We came to Ironbridge for the day on Saturday and had a drink in the outside space at The Malthouse. We were very impressed with the service that was provided in these challenging times, all tables were cleaned down when the customers had left, the staff were very friendly, and it felt a safe space to be in and if we hadn't brought a picnic we would have had some food as the menu looked lovely. It has given us the confidence to go back to pubs and restaurants again and we will definitely visit again and have some food next time.

Just stayed 2 nights at The Malthouse Ironbridge. Very friendly staff and very helpfull. The evening meal was as expected and prices average for pub meal. The service good and atmosphere also good. Unfortunately the room,we stayed in the Blue room was not very light at night only one ceiling light over one part of the room. The bathroom was clean as was the bedding but unfortunately under bed and draws very dusty and the floor dusty(no carpets). Breakfast was the most disappointing as there was no cerals or fruit juices and only got offered one coffee had to ask for a second one. When our full English breakfast arrived the toast was on the breakfast plate and already had been buttered. We were not asked if we wanted white or brown toast either. It really was very disappointing.

We booked a table at the malthouse as we live in Coalbrookdale and wanted somewhere walking distance, I will admit I was a little bit dubious after reading some reviews and some friends warned me not to come, but I'm glad we did as I wanted to try it for myself. We were seated within minutes of arriving and our drink order was taken as soon as we sat down and was brought to the table within minutes. food order taken promptly and our food came out within a perfect time and both meals were amazing, my husband had the mixed grill and he loved it especially the steak!! We both had pudding which was just as yummy as the main!!
My only critic was that when we came to pay the I asked the waitress to add an additional sum as a tip but apparently this could not be done on the card machine and as neither of us was carrying cash we couldn't tip. I myself work in the pub/restaurant trade and feel that this should be addressed so the staff who work hard can get that little extra reward that they earn for great service

We visited on Christmas Day and there were 3 in the party. At £70 per head we were bitterly disappointed at the food offering and all agreed that it was no better than carvery quality but served at the table.

FOOD

The starter (Venison & Black pudding scotch egg) sounded lovely but it was really horrible. It was huge and tough as old boots due to being overcooked. The size was completely off-putting and I defy anyone to eat a fraction of it without being full after one course.

The turkey main course was ok and reasonable but for £70 a little more than ‘ok’ was expected.

The dessert (we had the choc and orange tart) was far too chilled and you could not get a fork through it.

PLACE

The location of the Malthouse is great. The redecoration looks tidy enough but there were so few decorations you would hardly know it was Christmas. They have a huge inglenook fireplace with no attempt to hang a garland or dress it at all. It was also far too light and had no ambience. The place was completely lacking in atmosphere at all. We all said that it would take about 3 mins to remove the couple of pieces of tinsel that were draped over picture frames when Christmas was over. It was so disappointing and felt as though a Christmas Day Lunch was offered for profit only and with no effort made to ensure that diners had a nice day.

STAFF

There were not many staff on at all. The two ladies that were serving were very pleasant (as was the young man behind the bar) but they are all very young and I am sure have to put up with a lot of complaints due to the lack of any obvious Management staff.

We have used the Malthouse for years and this latest change of ownership is not an improvement on the previous owners. The place used to be painted in a dark red (not everyone’s choice) but it made the place feel cosy and was in keeping with the age of the building and its quirky nature.

Really needs management who are more visible and hands-on to whip this place back into shape. If you are going to cater for Christmas and New Year, put in some effort both in enthusiasm, quality and decoration.

Would also be nice to see some responses from the management to the Trip Advisor reviews left over the last few months.

I did not attempt to take pictures of the Xmas decorations because there weren’t any!

After my stay i was left disappointed. I stayed in room ‘turquoise’ had quirky decor but was filthy dirty, small and cold. Along with this the room didn't have an en suite meaning my partner and i had to go across the hallway to use a bathroom! There was soap stains/ limescale all over the bathroom with the glasses provided dirty, we were left with half a roll of toilet roll and no extra.

