of management and new staff training which should help run things more smoothly

We have been staying here every year (sometimes multiple times) for the last five years, always very happy until this year.
Rooms are in need of a good refresh, our door didn’t automatically shut and lock it had to be slammed manually to get it to close (not easy when you are disabled) the TV didn’t work, the fan in bathroom didn’t work, window lock was dodgy and overall badly in need of redecoration. Also the staff at check in weren’t very informative or friendly, then when we ate in the restaurant for the “Steak night” the food was more or less inedible with the steak reduced to charcoal and at 18.75 a head it definitely wasn’t a “special”. The lacklustre bordering on rude waiter didn’t help either. What a shame after we have extolled the wonderful stays we have had to many other people. I’m afraid that will be the last time we stay.

Firstly I was charged £128 per night for room only which did not include breakfast; this was charged separately taking the cost up to £145 per night.

The accommodation is almost identical to a Travelodge or Premier in which are much cheaper. There is no where to put clothes or your cases off the floor. There was only one chair in a double room and very little hanging space.

This facility is advertised as a hotel, which it very is not. This should be advertised as a Travelodge with travelodge prices. The location is also a few miles outside Whitby.

The staff and hotel food I could not fault. Staff were very friendly and helpful to us.

My recommendation would be to look in Whitby as the Royal hotel with panoramic views was only £148 per night with breakfast included. Other accommodation started at £65 per night. The Penny Lodge backs onto a busy main road so your views are of a hedge or a car park. Not quite what I expected for the money. Overall very disappointed and certainly would not recommend in high season for value for money.

Hi claire767676, Thanks for taking the time to review us, We really appreciate your feedback. We're sorry to hear that you didn't feel we offered good value for money. What we aim to offer is comfortable rooms at a reasonable price. as with many other hotel brands the room rate is just that, with breakfast being an optional extra. we'll be sure to pass along your comments around price and room facilities to our HQ team for review. Thank you for highlighting the team and the meals, we do work very hard to maintain high standards and a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. We do hope you'll consider us in the future. Booked last minute through hotels.com due to the fact we had a voucher so thought was a good deal turned out to be anything but. Arrived at reception to be told they were having problems with payments from Expedia and ensured that we had paid in full. Had to book an accessible room due to availability but weren't too bothered with it. Got into room everything ok and went for a shower in wet room bathroom not realising there was no ventilation or heating whatsoever which made every part of it wet through including the floor for the entire 2 night duration of our stay. Had a drink in the bar Friday night stood at the bar for 5 minutes while the ignorant barman continued to put glasses away so went bact to room. Tried again Saturday afternoon for a drink and used the app only to wait 15 minutes for drinks to arrive. Checked out Sunday morning at 8 after being woke up at 5.50 by people letting their child run about upstairs, when we did check out i asked in the bar if there was any further charges for peace of mind and was reassured there wasn't so headed home. When i got home found there was a pending transaction on my account which the hotel had taken themselves due to their Expedia payment problems so assumed it would be ok to pay twice for an overrated toom. Tried emailing the hotel but no response hence my review on their badly run hotel.

We have visited Penny Hedge several times over the years and always found to be reasonable value. Our experience this time however was a little disappointing. The rooms were clean but basic; akin to a premier standard. We paid 135.00 per night through Hotels.com. Booking direct would have cost 150.00. No breakfast included in either case. There are certainly cheaper and better B&B alternatives available; this place has now priced itself out of the market for us. On a cleanliness note; the large glass dividing screen in the breakfast area was absolutely filthy, which was rather off putting and breakfast.

Dear Trickytreederbyshire Thanks for taking the time to review us, we really appreciate your feedback. We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoyed your time with us. We try to benchmark ourselves in line with out national competitors. As a larger brand all of our pricing is decided centrally. In line with many of our competitors our room rates and for the room and breakfast is an optional extra. We'll take on board your comments around the restaurant cleanliness and work to improve our standards. We hope you'll reconsider us in the future. The real shame about this hotel, is the total waste of fantastic staff. The room whilst clean (and to be fair the bed is comfortable) is worse than basic and only good for a single nights stay, as there is no where to put any clothes, so you have to live out of your case, that can only be stored on the floor.

There was 1 large towel and 1 small towel in the bathroom (the room was booked for 2 people,) and the fan in the bathroom was laboured and chunky.

Where this hotel really looses out however is the food. Chips are like dried cardboard (very cheap frozen ) and most (battered cod, ok, but that was all) of the food we had over 2 meals was bland and tasteless.

Marstons may claim that this is a budget hotel, and at £90 per night it I suppose it could be deemed so, however it really is not worth that amount. I recommend you only stay here as a last resort, for one night, and eat somewhere else.

Hi, You won't be dissappointed with the Penny Hedge. Great place to stay - large car park, pleasant staff, great food. Can't comment on size of family rooms, best to ring and ask - 01947661548. My only recollection was in our standard room there was minimal hanging space and no shelf space - kept most of our stuff in cases on the floor for a week ! Apart from that I would still give it 9.5/10 - would return in an instant. Hope this helps.
