We were greeted by Sabina on arrival who advised us regarding on street parking as car park was full. We were in room 1- the decor is a little dated but the room was spotless and covered all bases. Shower was lovely and hot and plenty of towels. Bed was comfortable. The room was adequate size but the walls were a bit crowded with large pictures -I think it would look better with less on the walls. We ordered our breakfast for 9am and we were asked what we required the night before. The breakfast was perfect and good quality. Sabina was a wonderful host, very friendly and professional making our short stay more personal. The hotel is in a great location for tbe Barbican and for the town. It’s great to stay somewhere that is independently owned.

As soon as we arrive, the owner was a little bit bossy and was in a hurry to go. Not helpful at all. Very rude, as soon as we finish breakfast at 9.00 was asking for the payment when the checkout is at 10.30am, she complained that we didn’t order the breakfast online and said: now you’ll pay more. The bedsheets were a bit wet and the heating was on from 8pm to 10pm, only two hours, the sink was blocked and the shower not cleaned properly, it wasn’t a good value for money £150 per night, with a no working tiny TV either. The breakfast was ok, small portions for £15.00, the coffee was cold and when asked to make it warmer, she didn’t make it warmer, so I don’t enjoyed not even my breakfast. I also would like to make people aware that she only take cash, or bank transfer.

Response from Barbican House, Owner at Barbican House
Responded 4 weeks ago
Dear Claudia, I was in no rush to go anywhere when I checked you in, I simply and kindly asked your husband to straighten up your car as he had parked diagonally making it difficult for others to park - you may have misinterpreted that as being rude. In your booking email we clearly state payment on arrival, but you had yet to make payment the following day and so I kindly reminded your husband after you had finished eating your breakfast as you were leaving that day. I informed you both that had you booked directly you would have paid less overall – there is no need for me to complain about this, I was only informing you as a tip for next time and breakfast can be added on arrival – that has never been a problem with us. We serve full English breakfast along with fresh fruits, choice of cereals, yoghurts etc – apologies if that is still small portions for you and as for the coffee, we reheated it as requested. Our bed linens are washed, dried, and ironed by our launderette so a little confused as to why you thought it was wet. Heating is turned on from 3pm onwards and automatically turns on and off thereafter depending on the temperature of the house. Sink was working perfectly fine but if it did become blocked during your stay all you had do was inform us, it would have been easily solved and same with the TV. Bank transfer is our "preferred" method of payment as stated on your booking email but we also accept card and cash payment. We welcome constructive feedback, but this doesn’t seem to be the case in your review and we also do not appreciate false information being spread. Our overall reviews clearly highlight you are one of the very few whose opinion does not align. Regards, Barbican House

What an excellent find! Very close to the Barbican and 10min walk into the city centre. Parking available at the Hotel, but also lots of nearby free on-street parking. Hosts are very welcoming and pleasant. Our room was lovely and its the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in!! Want one myself! Free WiFi, large TV, tea making facilities, shampoos, and lovely decor. Definitely a great place to stay.

This is a delightful guest house in a perfect location. The room was clean and comfortable with tea and coffee facilities and the dining room very quaint. There was excellent communication with the hosts and Sabina gave us a friendly welcome when we arrived. Would stay there again if travelling to York and would recommend to others.

An excellent place to stay. Durga was an excellent host and even greeted us with some music using his Maadal drum. The place is very clean, well furnished rooms and are very well appointed with extras such as tea, coffee, biscuits, soap, cotton buds etc etc etc. The standard of the interior of the rooms was very high and the bed was comfortable with a good nights sleep being had. The breakfast was served exactly as asked for and Durga was very attentive throughout. and an excellent host. The location is superb if attending the Barbican Theatre or just visiting York expecially in the town centre area which was in easy walking distance. I would not hesitate to stay at this location again if visiting York.

We booked our long weekend through booking.com at Barbican House. Excellent location just by Walmgate Bar. Our host was an absolute gentleman and super helpful. Room was super clean and tidy, bed was very comfortable. You’re asked to pay via bank transfer, not a problem but something to be aware of. All in all, highly recommended.

Lovely accommodation, spotlessly clean and great location near to city centre. The hosts were polite and friendly throughout our 3 day stay and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was first rate, too. Would definitely go here again, money well spent. Many thanks to Durga and family!
