We stopped off at this pub for a drink whilst visiting York. The staff were very friendly, the bar area was not that big but we managed to get a table. People are also eating in there but I don’t know what the food was like. We got served quickly, a little pricey but we expected that. Very nice decor with a lot of character.

What a fabulous little hotel! All of the staff were so friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms were beautifully decorated, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. We did have a problem with our heating, but as soon as we reported it, someone came and fixed it. Breakfast was delicious and we were served by a really cheerful lady and lovely young man. We had a vegan cooked breakfast, which was delicious. The bar and secret garden were also great. The only downside was the street noise at night, although York was extremely busy with the Christmas markets, so I think there would have been noise in any of the city centre hotels.

Let's start with the positives. Great location, Good breakfast. Unfortunately the negatives outweighed the positives. Started in room 6 Radiator not working in bathroom 😑 complained and was issued with a portable heater with extension lead but unfortunately no socket near enough to plug it in so complained again and was moved to room 3. Same problem with Radiators so again issued with portable heater and extension lead, but reached this time. Overall a tatty room,no useable space to put things so most stuff ended up on the floor. Quilt to small for the bed. Bathroom shower head broken and taps moved when you turned them on and off. We would have left on day one if we hadn't have paid up front for a superior room. Management surely realize that putting a 250v portable heater with extension lead in a bathroom is not good never mind the trip hazzard trailing leads are. Relayed all this on checkout so they waved the breakfast fee. Would we stay here again ...definitely not. Love York and plenty of better places to stay next time.

Overall our meal here was good. My Burger was excellent but the plaice dish was very watery and not much of it. Friendly staff and excellent atmosphere. Nice drinks afterwards in the separate bar area. Would definitely return when visiting

Starting off with the positives: The Fat Badger is a gorgeous small hotel situated in the heart of York, a stone’s throw from the Minster. The room was small, but aesthetically pleasing. We included breakfast in our stay, which was excellent and staff was immensely kind. Irrelevant to our stay was the fact that we had to exercise our legs and calves as we were staying on the top floor, which was a surprise to be sure, but a funny one so no complaints there. As for the (only) negative, which is the reason we detracted 2 points off the rating: Our room, while aesthetically gorgeous, had a broken radiator. This resulted in a very cold room upon arrival, and turning the knob had no effect. I spoke to management regarding this and when we were out to explore the city, tried to resolve it. Upon return, he told us he did his best, but placed an electric heater in the room just in case. Sure enough, the heating had been fixed. But we went from one extreme to another, turning the room into an inferno and the knob now completely off the radiator (leaving us no way to turn it off). Opening a window had no effect and even using the provided fan had no use. This resulted in a poor night of sleep. The next day this was mentioned to staff, and they apologised and stated it would be resolved. I even suggested just turning the radiator off again and we would use the electric heater. But unfortunately no action was taken, giving us a second night in what was effectively a sauna. So while our stay in York at the Badger was great, due to this big negative, I would say it was not worth the price that we paid. This should not stop people from going there, but it should be taken into consideration by management in the future.

The hotel itself is very quirky and the staff are great. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean, however, our room (room 5) was in poor condition. Repairs are needed in multiple places, e.g poor condition of the floor, new sealant being needed around the shower, however by far the biggest issue is the window. The frame itself is rotten, and there are visible gaps to the outside, due to this, as this room is on a main road the noise from outside is unbelievable. I understand there is always going to be some road noise because of the central location, and the hotel also being a pub so receiving keg deliveries etc, however this problem is made so much worse by the poor condition of the window, to the point where it sounds as if the window is wide open even when it is locked shut. Much better upkeep of the rooms is needed for the amount charged per night.

Unusual place lots of different rooms bit like a rabbit warren quirky and creaky but in a nice way ! Lovely breakfast served in beautiful room lovely friendly staff! We stayed in The Attic with 2 sets of stairs to climb one set extremely steep ! Lovely room bed a bit of a hike to get into lol with creaky steel headboard ! Bit noisy because right outside is a beer garden but wasn’t a problem at night , mind you it did rain. Great central location !

Absolutely loved it here! What a fantastic location, so close to everything! Lovely welcome to the hotel. Bags were taken to our room whilst we were out and about. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Our room was lovely with all the charm of an old hotel, creaky floor boards and all! Obviously because of the age of the building the room and bathroom has a few quirks..the shower is a little tight and there aren't many plug sockets but nothing that spoils the stay at all. The bed was very comfy and everything was very clean. It was a very cosy and charming room with a view over the city wall and the Secret Garden. Oh my the Secret Garden..what a lovely little place to have a drink to start our evening. Fairy lights and heaters make it almost magical out there of an evening. The cabin looked fab too ready for Christmas. We travelled to this hotel for a mum and daughter trip for my daughters 18th birthday and I would like to thank the hotel for making it a very memorable trip. I will definitely be returning!
