Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just got back from a wonderful 2 night stay at the Bishop And The Bison a truly unique B&B. Each room and the communal areas are all individual with lovely touches everywhere you look. The bed, pillows and duvet where so comfortable and definitely the best I have come across in a B&B. I'm Coeliac and Jonathan couldn't have been more accommodating with my breakfast which was wonderful and such a treat for me to have such a choice. You get such a lovely welcome from Jonathan the minute you get there and help with anything you may want to know or need. I would definitely recommend a stay here and hopefully in the future I will be back.

It has been a long time since my wife and I have stayed in a B&B, but on a recent three-night trip to York thought that we would give it a try given the number of positive reviews on Tripadvisor. The best thing about the Bishop and the Bison is the service from the owners. Jonathan was nothing less than fantastic. I'd contacted him before our visit seeking recommendations for restaurants which we could dine at of an evening. He sent me a short list with comments and identified their favourites. Given it was in the run up to Christmas I'd thought it prudent to book these and I'm glad we did so. His recommendations didn't disappoint. On the day we were due to arrive, he contacted me regarding our arrival time so that he could greet us at the Boutique Hotel. As it happened we parked at the hotel and met Jonathan at his shop in the centre of York and were made to feel so welcome. Our bedroom and ensuite were spotlessly clean, the only downside being that there was no heat in the ensuite and with it being December was a little chilly in there, but that really is it. Breakfasts are fantastic with plenty of choice from full English Breakfasts, Bacon and/or Egg sandwiches, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, boiled eggs, poached eggs (sorry about the pan) and I guess pretty much anything if you let Jonathan or Andrew know. The Boutique Hotel is very individually and uniquely designed and has won coveted tourism awards deservedly so. Importantly it's handy for York City Centre. There are two bus stops about a 2-3 minute walk from the hotel, and you can walk from the hotel along the main road to the Minster in about 20-25 minutes (the bus takes about 10-15 minutes). The hotel is unique, but what makes this standout from the rest is the fantastic welcome and service from the hotel's owners. Thank you.

Absolutely loved our 2 night stay at The Bishop and The Bison - fabulous decor and theming, beautiful house, amazing artwork and top class service from Jonathan. Wonderful breakfast too! Ideally located for a walk into the centre. This truly is a must do stay if you're planning a trip to York. We will certainly stay again - and next time we plan to try one or two of the Gins listed in their Ginventory in the Presidents Lounge. We were first attracted to this hotel by the lighting at night when we walked past it and noticed the Bison sculpture glowing in the upper front window - turns out you can meet the Bison in the Presidents Lounge!

Probably the most charming B&B I have EVER stayed in! You can see love and care in every single corner of this house! Jonathan was such a amazing host, and an amazing cook too! A little reference... do you know how Ariel from The Little Mermaid gets swallowed by the mattress the first time she laid down on a bed? That was literally me on the 2 nights I stayed here! Really, the bed was SO comfortable that it made consider buy a new mattress when I got back home. Thank you again for such a lovely stay! <3

Wonderful overnight break here on our drive from London to Edinburgh. Stylish B&B, room was comfy and clean; breakfast choice was fantastic; parking was a huge bonus (if you book direct) and we could walk into the City centre. Jonathan and Anthony are perfect hosts! Nothing was too much trouble from taxis (it was raining) to shops, local haunts to sightseeing tips. Highly recommended.

Greeted with a warm welcome by Anthony who gave us a map and some information about the mile walk from The Bishop and The Bison into York. We stayed for two nights, the beds and pillows are top quality and so comfortable. Lovely touch with Noble Isle toiletries in the en-suite. We had a wonderful stay and one of the highlights was the delicious breakfast cooked by Jonathan with local produce. The pork and leek sausage are the best we have tasted. We had a relaxing gin and tonic in The Presidents Lounge one evening. The location is also perfect for getting into York. Definitely a 10 out of 10.

Very original and quirky. Everywhere was spotless and the hosts extremely friendly and helpful. Lovely breakfast as well. It is close to the centre of York but away from the hub bub. Would highly reccomend.

Charming and well appointed accommodation situated perfectly just a short walk to EVERYTHING amazing to see and do in York. Stroll the neighborhood or opt for a river walk into the city. I cannot say enough about the lovely hosts Jonathan and Anthony. Creative and fun with a love for their city and it's history. They will expertly guide you to the "local" flavors and fun adventures throughout the city. Anthony is extremely creative and has written a historical reference guide and map for your stay. The rooms are beautifully decorated with curated and unique art and mid-century fashion. Just ask your hosts the stories behind the name of the Inn, and wonderful tales of how and where various art and furniture was acquired. Each has a unique story you don't want to miss. I stayed in the Bison room, just off the main entrance. The room was perfectly fashioned and outfitted for relaxing (very quiet), sleeping in the comfortable King double bed, tea/coffee/espresso bar, working at the desk, watching a bit of TV and the shower/en suite had quality linens and essential toiletries. Breakfast was absolutely first class and cooked to perfection by order! There are lots of options to choose from on the menu from a full English to simple oats or fruit. The President's lounge upstairs is a hidden gem, so be sure to have a tea or a gin in the evening before retiring. It is quite clear that much love and care was taken with each and every detail, unique piece of art, thoughtful touches, and high-end comfort toiletries. No details were missed here! The personal interactions with the owners was delightful and they are very respectful of your privacy and take great pride in seeing to your needs. I highly recommend a stay here. You will arrive as a guest, and leave as a friend. Many thanks to Jonathan and Anthony for a lovely stay. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