My parents who were also staying at the malthouse had to be moved to another hotel in the area due a boiler explosion which they were informed of at check in. Nobody contacted them beforehand to inform them of this and the staff didn't seem to be bothered about our experience despite paying over £90 for a nights stay.

I pre booked a meal for 14 people on 29/12 for 4.30pm for the malthouse to then phone me up at 11.30 on 31/12 (day of my stay) to inform me everyone needs to pre order their meal for that evening! This added alot of stress to my day and i believe i should have been told this in advance. Although pre-booked we ended up waiting 45 minutes for our food once seating ourselves with no communication from staff.

However the food was lovely once arrived and there were no issues.

The entertainment provided on the evening of new year was great and was in a great location to explore ironbridge! However i wouldnt stay at this hotel again.

Pro -
Great staff, friendly and helpful.

Cons -
No Parking. If you are a motorist, and let's face it most people coming to Ironbridge are, you are not going to be able to park. They have replaced all of their parking with about 6 benches out front. This makes it incredibly difficult to get luggage to and from your room. We ended up parking on the pay and display near the museum of the gorge. This meant we had to keep an eye on parking times! They say you can park on the Swan car park or the bakery next door but in reality there are only around half a dozen spaces for three venues so there are no spaces!
It was incredibly noisey from music in the bar below until after midnight so you get no sleep.
The bed springs were uncomfortable and the bed is a small double, even in their "superior" room so you constantly wake to find yourself on the edge of the bed!
Small things like they can't be bothered to maintain the door locks so every door is a chore to get through.
The shower is large but the entire on-suite is obviously a poorly thought out after thought. The toilet is crammed into the corner and the sink is tiny and not fit for purpose!
The bedroom floors squeak more than the bed springs and the TV remote is broken and unresponsive.
They describe the decor as "kitch", I call it dated, tired and in need of complete renovation. The floor is bare with an old cow hide thrown on it, there is no proper wardrobe, the dresser has handles missing and the sink in the bathroom has peeling veneer.
Finally, it took them FORTY SIX minutes to bring our breakfast from time we ordered it, by which time I was worrying about the car park ticket!!

First of all, Id like to say this hotel is in a great position and its vista and outlook is super.
The review is in two parts as a restaurant, it is both poorly run with a tiny selection different to the website. I wanted lamb had to have steak? Small portions, took an eternity to arrive at table.
Stayed one night, never really understood why we couldn’t book in earlier than 2pm, just abruptly told?
Shown to room, which unbeknown to us was a tacky pink colour with cheap furniture, asked for fan , was quite warm, told the window opens? Lots of noise from gardens and street , main road outside.
Two pillows, asked for another couple after twice asking an hour later came, flat as a pancake and with a metal bedstead were inadequate. Shower was boiling and could not regulate.
Breakfast in the morning was a shambles no-one to explain process? Help yourself ? Table service, waited 15 minutes and people from outside walk ins served before us?
No orange juice , milk until asked , saving grace cooked breakfast was well cooked and tasty!
Food 10/ 10 experience2/10 only 5 other tables were being served hardly rushed.

So to conclude, nice vista, terrible service, rooms one star at best...breakfast well cooked and sourced...

The food was terrible but the ultimate reason why I'm leaving a review is the shocking customer service by the staff, literally did not care when we spoke to them about the food quality. Shocking, training needed for the disengaged staff !!

Arrived and their was a wedding on outside and we were told that we were not allowed food.

We stated this was fine we would just have drinks.

We went to the bar and the bar lady straight from the off lady was short and when asked to repeat what drinks were available she huffed, we thought never mind lefts just go outside.

After sitting down 20 minutes we were then asked if we liked food, then we could do now but we'd need to order at the bar. We then decided to do so.

We both had fish & chips. Fairly standard pub food we were thinking on a nice day outside.
We also ordered two sides, onion rings and garlic bread.

