Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Booked this pub/hotel on a whim. We married in York last year and wanted to return for a few days for our anniversary. This hotel is ideal - very central, everything is walkable and no more than 10 minutes away. The cathedral is literally a couple of minutes away. The free parking is an absolute godsend as York is notoriously difficult to park, and with me being pregnant, it was ideal having the car close by and not having to walk distances with suitcases. The manager checked us in and was friendly and really helpful. We had a drink in the pub and there is a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. We stayed in the Bootham Room for 2 nights, a lovely spacious room, with high ceilings and big windows opening out on to a street view of the busy road. We had been left a lovely note and some chocolates which was so unexpected and kind! With children at home I'm used to having disturbed sleep. I was surprised to find actually, there was barely any noise from the road outside (we slept with the window open slightly too) and I couldn't hear a thing from the pub below despite it being busy when we went to sleep on our second night. I would say the room was much nicer than I expected - we aren't fussy and would be more than happy with a basic room, but it was truly lovely. I don't think the photos on booking.com do it justice! It's really large, felt like staying in a proper old fashioned Georgian property with all the gold and red. I loved it! The room and bathroom were very clean and had all the necessary amenities: teas/coffees, tv, wardrobe etc. I really don't have anything bad to say about our stay here, it was wonderful! The bed is on a bit of a funny angle, but we live in an 18th century house so are used to wonky floors and walls! And the shower didn't seem to drain so well - not sure if it needed unblocking or just old pipes 🙂 The breakfast was fantastic both days. Huge portions, steaming hot and everything fresh. Between us across the days we had the full English, Greek yogurt & fruit, eggs benedict, and avocado and poached eggs on toast. All absolutely delicious. The conservatory is a lovely place to have breakfast, and the beer garden at the back is large and clean, great place to have a drink on a nice day! Around the clock the staff seem to be working hard to clean and tidy around throughout the pub and rooms. It really was very well kept, yet the staff always had time for a smile and a hello. We absolutely wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and will be recommending it to our friends. What a hidden gem. Thank you to all the staff for such a lovely stay.

We visited this pub tonight for tea and waited 90 minutes for our order to arrive, however, it didn't arrive, although we were told by three members of staff that our food wouldn't be long but it still didn't arrive. The manager/chef couldn't even come out to apologise for the delay, so we asked for our money back. I eventually went into the kitchen to speak to the manager/chef and he wasn't interested, he just kept saying he didn't receive the order. Is it not his job to make sure that the customer is happy. I will not be eating there again

We went in for a meal on the pub. We both wear hearing aids and it was nice and quite at the back. We order drinks and food. Sat down to wait and then loud noisy music started up making it impossible for any conversation to place. I ask someone at the bar if they could turn it down as we wore aids which he did. 6 minutes later the loud noise resumed! The soup came in large mugs half filled...a weird way to serve and it came with white buttered bread...no choice of bread was offered. Next we were offered other people's meals by a rushed waitress and the dessert arrive before we had finished the soup. No sign of our main course some 20 minutes after we finished the soup. When the main orders did arrive one of the was wrong but rather than complain and maybe have to wait a long time for the correct meal to arrive it was accepted. The meal still suffered from my pet hate of hot food on cold plates...why? These errors and the fact the pub clearly suffers from a lack of and poor staff will mean we will not revisit or make any of our usual recommendations...Best to find somewhere else if you want decent service and a quiet atmosphere.

Recently stayed at the Exhibition Hotel and I'm so glad we did. The room was small but sufficient for staying in York for a couple of days. The bed was comfortable and I had the best few nights sleep. The pub itself is lovely, very quirky, the staff are very friendly. The breakfast is really good and there is plenty of food on offer in the morning to set you up for the rest of the day. The location of the pub is perfect, just around the corner from the Art gallery and a short stroll to the Shambles. With on site parking and a wonderfully decorated beer garden, The Exhibition Hotel is a fantastic place to stay

We are residents of York and love everything about this pub/hotel. We are regular visitors, but were shocked that someone was vaping inside this evening. My husband enquired at the bar and apparently it is allowed? Please try to understand that non smokers are customers also and vaping is as bad as smoking, this will be more than apparent in the next 5 to 10 years. We do not wish to inhale the fumes.
