Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed here for a birthday weekend as a couple. The hotel is in a great location particularly if you arrive by train as its short 5 min walk from the train station to the hotel and is also a 5 min walk over the bridge to the shops etc. I believe it's a relatively new hotel and looks and feels this way inside. We stayed in a deluxe room on the fourth floor where the bed is separated by a glass wall from a sitting area which was nice. There were lots of windows in the room which let in plenty of lights however we found there was a lot of noise from outside, I think because our room must have been above an alley and so we could hear a lot of noise from bins being emptied below us very early in the morning; you know the sound when glass bottle bins are emptied into a wagon just only at 7am on a Sunday morning. Perhaps some better insulated windows might have been a good idea. The room was clean with modern sort of industrial decor, we found the air con a but fiddly as kept switching the heat off so it got cold in there but we weren't there that much for it to bother us. We had breakfast both days and enjoyed the fact breakfast was cooked and brought to you rather than buffet and there was also a continental buffet selection. We did find it a bit strange that the full English didn't come with beans although presume you could have had them if you asked for it. We also ate in the rooftop restaurant which had a great atmosphere, nice food and a good selection of cocktails. We would definitely return here next time we come back to York will probably return in summer time.

Never stayed in such a dark small room with the bathroom in the bedroom. Clear shower door so could see my partner showering when I made a coffee, then when I showered I could see my reflection in full length mirror opposite the shower! Lighting dreadful all round in the room especially for drying hair, make up etc. Shaving mirror inadequate, so small and again lighting poor. Everywhere grey and black except for the walls in the toilet which were bright red!!

I chaired a leadership development seminar for 2 days at Malmaison in York. The hotel, the meeting facilities and the catering was excellent. In particular, our conference manager Abdalla was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend Malmaison if you are looking for a venue for business meeting in York.

Celebrating my 60th birthday with family we had 2 Club Rooms booked which were perfect , clean and big in space The problem we entailed was firstly the lack of staff and the sheer unhappiness that they all gave across to ourselves & fellow guests Asking the staff on the front desk to look after our cases was hard work as they were stressed & eyes rolled not a great start Thereafter we went to the bar whilst waiting for the rooms and stood over 10 minutes with other guests to order some drinks & snacks and on asking a gent who eventually served us did say “ Sorry for the delay “ it’s only me working - He didn’t seem happy and this came across by his body language On returning after a birthday dinner at 1035pm we headed for a night cap and understood the roof bar closed at 1130pm on arrival miserable staff barked “ Closed “ as no guests were there so go downstairs On arrival to the bar there was a line of people and one team member telling the queue at 10.50pm only one round of drinks as the bar closes at 11.30pm- not a great end to an evening with family To be honest I was fuming with the attitude and rudeness to guests of this guy and went to see the Duty Night Manager Luke who like the rest of the staff we encountered showed no empathy or seemed interested in me expressing unhappiness apart from telling me the hotel was short staffed REALLY !! No s**t Sherlock - this property seriously needs to address this staff problem as reading other reviews this is the main gripe from guests plus a training course in customer service & skills is needed Great Rooms and Property sadly staff you do have show low morale , are tired and offer no service at all to present guests Not a great stay 😡

Booked to stay at Malmaison York as an early Valentine’s treat for my husband and I. Couldn’t check in until 3pm but the hotel looked after our bags so we could head out for some lunch. Nice and easy check in with friendly helpful staff. 2 key cards given and instructions for our stay written on a little card along with some recommendations of places to eat and drink. Lovely modern room with nice decor. Quite dark which was nice but It did make getting ready to go out a little difficult. Comfy bed and extra pillows in the wardrobe. Tv hidden behind the artwork on the wall. Amazing shower. Lovely toiletries. Nice bathroom area. All open plan with the bedroom with only the toilet behind a door. The room was very warm with the heating set at 28 but we worked out that the little screen near the door changed the temp so we could lower it before we went out. Breakfast was amazing. Hot and cold breakfast with lots to choose from and all delicious. Sora bar on the 7th floor roof terrace of the hotel is worth a visit. Nice cocktails and amazing views. Hotel is 2mins walk over the bridge and you get to the shops and restaurants. Perfect location. We used the NCP tanner street car park near to the hotel as you receive discount from the to park here (ask for a card when you check out) We throughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Poor check in procedures (queue of 15 people and took over half an hour), bags left unsafely out behind reception (not secure in luggage store as promised), very noisy room. A real shame as we were looking forward to an early valentines treat away.

Turned up here without a reservation. Only fly in ointment was room not ready at allocated time, but this was rectified with complimentary drinks whilst we were waiting. The suite was nice…..decent value considering the location and nice and quiet. Letting people go lower than 19 on the aircon would be nice as many people can’t sleep in a room that warm. Minor niggle but easily sorted. Breakfast was fab and the staff were all lovely. So it’s a five stars from me - and a much better option than The Principal if The Grand is full.

We were looking forward to visiting the rooftop bar and were told it was open until midnight. We rushed back after out post-theatre dinner and at 11.20 it was closed. The hoodie-wearing “manager” made no apology, just said it was quiet. The hotel lacks signage, so is hard to navigate, the room was way too dark, had very uncomfortable seating and we only had one large towel. Many other minor niggles but overall just not the standard of a club room in a four star hotel.

Came for a one night stay using the TransPennine sale train tickets. Despite the weather being pretty atrocious the welcome here was second to none, what we expect at Malmaison. The room was lovely, bed comfortable and location excellent. Special thanks to Jamie in the bar/restaurant for looking after us so well, such a friendly and approachable guy and a credit to the hotel.
