We spent a weekend in late November staying at the Amor Matris, and loved it. The owners were very friendly and were a joy to chat to on the way in or out to visit the sights (The centre of the city is barely 15 minutes walk away). The room was lovely and clean but still had loads of character and didn't feel like a cut & paste hotel room, and both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian breakfasts were lovely and filling. We'll definitely be staying here again soon!
From the moment we walked in to the Amor Matris we were made to feel welcome. The owners are so thoughtful, nothing is too much trouble (same can be said of all the staff). Theres such a lovely atmosphere about the place. The house is so clean and beautifully decorated. The breakfast was fantastic! Plenty of food to fill you up for the day, we often had a later lunch because we were still so full from the morning! The room was lovely with such comfortable beds and helpful amenities. Everything you need is just a short walk away. Will certainly book to stay again next time we visit York. Can't recomend them highly enough.
Ok, so the place is tired and needs a freshen up but dont let that put you off. The room was basic and we had shared a bathroom but it was clean and tidy. After all it was just a base to go and discover york. The hosts were lovely, there to help and provided a fantastic breakfast to set you up for a day of sight seeing, shopping and drinking. The property was no more that a 10 minute walk to the city walls. If your really fussy there are much more expensive places to stay but for £130 for 2 nights doesn't break the bank and gives you a bit more spending/drinking money.
The room I had was room N04, I don't think this room has been cleaned in months. There was hairs on and around the sink basin amongst other things, the carpet was about 50 years old and didn't appear to be hoovered. The draws on the unit in the room most of them was screwed shut with protruding heads, I was told not to use the shower in my room as it was too hot, But the landlady uses it. The shared bathroom was worse as the toilet seat does a 180 turn when you sit down, the basin had remnant's of the last person on it. the sink basin had hair dust and dried soap all mixed in together the, shower is equally the same. I came away itching and felt like I had been crawled on by some creatures !!! The kitchen cutlery had burnt in egg on them & breakfast condiments were all dusty and not very well cleaned, This is a very old fashioned house that is ran by 2 elderly people, it states online great views of York Minster, all I saw was the tips of the buildings, To them it was a palace, to me it was unclean and unhealthy. as I stated before this is room no4 as we didn't see the other rooms ...…
Stayed here for Easter weekend, great hosts so friendly, accommodation and breakfast was excellent, in the heart of York close to all attractions, hopefully not so long before we visit you again, thank you 😊 x
