The Bar Convent is England's oldest living convent, established in 1686 as a school for girls. Today, the Grade I Listed building is one of York's most unique places to stay, promising peace, quiet and friendly service in a heritage setting. Our rooms are largely en-suite, with a few lower-priced rooms on the top floor with shared bathroom facilities. There is an award-winning café on site, as well as an state-of-the-art Exhibition on the convent's fascinating history. Just around the corner from York Rail Station, and only minutes into the centre of town, The Bar Convent's location is second-to-none and provides easy access to the city's famous walls. A large number of restaurants, pubs and bars are nearby. The Bar Convent is proud to provide York's warmest welcome, to those of all faiths and none.

I enquired about a room for next year. My mother has 'mobility issues' and walks with a stick so I emailed about suitable rooms only to be shot down saying it would have to be a room on the second or third floor and the lift could accomodate a wheelchair. I didn't recall asking about wheelchair access. 'subject to availability we have rooms on the first and second floors, we do have a lift that will accommodate a wheel chair' Judging by the response I have contacted another hotel so won't be staying here if that's their style of customer service! Someone who has mobility issues needs to know they can book a suitable room, they are not 'subject to availability' and able to be shoved in any room!

Hello joytripper634 - we're saddened to receive such a low rating from you over such a small misunderstanding. By 'subject to availability', our receptionist simply meant that you hadn't yet confirmed a booking with us. Our guest house is very popular and we can end up fully booked quite far in advance, especially on summer weekends. For clarity, we're fully able to meet the needs of guests with mobility issues such as your mother. We have disabled access from the street and our lift serves the first and second floors. As shown by our other reviews here on TripAdvisor, our friendly reception team spare no effort in making all of our guests feel at home. We're sorry that you didn't get the chance to experience our warm welcome for yourself. Nonetheless, we hope you and your mother enjoy your trip to York next year - all the best to you both.

I stayed in The Bar Convent as a solo traveller whilst up in York for a flying visit for my Friend’s 40th birthday party. I stayed in a single room and was very happy with my stay there. The room was cosy, quiet, well equipped and immaculate. It was very peaceful there, and whilst I am not new to travelling alone, I had a lovely sense of feeling safe and secure, being a lone female traveller. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was tasty, although my only very slight disappointment in my stay here was that my fried egg came out hard rather than runny! But that is just me being super picky, as I was overall very happy with my stay and would stay there again. Very good value for money and highly recommended.

Hello yorkshire689! Thank you so much for your very kind review. We're thrilled that you were comfortable during your stay, particularly as a lone female traveller. The Bar Convent has been a place of sanctuary and welcome for over three hundred years, so it means a great deal to us that you felt safe here. Thank you again for choosing us for your trip to York. PS. I've spoken to our cafe team, who have confirmed they'd be happy to make runny fried eggs on request ;) We hope we'll see you again some day.

I would recommend this quaint and beautiful B&B to anyone. Clean and tidy. Amazing customer service - thanks to my star staff member Phil Generous and freshly prepared breakfast I stayed in the single St Clare’s Room overlooking the garden. If you want modern, clinical and conformity- this is not for you. If you want to stay in the oldest living convent in the U.K., the quirky places but full of home comforts please come here. You won’t be disappointed.

Central, welcoming, warm, good value for money, the Bar Convent has been a religious community since the end of the 17th century. The building housed one of the earliest girls' schools and today has rooms for all kinds of activity of an inter faith kind as well as a fine museum tracing the history of what has become the ladies' equivalent of the Jesuits. Enjoy your stay!

And the breakfast is very nice 😊 we shall definitely we returning. The staff couldn't have been more helpful from carrying our luggage and ensuring we had a pleasant stay with our young children.
