We booked a bed and cooked breakfast for two at Colwick Hall for under £60, so we weren’t expecting much—but we were pleasantly surprised in some ways.
Colwick Hall is a charming, historic building set in lovely grounds next to Nottingham Racecourse, just a few miles from the city centre. It has an impressive exterior and a tranquil setting, which added to the overall experience.
We stayed in the George Washington room, which was spacious but had only a small window (see photo), so there wasn’t a view. The room was on the cooler side, though the electric radiator provided helped. While comfortable enough, the room's decor felt a little mismatched, which seemed to reflect the eclectic style of the hotel as a whole.
The staff were friendly and helpful. For supper, we enjoyed a delicious soup in the bar/restaurant. Breakfast included a cold buffet and hot items cooked to order, both of which were fine.
For the price, I can’t fault the value. That said, I think I’d personally opt for something a bit more modern in this price range next time.

The hotel is a fantastic building - the ancestral home of the notorious Lord Byron. The building has kept its amazing old charm and the grounds are very splendid with at least two large, ornate, working fountains. The hotel is situated right next to Nottingham race course. There is a large, free (to hotel guests) car park. The staff are lovely and very friendly. Our room was very reasonably priced for such a lovely place (£85 for the night) however our room was on the second floor, under the roof and this meant that the window was small and the view was simply the rooftop balustrade, only a couple of feet beyond the glass. The room was very well supplied with complimentary bathrobes, tea, coffee and bottled water. Breakfast was not included in the price and it was nice and priced £16. We had dinner the evening we arrived and it was pricey (£80.90p for 2 courses and 2 drinks) and although well presented, it was not of high quality. My partner said that her chicken was undercooked. Apart from the food and the window view, it was a very enjoyable visit.

Lovely building and very spacious room (luxury suite) full of character. Despite the age of the building and the size of the rooms, we were surprised how lovely and warm the rooms and all areas were kept - which was important bearing in mind we arrived during a cold snap! Service from all staff we encountered was exceptional, and the food in the restaurant was very good. Kitchen were very helpful and flexible when dealing with food allergies.

Wedding Venue - Terrible Service... Ruined Wedding Cake & Day We got married here in the summer, and had a really bad experience on the day. Colwick Hall sold us a dream prior to the wedding day, but never followed through on the day itself. Prior to booking with Colwick Hall, we were assured that we would be a priority throughout the day as often, other events are held at the same time, however on the day we were told they didn't have enough time as they were too busy helping with the other event. They set up our cake table incorrectly which resulted in our cake table collapsing and our cake falling to the ground. This meant we were unable to cut our wedding cake on the day. We had an elderly guest fall over due to a health and safety breech. Prior to our guest falling, this was flagged to a member of the Colwick Hall staff, however the response was that they were again too busy to help. Given that we expected the temperatures on the day to be hot, we'd asked for the doors in the marquee to be kept open, this was not done. So when our guests arrived, the marquee was unbearably warm, we had a lot of complaints from our guests, especially those with young children. When we requested Colwick Hall to help with this, they told us to go to reception ourselves to solve the matter - not really possible when you're the people getting married? We were told we had full use of the kitchen and the washing facilities on the day. We didn't want our guests to be using plastic glasses, and had already rented cocktail glasses, so wanted these to be used. When we ran out of the cocktail glasses, a staff member actively stopped us from using the washing facilities we were initially promised. After the wedding day, we did write to Colwick Hall to flag these points with the hope of resolving the issue. We never received a response with any responsibility or even an apology. Instead after several conversations with them, they offered us £150 (we had trusted them with our special day and already spent over £10k with them, plus our cake costed us close to £1,000) I can appreciate things go wrong on such big events, however I am truly disappointed with how Colwick Hall handled the event on the day and how little responsibility they have taken through the conversations after. I would strongly recommend anyone who is looking at Colwick Hall to think twice about trusting them with such a special day.

