Newly refurbished Mercure Oxford Hawkwell House Hotel, inspired by Oxford style vintage fashion with a décor based on the Oxford brogue and Oxford collar which is illustrated throughout the hotel. The main hotel was the birthplace of explorer and polar medallist, Francis Howard Bickerton born in 1889. The hotel's restaurant and bar is named in his honour ‘Frank's at Hawkwell House.’ Offering a locally inspired menu with signature dishes such as Baked Alaska, our Head Chef has infused his creations with a focus on local ingredients. Elm House, a 15 bedroom annexe in the hotel grounds was the former home to Major George W Allen, pioneer motorist, pilot and aerial photographer. The hotel is surrounded by landscaped gardens with a terrace perfect for al fresco dining, BBQs, social gatherings and weddings. All 62 designed bedrooms are locally inspired by Oxford fashion from days gone by. Refurbished meetings and events facilities in our Thames Suite offer a tranquil setting. Located in the picturesque village of Iffley, only 2 miles from Oxford city centre.

A very pleasant visit, welcomed by a polite, attentive and informative receptionist. I stayed for 2 nights with my partner. I found the location to be perfect with only a 10-15 minute drive into Oxford city centre. If you’re arriving by car, there are plenty of parking spaces which won’t be a problem. Should you require any public transport information, the receptionist(s) would be more than happy to get the information you need. We had booked a privilege room with a king sized bed, which I could not fault. It comes with a Nespresso coffee machine with 4 complimentary pods per day, both normal and decaf (2 of each) Large flat screen tv, 100% wool bed throw , a lovely bathroom with a rain shower, mini fridge with liquid refreshments followed by a warm and cosy setting of lighting. As you’d expect in any hotel, complimentary shower gel, soaps etc was included, which both smelt pleasant. The room aside, the bar area had a warm and cosy feel also with a friendly barmaid. Separate to the bar area you have a lounge with a fire place. Buffet breakfast is £14.95 if you don’t have this inclusive to the room upon booking. It was worth the price, even as a vegetarian. However, the vegetarian sausages were not great. I’d recommend a suggestion of offering Quorn sausages or of similar sort, as the sausages provided were actual vegetables in a sausage shape. That aside, everything else was very tasty with various breakfast options to choose from. The only bad thing I have taken away from our visit was a large cobweb hiding behind the arm chair of room 114, which I happily informed the receptionist about on check out. Other than this, I could not fault the cleanliness of the room and hotel as a whole. If you’re thinking about booking this hotel, it is worth it.

Dear Ryan, Thank you very much for your kind review following your recent stay at the Mercure Hawkwell House Hotel. I have spoken with the team and your lovely words are really appreciated and a huge morale boost to the team. I was pleased to note that you had enjoyed the new renovated bedrooms and the tranquility of Iffley Village, just a short walk from the city centre We are re-looking at our breakfast selection and presentation, and yes I have taken on board your concerns on the quality of the vegetarian sausage, I have requested that the chef looks at other smaples. We trust you had a safe journey home and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Kind regards Peter Peter Watt General Manager

This is a little gem of a hotel! perfect location with only a 10 minute drive in to the centre of oxford and free parking on the premises. Welcomed by very helpful reception staff who were happy to help with anything, rooms were beautiful and modern and such good value at the price we paid of £91 for the night. The highlight of our stay was the breakfast which we added on when we checked in for £10 each which was more than worth it! Wonderful lady at breakfast who took our order and showed us everything clearly, she’s a credit to the hotel (short blonde hair)! Hot cooked breakfast which was delicious and continental was also available.

The hotel bar is lovely for a drink and also has an outside seating terrace which would be fab in the summer! Overall 10/10 stay!

Dear Noble K19 Thank you so much for your kind review, really appreciated and a great morale boost for the team, who i noted made you feel very welcome from the minute you walked through the front door. Oxford is a wonderful city, full of history and the gateway to the Cotswolds, we are ideally situated in the quiet village of Iffley, a 10 minute bus ride or a 30/40 minute walk along the embankment of the River Thames in to the city centre. i am pleased to note that Wendy looked after you, a true ambassador for the hotel and a dream when you arrive for breakfast, she is a huge asset and leader in the team. We do hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the near future. Kind regards Peter Peter Watt General Manager

I booked this hotel from reading other reviews and the ease of catching a bus into Oxford city centre and we’re generally fans of the Mercure brand.

Stayed with my husband for 2 nights at the beginning of August 2021 and we found it a charming hotel with lots of character, we understand it has recently been refurbished and it shows, the decor was well thought out and unique and suited the age of the building.

