Just got back from a week staying in The Stable. A lovely, cosy, well equipped, dog friendly cottage. It had everything we needed and was lovely and clean. Really quiet area with amazing dark skies. And a friendly chicken that came by each day to say hello!!
Really good location to explore Kielder and beyond. One tip I would give, is to make sure you book in to local pubs for food in advance as they fill up quickly and there's little choice to eat out beside the pubs.
All in all an amazing cottage that we plan to go back to.

What a gem of a cosy cottage. It was icy outside but very cosy indoors. Our dog loved the local walks too! Would defo recommend The Stables to stop in. Dark skies meant to could see so much more than usual. So quiet for a working farm and lovely to be woken to big skies with sunrise and sheep.

very comfy and cosy, very clean and well equipped. Kids enjoyed it very much too. The street is busyer as we thought because besides that its quiet and very remote. Good place to start walks from. Swing or slide in back garden would be perfect to let the kids play outside.

The cottage is lovely and sympathetically restored. The beds were comfortable. However, on the second morning in builders turned up, erected scaffolding and proceeded to dismantle the closely adjacent barn. They were using angle grinders and removing asbestos. They also left the gate open and our dog got out, although when told they were careful after that. The owners were away at the time and when they returned the work stopped but the scaffolding which was partly on the terrace of the cottage remained. They were also mean with the toiletries and cleaning products and the towels did not smell fresh. I was expecting a welcome pack with at the very least some milk but there was nothing. We did not get cakes but they gave us a bottle of wine as compensation. We should have been told about the work so that we could have made an informed decision about renting the property. On the plus side, it is lovely countryside and well placed for exploring the area. Despite the disappointment, we enjoyed our holiday.

Our fourth visit to Tarset and have already booked for next year. I cannot agree with previous review about lack of welcome pack, toiletries etc. A welcome pack is not advertised so I would not expect one and there were sufficient products (washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc.) to get us started. It is self catering after all so we provided our own. The cottage is beautiful and we look forward to seeing the new one when it comes into use next year.

We spent a fantastic week staying at the Byres on Knoppingholme farm. Right from the freshly baked chocolate cake on the dining room table, alongside the handwritten welcome note, Nigel, Rachel and both of their Mums went out of their way to make us feel at home.
Half an hour after we arrived, Nigel popped over to make sure we were settling in, quickly followed by his Mum, who provided us with a parking permit for Kielder forest car park and an invitation to visit the ruins of Tarset castle just behind her farm and just a few hundred yards from Knoppingholme.
The cottage itself is beautifully furnished throughout and provides everything you need for a relaxing break in the heart of Northumberland. It’s close to Kielder reservoir, forest and observatory and the Roman archaeological sites of Vindolanda, Housteads and Hadrian’s Wall. A trip to the coast to visit the Farne Islands and Bamburgh castle is easily doable in a day. You will likely find that a week isn’t long enough as there is so much to see in this lovely area.
Tarset cottage and the Byres provide the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Northumberland countryside.
We stopped and picked up some groceries at Hexham on the journey up. This proved to be a good strategy. The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, so we were able to cook for ourselves on most evenings. If you don’t want to cook, the farm is just a few miles’ drive from the wonderful Pheasant Inn with its impressive menu, real ales and super friendly staff. For essentials, the nearest Co-Op, bakery and takeaways are in Bellingham.
We were blessed with beautiful weather for the entire week, which allowed us to explore the mountain biking trails at Kielder and Glentress, just across the Scottish border. Having the luxury of the slipper bath and wonderfully comfy bed in the master bedroom allowed us to ease our aching muscles and get some much-needed rest.
The way that the bedrooms are separated by the central living area makes the Byres ideal for sharing with friends, or older children, and the snug upstairs would provide a perfect TV room for teenagers while the adults relax downstairs.
The mobile phone signal is none existent, but the WiFi in the Byres was strong enough to allow us to keep up with family and friends, look up weather forecasts for the following day and even hire a good film to curl up and watch to round off the day.
The huge arched windows treat you to some spectacular sunsets over Birks Moor and also heat up the cottage on sunny days, while the picnic table on the front terrace is a lovely touch for enjoying al fresco breakfasts or sundowners.
We would highly recommend the Byres to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday, with a touch of luxury, in a convenient and beautiful location and run by the friendliest people.

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful cottage with our two young children and our dog. On arrival we were greeted by a treat for the dog and some lovely home baked buns! The owners had been fantastic and there was a high chair , two stair gates and a cot for our baby. Everything about this place was pleasing - we could not fault anything ( and I am very particular!) The owners were attentive to any needs and most helpful. We stayed in the stable but were lucky enough to view the interior of the farmhouse next door which was also top class . I would recommend this accommodation without hesitation.
