My mum and I stayed here for 6 nights during a visit to York. It was my birthday and on arrival we both got a complimentary drink and there as a lovely little card for me left in the room as well. Pros We stayed in an executive room on the fifth floor which was very spacious. The bathroom was gorgeous with double sinks, a bathtub, a separate double shower and a separate loo. The room was cleaned everyday to a high standard and there was turndown service each evening from the lovey cleaning staff who were always cheerful and eager to help. All the staff we encountered from the doormen, reception and cleaners were friendly and welcoming. The hotel is well located and within easy walking distance from both York station and the town centre and other attractions. We did not get a chance to try the spa but access was included with the exec room. Cons We had room service on two occasions (out of necessity) and the food was not great. The in room dining menu was very limited and the food was warm rather than hot (the hotel should invest in food cloches/covers). The tray charge is also quite high (£10) when compared to other five star hotels I’ve stayed in which charge £5 at most. Luckily there are plenty of really good restaurants nearby and you can order in to the hotel as well. There was also an issue with an incorrect charge on the bill for parking but this was resolved very quickly by helpful Jack in reception. Overall a good visit and would be happy to stay here again.…
Lovely executive twin. We were able to check in really early as the room was available. Check in was first class and Jack made us feel really welcome and special. We dined in the Rise restaurant in the evening. First class food and service. Breakfast was really tasty. All the staff we encountered were helpful, friendly and professional…
This achingly trendy hotel is less than 10 years old & all the public rooms are beautifully designed. Sadly, our Heritage Suite wasn't quite on a par with the show rooms downstairs. The design was certainly modern, but although our corner room was large, with vast windows, it seemed oddly empty, with the bed (complete with disintegrating decorative cushions), dressing/tea & coffee-making table & TV/fridge at one end & a small 3-piece suite & coffee table in splendid isolation several yards away. Behind the settee & armchairs was a large amount of unused space with an assortment of unused sockets in the corner walls. The relative lack of storage space for the possessions of a couple staying for 3 nights (a medium depth drawer each, a narrow drawer each, a suit-depth enclosed wardrobe, a full-length open hanging space shared with the ironing board & a bedside table each) made us long for an extra piece of furniture in that unused corner - a large chest of drawers, perhaps, or a full-sized wardrobe. I can't recall the last time we were forced to use our luggage as extra storage when staying in a suite in a decent hotel! According to the Grand's website, Heritage Suite bathrooms contain "his & hers sinks, single & double walk-in showers, indulgent bathtubs..." Not this one, I'm afraid. We shared a single sink, the bath appeared fairly basic & you had to climb into the bath in order to have a shower. The sink taps were certainly state of the art, though, working on the shower system of one tap for adjusting the water temperature & the other tap controlling the amount of water. Unfortunately, these taps had fairly stubby levers, were very stiff to use & well-nigh impossible for anyone with arthritic hands to operate. Prior to our arrival, we had requested a quiet room, fresh milk in the mini-fridge & an electric fan. The room was at the corner of the original building, which sits next to a major roundabout, around which York's many bendy buses appear to operate noisily throughout the night. So not at all quiet, then. When we opened the tiny plastic bottle of fresh milk in our fridge the following morning, we discovered it was already going off. So, not very fresh after all. As for the electric fan, it was nowhere to be seen on our arrival. Everyone we asked promised to "chase it up with Housekeeping" but it took a lot of polite nagging before, 5 hours later, a Dyson Hot/Cold fan was delivered. No instructions or remote control, just a fan which was pre-set to Hot. Naturally we requested the instruction book, charmingly staff promised to "chase it up with Housekeeping" & inevitably nothing materialised during the 3 days of our stay. So, no cool fan, then. All the staff we encountered were smiling & cheerful, particularly the magnificent doormen (whose valet parking & luggage delivery services were impeccably efficient), the serving staff in the Bar, the White Rose lounge & the Rise restaurant & the delightful lady who cleaned our suite daily. An electrician arrived to deal with a couple of minor technical glitches in our room within minutes of our call for help (it seems that in order for the bedside wall sockets to work properly, the plugs had to be pulled partly out of the sockets!) & fresh jugs of milk for our fridge were always delivered swiftly. The food was delicious & beautifully presented during our dinners in the Rise restaurant, while breakfast, whether hot or cold, was of similar high quality. We noted that a Service Charge was added for anything spent in the restaurant & made our usual enquiry at Reception about leaving a large tip to be distributed around the other hotel staff. The receptionist must have been new because she had absolutely no idea what happened to cash tips left by residents. In the end we spoke to the duty manager, who assured us that any cash we left would be added to a kitty & distributed periodically amongst the hotel staff. To summarise, our Heritage Suite had more than enough space for a larger bed, a larger 3-piece suite, a larger coffee table & at least a large chest of drawers. Not only was the storage space minimal, the surface space wasn't particularly generous either. A pity, because it could have been a spectacular room - apart from the all-night traffic noise.…
We stayed here 5 years ago and found the service exquisite then and again the same this time. Nothing is a bother for the staff, from the doorman to the room service persons. We did not eat there this time so I cannot comment on the food. The rooms were VERY comfortable, although not as palatial as last time, as we stayed in the new extension this time. That is not to say it lessened the experience any as the feel of the grandeur was still there. Have no issues in recommending this hotel to everyone. Not cheap but for what you pay the level of service really is there.…
An amazing hotel with first class service from the beginning. All the staff were fantastic but Jack who checked us in is a credit to the hotel, he was very professional, attentive and thoughtful which started our visit off perfectly. Thank you.