The staff were all friendly and welcoming, our favourite was a lady at breakfast (short, white spikey hair) who gave us advice as to what to see and where to go on our first morning and was kind enough to ask us about our day when she saw us on our second morning. She is an absolute asset to the hotel

Our room had a few maintenance issues which I pointed out to reception upon leaving but that in no way spoiled our stay. We had a massive bed, could open the full length balconette windows on the side of the house to let light and air in and we were provided with bath robes, slippers and a fridge with complimentary soft drinks.

The only other (minor) thing we found a problem was that the toilet was badly placed. It was set back and very close to a side wall. So close that you couldn’t sit on it properly (I’m a 14 so not huge) and had to sort of perch across to the left so the corner of the wall didn’t dig into you. And because it was set back, besides the corner digging into you, you had to be Mr Tickle to get at the toilet roll on the front bit. Photo probably helps explain it better. While being placed, there would’ve been room to move it more towards the sink but now it’s in place I doubt they can rectify it. Just a case of bad planning

If you want to visit Oxford and just dump your car - this is the perfect hotel. It was easy enough to find off the motorway, and there’s a local bus service only a few minutes walk away that takes you right into the centre of Oxford (cost us £7.55 for two adult return tickets) and they arrive every 10 or 15 minutes so you never have long to wait. Ironically, while on our first day in Oxford we went on a pleasure boat on the Thames that actually took us to Iffley Lock before returning to the city. Iffley Lock is just down the hill from the hotel and there’s a tow path for anyone who fancies walking into the city (or riding a bike). They’re a dog friendly hotel for anyone wishing to take one

On the first evening we sat on the patio at the bar and they have individual patio heaters for use when it gets a bit chilly. We ate at the hotel on our second evening and the food and drink prices are in no way extortionate. The vegetarian spaghetti was lovely.

If we visit Oxford again, we would definitely return and would recommend this hotel to all my friends and family. It’s in a very quiet location and a hidden gem.

Dear Karen D Thank you very much for your kind review, following your recent visit to the Mercure Oxford Hawkwell House Hotel. I was pleased to note that you appreciated the theme of Oxford Fashion throughout the hotel, it is totally different and a change from a lot of the hotels based in the city centre in amongst all the various colleges relating to the university. The Oxford Blue and fashion is a key part of Oxford history - the Oxford Brogue, The Oxford Bagges, Collar and Shirt - all made in the city and surrounding villages. I have passed on your kind words to the team, especially Wendy on breakfast, who has been an absolute star since the day she started - really appreciated and a massive morale boost top them all. Thank you for your constructive comments on the design of the toilet, I have passed your concerns onto the designer and the builder, for future changes. In closing I wish to thank you for your letter, we look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future. We trust you had a safe journey home. With kind regards Peter

We came on a 2 night birthday break and were expecting a 4* property! The superior room was fine, good size with a very comfortable bed. There were no instructions on how to operate the TV using the 2 remotes and we had to get somebody up to set it up, even he had difficulty. We looked at the dinner menu in our room and it didn't look that exciting but quite expected to have daily specials available. We went down at 7.15 and were told that we would be eating in the bar area. The 5 tables in the bar were all being used and we were taken to "the dining room" which is a like a motorway service area café. Lots of wooden tables and chairs no tablecloths with zero atmosphere. We declined and went to the Tree Hotel down the road and had a very nice and welcoming English meal in a very pleasant restaurant with table clothes etc. In fact we went back the next evening and had an even better Indian meal in the restaurant. Breakfast at the Hawkwell was not much better. The fried eggs were like rubber the toaster didn't work and again we were the only people in the restaurant. The second morning was slightly better and they did on request cook new eggs and eventually sorted the toaster out. A coach load of Chinese tourists had stayed the night and I guess the hotel is set up for these tourists. I would not recommend it for a romantic stay.

I am very sorry for your disappointment, please be assured that your concerns are being addressed and in my personal letter to yourself following your individual e-mail I have apologised and expressed my personal concerns along with renovation programme and review of the hotel following the change in the management of the hotel at the beginning of the year. The hotel is now managed by Accor Hotels and we are in the process of finalising the start date for the renovation of the hotel bedrooms along with a number of the public areas, which we plan to complete by August / September this year. We stayed two nights at the Hawkwell on our way to visit family. The hotel reopened in June 2021 with beautifully redesigned interiors inspired by the Oxford shirt and Oxford Brogue. Our room was very comfortable and clean with quirky design features such as wooden Brogue coat hooks and lampshades made from shirt cuffs. The hotel is located in a quiet part of Oxford and within a lovely 30 minute walk along the Thames or a short taxi ride into Oxford. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Would recommend this hotel for a stay in Oxford.

