It is a tale of two halves... The hotel part is very similar to the old-school Premier Inns... clean, comfortable and reasonable by Whitby standards. The roadside rooms are a little noisier, but you have air-con if you shut the window. Having stayed in a number of local hotels and guest houses over the years this is probably one of the best... a hotel in Whitby with a car park is a plus... but clean and comfortable too... Go for it... Just maybe eat elsewhere! I did say a tale of two halves... We chose to eat here one night to avoid the trek into town... with friends joining us we were a group of six... and all of us were disappointed. Prawn cocktails in a small beer glass... This is WHITBY... sea-food should be exceptional... these starters were dreadful. Whilst a number of items were off the menu... here's a run down from our selection... Sirloin steak... over-cooked, tough Ribeye steak... see Sirloin... but add on extra chewyness! Half a chicken... like something off Antiques Roadshow... so over-cooked! But I will credit the Thai coleslaw. Cheesy chips... actually good! Childrens chicken dippers... good And then the drinks... whatever we ordered came in "bits"... one drink here... then another... the premium price gin cocktails... no garnish.. run out... so you end up with just an over-priced un-inspiring drink in a huge glass... Then the "coke exchange"... a moment to savour... Vodka and Diet Coke? Well, I ordered an ordinary coke... Well this is a diet one one... will that be ok... But I ordered an ordinary coke... Well actually this is Pepsi Max... we don't sell Coke... If you asked for Coke you would have got Pepsi... I refer you to the first line of our exchange above! So there you have it... Hotel - Good... Restaurant - Bad... Sainsbury is next door... grab a picnic!

This was our 3rd stay at The Penny Hedge and again the staff were brilliant, especially Craig and Jono. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is very good with prime ingredients. Our room was clean and comfortable. We were a party of 4 couples, all family and had a brilliant time. Thanks Penny Hedge, we will be back!!!

Our 2nd visit here and every bit as good as the 1st! Big clean room and bathroom, comfy king size bed. Good choice and tasty breakfast. Quiet despite being on main road. 2 tips...... walk into whitby approx 20mins but definitely pay £6 for a taxi back! And book early to get a great price!

I must say the staff were amazing, but the hotel has seen better days. For some reason we were given an accessible room which was the pits! Nowhere to hang anything, no drawers etc. Wi-Fi was terrible and labelled ' unsafe' on my tablet. Noisey right on top of the A171 trunk road. Temperature in room unadjustable either very hot or too cold!

On a recent family holiday in Whitby we visited this Restaurant on our last evening. It had been recommended to us, and it certainly lived up to expectations. We were a party of four and were delighted with the decor and with all the safety measures taken in these ‘Covid days’. The Menu provided a good selection. Our choices ranged from Fish and chips, chicken with seasonal vegetables, to Burgers and chips. Everything was cooked to perfection. Portions were good and great value for the price. Above all, the Service was excellent. The young woman who looked after us was friendly and welcoming, efficient, very personable, and highly professional. A huge asset to the company who contributed to the enjoyment of the evening.
