Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The best night of my life I was walking past the hotel on the way into town while on a trip in York, I was intrigued by the welcoming lights and domes outside. I was welcomed by a lovely man called Wayne, he suggested some lovely food and told us some good advice. I decided on a Freshly cooked pizza made right beside the dome. The pizza was a delight and cant even get started on the beautiful, warm brownie. The server Jamie ( i believed his name was) was a Kind waiter. He was very attentive to each and every person in the domes as i saw. My wife could tell he is very good at his occupancy. However, i would have wished for a longer period of time as a result of our excellent experience. WILL BE VISITING AGAIN!

Hotel's Favourite
Not a person to ever write a review but have walked past the hotel many times and seen the igloos outside, me and my partner Kyle thought we’d pop in just to enquire about them. Ian was on the reception desk and was the most welcoming individual, we have never even stayed overnight in this hotel and we are now going to be booking to on our next visit to York, we travel from Liverpool often to York and because of Ian we will be back to the Churchill most definitely, he was so knowledgeable about the place and you could tell he loves his job letting us take a look around and talking us through all the offerings See you soon Ian

The hotel is ideally situated within 10 minutes walk from the minster. The reception staff were very welcoming and helpful. The room was comfortable and plenty of space for 4 female friends and their luggage 😜. The beds were very comfortable. The facilities in the room were also very good. We would definitely recommend and will forward to returning and making use of the pods in the garden.

Stayed as a couple for my birthday.. upgraded our room to superior with a bath.. lovely room, tea & coffee facilities in room but no fridge. Breakfast was lovely, we also had an evening meal which was also very good. All the staff were very friendly but Wayne who hosted the bar & outdoor area was so lovely.. super friendly and very helpful. Wayne is the jewel in the crown in the hotel. Only minor criticism is you have to request if you want your room serviced, we didn’t realise this so missed a service the first day. The hotel is well located 10-15 min walk from town, the Minster, and the station. Taxi into town very easy and not expensive if you don’t want walk. We would definitely stay again.

Fabulous hotel. The hotel room was lovely the bed was really comfy and the bathroom was nice too. Nothing felt cramped. We stayed for a meal and the pizzas were great too. The check in staff were polite and gave us help with directions to where we wanted to go.

Cannot fault this hotel at all from checking in with the man on reception to checking out. The staff are also friendly and helpful. The bedrooms are decorated to a good standard. Didn’t get to eat sadly but will happily return to book into the dining room. Thank you Churchill staff.

The room was fine, nothing fantastic or special, very dark and not well lit. But this was not impactful on our stay we are not particularly concerned as long as it’s clean, although I did expect more for the price. Having initially enjoyed our stay here, with the friendly night time team.. Wayne, Jamie the bar staff and evening reception team. As we were checking out there was a couple also checking out and Ian was informing them their car could remain in the £15 a day car park until 2pm as the next check in guest get “aggy “ if they can’t park…. Upon check out our friends rightly challenged their bill, and this was not met with great service or for that matter a professional attitude by Ian. Who again said “ you get aggy with me I get aggy with you”?! Ian became aggressive and condescending telling our friends to listen with their ears whilst tugging at his ears! Once the bill was finally settled and our friends came out to the car park Ian followed them out and stood watching us, our friend asked him if he has a problem to which he replied “ im checking the property is safe”?! Ian then mocked my friend mimicking him?? This is not good service or good manners. Ian I would challenge if you are working within the correct sector as I believe your personality does not lend itself to working customer faced. I do believe you are paid to listen, to be polite and to manage expectations not challenge and aggravate. Your co worker apologised for you more than once. And the fact that you followed us out and your abrasive manner leads me to believe you are extremely confrontational and therefore bad for business. We will never return obviously and we cannot recommend this hotel it is not in any way exceptional as customers you are not valued and sadly in some areas you are over paying for mediocre services. There are far better hotels in York to choose from as we visit this city a couple of times a year we know this from experience. So please consider other options.

Like others who have given less than great reviews I wish I’d looked at Trip Advisor a bit closer before I booked this hotel. I had a ‘dining for 2 experience’ voucher to use and this hotel restaurant was an option so I thought we’d make a night of it by booking a stay at the hotel too. I chose a luxury double room as it was husband’s birthday but I wish I hadn’t bothered. The room was really quite shabby - paint peeling off the door frames, paint on walls in bedroom scuffed and marked in places, furniture quite grubby and battered in places. The en suite bathroom was also poor - paint literally peeling off the wall in multiple places, odd rough wooden boxing in of pipes which looked very basic, and shower controls faulty - hard to get a good temperature. The food was actually really good and the waiter and bar service was great so I would recommend the restaurant. This hotel seems tired and in need of a refurb. The corridors in the section we were in were painted black so really quite oppressive. Our room was definitely not luxurious and definitely not worth the money. When we commented to the receptionist when we checked out she just said “yes it’s going to be decorated” but no offer of a reduction or an apology. This really isn’t good enough- if you know it needs decorating don’t charge such a high price! Won’t be returning sadly- there will be better places you can spend your money.

An easy walk into the city centre of York, with it's own car park is definitely a win, though it is chargeable at £15 per night which seems a tad cheeky when you're already paying a fair whack for your room. The front of house reception staff were not particularly welcoming nor friendly. No smiles or "good morning" or "have a nice day" at any of our interactions. The small double room really was small, which their website does make clear. It was fine for us, but if you're staying more than a night or two you'll probably want a larger room. Ensuite was clean and fine. The breakfast choice was from a typical breakfast menu and was tasty, they brought out extra toast for us which was nice, one improvement on breakfast= they could up their coffee game. Breakfast staff were very friendly, cheerful and couldn't do more for us. More of this please! Overall I'd recommend but not with the enthusiasm I'd read about in other reviews on here.

We booked with a buy a gift voucher for a 3 course dinner. A small but nice menu. The service was efficient and friendly. The decor was unusual with amazing light fittings. Food was lovely. Overall a really pleasant experience and worth doing.