I stayed there with my husband for 2 nights. The hotel is really nice, smart and spotlessly clean. Our twin room was large, comfortable and again spotlessly clean. It had an enormous tv and a bath and shower.
The bar/restaurant area is well laid out and comfortable and the food was delicious. However the menu wasn’t very exciting and we were a little hard pressed to choose by the second night, as mostly everything came with chips, so chips with lunch and chips with dinner! A lunchtime sandwich/salad menu would have been nice. We bought sandwiches back from Oxford for lunch on the second day. Also, the food and drinks menus were photocopied sheets, which were well used. It really didn’t fit with the style of the hotel and would have been so much nicer in a folder, or even on card and replaced each day.
The wifi was amazing and free throughout the hotel - I’ve never had such good wifi at a hotel. There was plenty of free parking and the hotel grounds were lovely.
Definitely an ideal hotel to stay for a trip to Oxford. There were local bus stops a five minute walk away, the buses were frequent and took you right into the centre of Oxford in about 10-15 minutes. Park and ride was approx ten minutes away.

Have visited Hawkswell House 3 times now and prior to the Mercure take over, it was a nice, warm and friendly hotel. We visted in the late 90s and 2000s when it was relatively new. One good point is that the staff are friendly but can only do what they can with what they have been given. On arrival, we were allocated a room in the remote accommodation. No problem with that, it had parking right at the door and was on the ground floor so all good so far. However, on opening the room door, the gust of freezing air nearly took our breath away. The room was absolutely frozen. Big room with high ceilings and a bay window. There was a small plug in portable radiator sitting there just outside the bathroom door. Clearly we were not the only people to have been cold in there. We had to use this very inadequate radiator between the bathroom (probably note very safe) and the bedroom in order to try and heat one or the other, both was not an option! There was a towel rail in the bathroom, but the therms it pumped out were never going to head the large tiled room. There was aircon in the bedroom, but it heated the room for five minutes and when you could not suffer the drying effects and put it off, the room returned to its refrigerator self within minutes. We stayed out as much as possible and had to pluck up courage to have a shower. That was a fall about as the soap and shampoo dispensers were installed at the far end of the room wide shower so you got some of your daily steps in just trying to get soapy. the room was nicely decorated but very much design over practicality. We had a big wall with nothing on it and a 14" wardrobe with 4 coat hangers! They really should have put the design people in a cupboard and let the ergonomic guys get on with creating a functional room. Really disappointed to see the hotel like this and will not return.

The family room was great, having been recently refurbished. The hotel would have got top marks, had the room cleaner replenished the toiletries and biscuits in the room. The other negative point was that there were no electric car chargers available.

Dear Mr Patel, Thank you for your recent review regarding your stay at the Mercure Oxford Hawkwell House Hotel. The hotel has only just been open a month and although I have managed to re-employ a number of my old team, it has been a struggle as most of them have not been at work for the last 15 months. We have almost completed a total refurbishment of the whole hotel and grounds, just a couple of more weeks and we will see the builders depart. I do apologise for any shortcomings you may have encountered during your stay, we have some challenges - a major one in the hospitality industry is the availability of staff and their skills, sorry. With reference to the use of an external plug to charge your car, I do apologise I am afraid I was away from the business due to a family event however I have spoken to my colleagues to ensure that we do assist the guests with the charging of their electrical cars. Thank you again for sharing your experience, and we trust you had a safe journey home. Yours sincerely, Peter Watt General Manager

Although not in the city centre, this is an excellent option for visiting. It has easy access by car and plenty of parking. There is an excellent bus service into Oxford (the 3/3A service) within 5 minutes of the hotel and you can easily amble to the city centre along the Thames towpath in an hour. Iffley has a village feel despite being part of greater Oxford and is very quiet.

The hotel has been recently renovated (June 2021) and was well appointed, very comfortable - and had excellent aircon in the room we were in (which was much appreciated given the extreme heat when we were there). Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice - including gluten free options.

We will definitely stay again.

A great stay in a newly refurbished hotel. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The breakfast is superb. There is a well stocked bar at reasonable prices with a good choice of bar food available. The rooms are big ace airy and the hotel is ideally situated for access to the city centre on a 10/15 minute bus ride.

I don't think so. We had two rooms, and one of them had a skylight, and as I recall it was below the natural ground level and the window looked out onto a well, which allowed plenty of indirect natural light but no view. The skylight was actually a feature and flooded the room with sunlight. If you expect to spend a lot of time in your room and want to be sure of a view this could be a problem, and my suggestion would be to specifically ask for a room with a view if this is a concern.

Heather, The nearest bus stop is at the junction of Iffley Road and Iffley Turn, about five minutes walk from the hotel. The bus I took to the centre of Oxford was numbered 3 but 3a also works. The journey by bus is about 10 minutes depending on traffic conditions. (If you call up the Postcode for the hotel on Google Earth, you can draw down the figure and follow the actual walking and bus route from the hotel to the bus stop and the bus stop into Oxford).