Dear Simran I am sorry to read your comments and we thank you for your feedback which we take very seriously. The Asian wedding outside catering package gives the dry hire of the marquee. All services such as food, drink, cake, decor and other services were organised by you directly with external suppliers. As per your contract, we do not accept responsibility for your cake. Your caterers had full access to the kitchen. The glasswasher is in a separate room not linked to the kitchen and is private for staff only. We had always responded to you promptly and you later advised that you were busy and abroad and left to your mum with whom we also liaised. We had addressed your points with you directly some months ago and your mother had written to accept the goodwill gesture. Once again, our sincere apologies. Kind regards Colwick Hall team

I spoke to Geetha about having my Uncle's wake at Colwick Hall. When I said we would want external caterers, she didn't mention to me any extra costs that would occur and any of the issues my cousins would face. Once my cousins went to meet with Geetha, she made them so uncomfortable and kept adding on extra costs that they would need to pay. Who would have thought venue hire wouldn't include some of the things she was trying to charge us for, like hot water, oven use, tablecloths, cutlery, and even for setting up the night before. Not only were they dealing with the death of their Father, but they were now having to deal with sorting out so many extra things that would have never occurred to them. We went to set up the night before, and all lighting was on as people were setting up, despite Geetha trying to charge them for room hire the night before to set up. Tables were not laid out as requested, and we ended up putting a lot of chairs out ourselves. During the wake, a few things were not done as requested, for example, the back area of the marquee being open for use. Bar staff could not cope with the number of people wanting drinks, nor did they have enough glasses, despite the warning of how many people would be there. Staff kept turning the heaters off, which led to guests putting coats on and being uncomfortable, we had to ask for them to be turned back on. On top of all this, we had to clean up all the disposable plates and cups that were brought in by us as we were not allowed to use theirs, and we were not allowed to use their bins free of charge which lead to great stress, when it was the last thing needed. I will never be recommending anybody I know to hold an event here. The service was awful. My cousin still awaits a reply to her email that she sent last week. If I could give 0 stars I would.

Our 3 night stay was a catalogue of errors, poor service and poor facilities.
Check in went well, with a friendly receptionist, but when we left reception to go to our “suite” we were greeted with a stale, musty smell on the Grand Staircase. This smell, we later realised was from the kitchen and permeated into our “suite”. The sme was so bad that we left our windows open for the full duration of our stay.
Without dwelling too much on each issue: One of the robes in our ‘suite” was covered in makeup and had to be exchanged on arrival. Bar staff are unable to follow their own book on how to make gin…wrong mixers and garnish. The bathroom door handle was hanging off. Fire doors were left propped open with fire extinguishers. The Grand Staircase is used as a dumping ground for spare chairs and looks scruffy. Restaurant staff were woefully badly trained, with one waitress repeatedly taking her hair down and then tying it up again, and no idea about how to serve customers. The restaurant manager was rude, leaving guests to fend for themselves at breakfast, and looked like he had slept in his clothes, with trousers so badly creased I doubt they have ever been near an iron. The “suite” had no curtains, just wooden shutters, which look nice but do nothing to block the light from the multiple spot lights illuminating the front of the building and are on all night, resulting in strips of light across the room. Not good if you prefer to sleep in a dark room. Food in the restaurant was tasty, but did not match the description, or the price tag. The “suite” was superficially clean, but corners of the room and next to furniture were dusty and needed a deep clean. The “suite” was actually just a large room, with a separate bathroom. Window frames were rotten and covered in mould and mildew.
The only positive for us was the friendly reception staff.
For us, this was like a poorly run guest house, not a 4* hotel. The place is in serious need of a major overhaul.

We had always wanted to stay at Colwick Hall but sadly we were disappointed. While its exterior is very grand and the location is fabulous the inside of the hotel we felt was in need of some fresh paint and upgraded furniture. Our room was on the top floor with a small window and no view. The room was huge as was the bathroom but it was sparsely furnished. The floor was uneven but we accepted that because of the age of the building, but the bathroom floor was dangerous when wet, the tiles were totally unsuitable for a bathroom and very slippy when dry and wet Our breakfast was extra and not good value for money. The fresh melon was under ripe the continental section lacked food items, the cooked options were limited to either Full English or vegetarian cooked. The sausages were tasteless and the fried bread very oily. The staff were pleasant but seemed stressed. The location is lovely and so nice not to have to stay in the City centre but the hotel needs some life bringing back into it as it felt tired and shabby.

