We had a 2-night stay dinner bed and breakfast stay on Wednesday/Thursday August 18/19 2021. The location is superb, the room was large and comfortable with a great view , the food was very good; dinner menu was interesting and breakfast was freshly cooked with locally sourced produce. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We will be back.

Last minute getaway and this seemed like the ideal place! The roads aren't for the faint hearted in the dark, they were treacherous after a couple of days of ice cold weather but the pub was warm and welcoming. We checked in to our room which did overlook the road but there was very little noise.

We had the largest room, The Whitestone Gill, which was very spacious albeit with a slightly outdated feel in the bathroom. We watched a bit of television before dinner but did spend the first 15 minutes re-engaged the aerial cable due to how loose it was meaning we lost signal frequently.

We ate in the restaurant and by gosh is the food good. The portions are considerable but the food is absolutely top notch. We had to wait a little due to a fryer going out of action mid service but this was apologised for and we didn't mind a warm cozy pub atmosphere in the meantime. We did have room for a beautifully cooked chocolate fondant pudding with the tartest cherry ice cream which complimented the dessert perfectly. Service throughout was outstanding and it was a packed pub on a Saturday night in November.

There is no signal here, at all, wifi worked well in the rooms and in the restaurant but phone signal was out of the question.

The bed was simply divine, the duvet was perfectly weighted and the pillows were pillowy soft. A very good nights sleep was had by all.

Breakfast which you ordered at the table was again all local produce cooked exceptionally well with a lot of continental options to choose from. I loved the fact that walkers could come in from breakfast regardless of needing to stay in the hotel.

Check out was smooth and we were on our way to Aysgarth. This place would be even more delightful in the spring and summer.

We stayed here for one night en route to Scotland. We had a superior room with lovely views but only a hand held shower. The room was beautifully furnished with quality fitments, the bed was comfortable and the towels were fluffy and fairly new.
It was a Sunday and we had the Sunday roast, himself had pork and I had beef - it was one of the best ever roast dinners we have had. Absolutely superb - and followed up with the best Eton Mess ever.

Our collie dog Dolly B was allowed to sit under the table and behaved well as did other dogs who came in and out from time to time.

Breakfast next morning was also superb with an excellent choice - himself had the full English of course and I had scrambled egg and smoked salmon with LOTS of salmon.

I hadn't realised when booking that this inn was on so many levels and there's quite a few steps. The steps down to the reading lounge and accommodation were quite tricky for me. It was best to use the door in the accommodation area and use the path round the outside to the front of the inn ! Not much fun if it were raining.

We absolutely loved this old inn with the friendly and helpful staff for whom nothing was too much trouble and we would most definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it to any of our friends and to any readers of this review. It really is very remote without being scary. It is peaceful, rural but with great atmosphere.

Thank you to all.

Stayed as a couple but part of a college reunion. We were allocated room 7. This was over the bar and incredibly noisy. We asked to be moved but were told the hotel was full and the only other room was equally noisy as it was near the area where the darts club would be playing until 11.30 at least. There was a complete lack of empathy from the member of staff on duty, far more an attitude of “not my problem “.
In the morning we were awoken by rain falling onto the bed. Looking at the ceiling this obviously was an ongoing problem. We placed a bin and tea tray on the bed to capture it and reported it to a staff member after breakfast Again a total lack of interest. We were told he would look and see if it “might” be possible to move us later. Only when we pointed out that we’d be forced to check out immediately as we couldn’t stay in a room with a wet bed did he finally agree to look and see what was available. At this point a member of the housekeeping staff intervened and straight away found us another room and offered to move our belongings
The subsequent room was fine, much quieter and thankfully dry.
The following day the housekeeping staff again checked all was well and the same person apologised.
On paying the bill I pointed out that it had been a pretty bad experience. This was again greeted with a total lack of interest.
Front of house staff could learn a lot from housekeeping in terms of customer care. Had those we dealt with at least tried to show some sympathy we might not have felt so annoyed. It was supposed to be a relaxing break, catching up with old friends. It most definitely was not. The food was adequate, not special enough to justify the prices charged. The location great but the whole experience let down by poor service.
Not an experience I would ever wish to repeat and definitely not a venue I could recommend.

While the location, food and accommodation during my two night stay were all fine, not amazing but fine. (My room had a plastic bath with shower curtain, the kind that sticks to you, and an electric shower over it). We found both the hotel manager and restaurant manager to be less than accommodating.

Examples of this include, on night one after arriving at 7pm, following a 6hr journey, dinner we sat for dinner which was adequate we were a group of 8. At the end of dinner we had wine left over which we wanted to take through to the hotel lounge to finish. Instead we were told this was not possible as the manager wanted to lock up so we were sent to bed. It was 11pm. On arriving at breakfast the next morning at 7.30am we were informed that no breakfast was available until 8am. Obviously I understand if the Chef is not there then the staff can’t be expected to magic up cooked food early, but I would expect to be offered coffee, juice or even just a glass of water.

