I stayed here on a bit of a whim across a weekend, and with my Accor points, it went from being a bargain to a complete steal.

The hotel itself is in a decent location, a few minutes stroll from Reading station. It's a beautiful old building, a little bit muddled up (and I did end up lost in the corridors a couple of times) but it was certainly quirky in a good way.

Service was exactly as one would expect, the usual Silver member perks being delivered without prompt (free drink and fast WiFi), and with a smile, so no issues there.

The room was a decent size, well appointed, and the bathroom was kept clean. I have read some issues about noise but honestly provided that you keep the window shut at night, there's little to be heard. I slept well on both nights as a result.

Overall, a fabulous stay at a day's notice, and one I'd certainly revisit!
Thank Richard G

This historic hotel is hidden away in the centre of Reading only a short stroll from the railway station. On arrival I was greeted by friendly welcoming staff and soon on the way too my room the hotel is a bit of a maze and on varying levels throughout the hotel but to years of additions the rooms are small but have all facilities I required the breakfast was satisfactory and hotel food was adequate although the hotel is associated with an India restaurant round the corner (The Royal Tandoori) and I was able to use my food allowance there and that was amazing see my review. Back to the hotel. It was clean with a really comfy bed what else do you need.

I really enjoyed my two-day stay here, which was unplanned owing to rail travel problems to the Westcountry, I was charged £45 per night for a single room, which was very reasonable. This is a Tudor coaching inn, with a half-timbered frontage, an ancient, atmospheric little enclosed yard to eat and drink in, twisty staircases, etc. It is brilliantly positioned in Reading right next to all the shops and restaurants, and, if you like a beer, opposite the excellent Ale House micropub. It might not be the closest hotel to the station, but it is still very near, and its rivals are dull, anonymous, and soulless by comparison. My room was fine. Yes, it was over the courtyard, which can be a little noisy, but it's a quaint view. It was a bit hot in the room, considering it was October and I had the window open and was sleeping on top of the cover--but I still had a good sleep. The room was clean and the bath ran true. Couldn't get cold water to drink from the cold taps, though--it was somewhat warm. Bianca on the desk is an utter gem (Mercure, you have a great employee here, cherish your asset!), who makes you feel like a welcome guest.

-Friendly, efficient and helpful

-Its a city center hotel with a great location , but note this hotel is very old so expect lots of stairs and no straight lines anywhere ..

- Avoid room 412 !!!!
- Hotel room was well equipped, very strange that the bathroom was larger than the bedroom, however but was extremely hot all night, no air conditioning .
-There was a fan provided but that was not sufficient.
- Windows did not open enough to provide sufficient ventilation , in the evening outside temperature was 12 Deg C but the room was over 30 Deg !
-There was running water noise all night from what appeared to be a constantly flushing faulty toilet in floor above.
-The room backed onto the courtyard which was very noisy, especially at 5am when someone was making an early delivery.

-Very good and service excellent

Everything about this hotel was old. It was like being back in the early 1990s. The bathroom was tiny and had been partially refurbished, but there were large patches of rust on the bath fittings - not nice. Plus someone else's hairs on the tiles.

The room was similarly old and tired, with an empty fridge (no complimentary water) that didn't shut properly.

The bar was similarly archaic, with ancient carpet, chairs and tables.

Given the price, which was £170 for a night, this was definitely not worth it.