The food arrived and it was a good portion size was good, however it was clear that the 'home-cooked' chips were in fact massive wedges that were massively undercooked - literally rock hard in the middle - 75% of them could not be eaten.

The fish and onion rings were literally dripping with fat, the onion rings were swimming in the bowl they arrived in.

I ate half of the fish which was littered with bones and one onion ring, I then felt quite sick due to the fat content. I know it's deep fried but this was soaking wet in fat.

We then waited ages for a staff member to come and see whether we were happy with the food, we understand that they were busy there was a wedding party but it was them who approached us about the food.

No one staff member came to us for over 45 minutes after we had finished our food.

We then called over the lad who was front of house outside to say we had finished. He then asked 'everything OK guys'

We told him our exact issued as stated above, his response was 'sorry about that guys'

So we then reiterated what we had said and emphasised that the food was not edible.
To our shock, he then repeated himself with 'sorry about that guys' and proceeded to collect the plates and simply walked off.
We waited a few minutes to see if he was going to get anyone but he never did.

As I have made clear in the beginning, this shocking customer service is what we have received so we have had to leave a review because what more do you do if you have reported it to a staff member??

We live local and love ironbridge but this crap standard is simple not good enough in such a competitive area.
Hopefully the manager reads this and takes note, if not then its simple rotton from the top to the bottom in regards to customer appreciation.

Reading some of the other reviews it's clear quality isn't a priority but we would not be leaving this review if it was handled correctly when we were asked for our feedback.
Your also charging competitive prices which definitely isn't reflected in your food quality & customer service, hope I'm wrong but the impression feels as though its rife with complacency thst the location will bring the customers & the quality & customer service 'will be what it will be'

Really annoyed and let down by the whole experience over something which should have been straight forward.

We booked the hotel as it listed on site parking. When we arrived we found the car park full of tables due to Covid 19. While we understood this it would have been nice to have been told. We were advised that the nearby public car park was free of charge but unfortunately we found to our cost that this was not correct. We spend some time moving the car around which was not the stress free experience we had hoped for.
We stayed in the Gold room and found the bed hard and lumpy with the pair of us rolling together so we sadly didn’t sleep that well.
We also booked a table for Wednesday night for dinner. We were told that the restaurant was fully staffed so surprised to be informed that there was a wait of 45 minutes for food. Our main course arrived 90 minutes after ordering and to rub salt in the wound it was not was I had ordered. My partner ordered steak and a steak knife was delivered to the table as he was finishing his meal.
On a positive note, the staff are friendly and the breakfast is fantastic and the location is great

They seem to regard hotel guests as an inconvenience. They state there is on-site parking. Well there is but it is at another hotel! What they have done is dispensed with their parking for outdoor tables and fairy lights so emphasising their interest in diners rather than hotel guests. There is free parking for 40 minutes from 6pm to 8am opposite, so you can wolf down breakfast and use it but if you have limited mobility and arrive outside these times you are on your own.
The room I had was a little shabby and the bedside light needed a bulb andin the ensuite the shower water did not soak away so stagnant water swirled around my feet. I reported this and the hotel did absolutely nothing. No light bulb and stinky shower until the end of my stay!
I had continued problems with the keys to the external door as well as my room, which wasn't helped by the night staff double locking the outside door! Yes hotel guests are a nuisance aren't they!
Breakfast was a limited set menu, either a fry up as huge english breakfast/ sandwich or a small bowel of porridge or 3 pancakes and was presented as a fait accompli. This is it. Fruit or fruit juice...we don't do that sort of thing...
The location of the Malthouse is riverside and it attracts evening drinkers and diners who seem to find the menu which mentions sourdough a lot...alluring. All in all though having hotel guests is really too much trouble for this establishment

Hi Do you mean does Ironbridge have any other pubs? If so yes, there are plenty of places to eat. You can also pack a picnic and eat on the riverside if the weather is nice. Take a rug to sit on. Faith