Despite the fact that the restaurant is open to non residents we were forced to make our evening meal choices at breakfast. One of our party tried to change his mind in the evening and was told this was something he absolutely could not do. This seems odd as I am sure the non resident dinner guests are not forced to make their evening meal choices at 8am.

I would not have minded the shower curtain, early ordering etc but after 48hrs of computer says no in a sulky voice I just got a bit fed up with the customer care.

This is a truly beautiful part of Yorkshire and the UK. I am sure there must be much more hospitable and charming places to stay.

My husband & I had dinner here on Thursday evening 8th, & couldn’t fault the delicious food, or the great service. I remarked to my husband that the food rivalled a 5 star hotel/restaurant in our home town.
However, we went again this evening the 10th, for our 7pm reservation. (All reservations were booked well over a week ago) The food was just as good, but the experience was marred by having to wait nearly 25 minutes before being asked what desserts we would like, then another 25 minutes before they actually arrived! I was told there was a problem with one of the machines in the kitchen. From what we ordered, I doubt a machine was used for our desserts, but if one was, then out of courtesy, we should have been told there would be a delay. The front of house staff tonight were different from Thursday evening. Taking all this into consideration my 5 stars have gone down to 4.
We have another reservation booked for this Tuesday evening at 7.30pm (unless English hospitality is closed down due to more Covid restrictions by then) so let’s hope we are not let down with service again! Look out for my next review if restrictions are not brought in.

My friend had organised her retirement do for her family and a few friends. The place did seem very busy with drinkers and diners but the staff were highly stressed and could not seem to cope. The rooms were ok but the finishing touches could be better. Water to bathrooms is a big issue but there are signs to warn you but both nights we had no cold water to the shower and bath. Food was good but expensive. Breakfast was disjointed because the staff had to do everything due to COVID regulations. All in all we had fun on our walks but ‘Fawlty Towers’ could do with a better manager and better finishing touches. Be warned there are no night staff from midnight to 7am - not sure their insurance company would be happy.

Response from Charles Cody, Owner at The Charles Bathurst Inn
Responded 10 Sept 2020
Firstly, my apologies regarding the water. We manage our own water system and, unfortunately, we did have an issue at the collection point due to high volumes of rain which, for a short period, temporarily disrupted the supply. This is fortunately a rare occurrence. I'm pleased you enjoyed our food; we have found that the Dinner, Bed and Breakfast allowance of £22.50 per person, when taken over 2/3 days, does balance itself out. We constantly review our prices and believe that our food prices are extremely competitive, when compared to other one rosette restaurants. We have adopted a very serious approach to ensuring that our guests feel safe and this has understandably had a significant impact on elements of service. If it had been clear from the outset that you were in fact attempting to make a group booking, we would not have accepted your booking in the first place. By booking rooms separately, it was not clear until your arrival that this was the case, compounded by the fact that children's futons were actually used by adults. This further compromised our planning as we only ever permit, and therefore expect, 2 adults in our rooms. As a result, the planning for the whole restaurant on the first night had to be completely reconfigured to accommodate your group, whilst also ensuring that we met with the current Covid19 requirements and that our other guests felt safe. Understandably this caused significant strain to my FoH team, not only on the first night, but throughout your stay. Breakfast is probably the meal that has been affected most significantly by current restrictions as, in order to maintain the wide range of choice usually served at our buffet, we have to rely more heavily on individual table service. Whilst we try to ease this by spreading the number of people coming into breakfast at any one time, unfortunately in your case, timings were for the most part, ignored. Our arrangements for fire and burglar alarm response are sophisticated, effective and are fully compliant and known to our insurers.

We were staying in a village nearby and enjoyed a very good meal here. The menu had lots of choice, the quality of the food was very good and super tasty. We had starters and main courses and they were all consistently excellent. The service was very good too despite it being quite busy and everyone was very pleasant and friendly. Despite the challenges of the rising cost of living the prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food and wine.

We decided to stay at CB after hearing many positive comments from family members who have stayed and dined previously- and our expectations were met!
CB has friendly and helpful staff. The room was very clean and tidy with a beautiful view. Finally, the food was exceptional; the quality of the food was reflected in the price, but worth every penny.
We shall be coming again!

We ate here on Friday night for supper whilst on holiday in the area. We all had the sea bass - fish of the day which was absolutely delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly, in fact, everything was cooked perfectly - the prawns, asparagus, and the potatoes. They were very accommodating of my gluten intolerance and the staff were really friendly and professional even though they were extremely busy. I'd really recommend it for the food and the atmosphere - and the views!