Dear Lyn, thank you for your review, we appreciate all feedback given, we are so sorry to read the comments from your stay. Our Standard rooms are on the second floor and as mentioned these do have the smaller windows with the original balustrade around the top of the Hall. We do provide bath mats and non slips mats in the bathrooms. Being a historic house we are constantly working on the rooms and our maintenance team are actively working on the improvements. We take on board your feedback to share with our breakfast team and will ensure these are rectified. Our staff are always here to help. Once again please accept my sincere apologies. Glad to hear you enjoyed the location and we look forward to welcoming you again.

My daughter and son had arranged Afternoon Tea for my birthday. We arrived at the hotel and there was plenty of space in the car park as it was quite large. We went in and the receptionist was very helpful and showed us where we needed to go and checked us in for the Afternoon Tea.
The room was really bright with lovely artificial branches with delicate blooms on which really softened the ambience. We were dealt with very efficiently and were not waiting very long. My daughter had arranged that we had 'mocktails' as we were driving and I am not sure what they were, but they were very citrus and fresh tasting. We were asked what we would like to drink with the Afternoon Tea and very soon afterwards the food stands were brought to the table. The array was five different types of sandwiches on different types of bread e.g. focaccia, croissant, deli roll, there was soup of the day with ham and swiss cheese on an open brioche slider, parmesan and chive shortbread and there were six desserts. Everything was delicious.
My daughter had told the person that took the booking that it was for my birthday and at the end I was presented with a cake with two candles on and was sung Happy Birthday. It was all a lovely experience and we were not rushed out and the staff were all friendly and polite.
When we had finished eating we then took a walk in the grounds and discovered the lake and walk. It was a very warm September Sunday and we were able to take some great photos of the lake and trees as well as photos inside.
I would certainly come here again and would recommend it.

I think the pictures say it all for this review. We were meant to be staying here as a treat but it turned into a nightmare. Carpet was filthy, valance sheet around the bed had stains on it, wallpaper peeling and stained, thick dust on lights and ripped material on furniture. We paid £230 for a signature suite which was a reduced rate as we had some discount from booking.com, but I wouldn’t stay here if you paid me. We checked out as quickly as we checked in and found a charming pub half an hour away which did b and b for less than half the price. How they can charge over £200 for something of this standard I have no idea! You can see that once upon a time this would have been a luxury hotel but it is need of a lot of money spending on it to return it to the standard where they can charge hundreds of pounds for a room. After the receptionist rang the management we were offered a £50 refund but we stood our ground and managed to get £200 back. Whilst in the reception area my husband heard people complaining about the afternoon tea but we didn’t stay long enough to try the food. It is such a shame as it is a beautiful building and could be so lovely.

We had our wedding in the Byron Brasserie on 10th August. From the moment we made enquiries Geetha was very helpful and hands-on, helping in drafting our program and with suggestions & recommendations for the seating plan as we wanted to have a small number of guests which kept on increasing as the months get closer. Communication was flawless & very accommodating with changes we made in the months coming to our wedding day.
Duty Manager Sam called me (bride) a day before the wedding to touch base, making sure all the preparations are in place. On the day of the wedding with my nerves going overdrive (was in bridedzilla mode for not being able to visit the venue before guests arrival to check on the deco myself but just trusting the vendor who was hired to decorate) I called her to check if things are done properly & she assured me and told me lovingly "...what are you doing calling this time, go get married!" She welcomed us at the hotel and handed over to the night Duty Manager Hari who was very exceptional with his waiting staff!!!! We can't thank them enough as they were so attentive not just to us but to all our guests, checking with us during the whole time to make sure the program was going as planned. The waiting staff were readily available whenever needed but also discreet at the same time (not right in your face).
The bar staff deserve a special mention, they served our guests until the last call at 22:55...yes we finished at midnight and we never felt being rushed when it was getting close to the end as guests were still rocking it at the dance floor until the DJ had to announce the last song.
Will highly recommend Colwick Hall for the beautiful place it is which is very well complimented by the excellent, attentive and professional staff!!
From Daisy & Tom

Hello again. I stayed in the Mozart room if that is any help to you. It is a superior room decorated in blue with cream furniture. Not sure of the room number. Would be an ideal room for a romantic break.
