Travellers' Choice
The Bear & Ragged Staff in Cumnor is a world away from the Newbury & Swindon roads that stream past only a mile from its door. The heart of the pub is a glorious Tudor beauty. Ancient fireplaces, flagstone floors and mullioned windows with carved lintels, make the bar one of the finest anywhere. A comfortable eatery, conservatory and South-facing terrace provide spaces for every mood – and winding stairs lead to cosy bedrooms with old oak doorways & beamed ceilings.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

From start to finish, our stay was perfect! Our room was clean, spacious and full of character. The bedding, mattress and pillows were so comfortable. Even the soap, shampoo, conditioner and hand cream smelt divine! Staff were friendly and helpful. Dinner was delicious and breakfast in the morning was incredible. Would and will recommend to all - thank you to all the staff from Jude and Lea from sunny Devon

We saw this place had good reviews so booked a nights B&B plus dinner for the evening. It was superb from start to finish. We were greeted by a friendly manager and shown to a delightful character room, which oozed charm. The bar area was inviting with fine ales and wine, plus an open fire. Dinner was delicious and the service excellent. In the morning the breakfast was equally as good. Me and The Wife often go away for overnight stays but this was the best we’ve experienced by a country mile. 100% recommended.

Visited Thornbury Golf Centre today with friends for a Christmas bash. We played the par 3 course (12 holes open due to the very wet conditions) had a putting competition on the very good practice putting green and had an excellent lunch. The Golf Centre has a main 18 hole course, an 18 hole par 3 course and an excellent driving range equipped with a screen on each bay to track your shots. You can even play some of the world's famous courses on screen if you wish. Staff are on hand to help you set up and also take orders for drinks and food if required. The golf shop is very well stocked with clubs, clothing and pretty much every golfing accessory you might need. The highlight was however lunch with a very good menu and we were extremely well looked after by Liv (short for Olivia). She really is a great asset to the establishment as she is very friendly, very efficient and goes well beyond the type of service normally expected and she also made us all laugh.

This place is a gem. The hotel oozes history and our room above the pub was gorgeous, up a twisty staircase and so atmospheric. It was very cosy and comfortable and the bathroom was luxurious. Staff were so friendly and the food for both dinner and breakfast was amazing.

Visiting Oxford on the way back to East Sussex and stopped at this pub through a recommendation and wow what a amazing find. The pub staff were welcoming and the food Choice was brilliant. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. We had a couple of dishes from the small plates and then had the pie and the chicken dish both hot and lovely flavors

This is a fantastic little hotel! We had initially said we would arrive at 3pm but turned up at 10am to let the management know we were in the area. We then went to the park and ride and took ourselves off for a lovely day wandering around Oxford. We planned to go back to the hotel for a quick shower before returning to Oxford for dinner but on seeing the restaurant and menu decided just to dine there. We weren't disappointed. Our room (5) was great and beautifully warm. Hope to return.

I had the best meal I've eaten since I left Australia a month ago. Terrific local produce, bright green vegetables and a crisp lettuce side salad. Food aside ... the accommodation was great and the staff super helpful and friendly. The location is excellent with a bus down the road for an easy trip into Oxford and I was able to enjoy a delightful 1.5 hour round trip walk in the countryside. The bed was comfortable and the bath luxurious. Overall, a fabulous stay. Would definitely stay here again.
