We eventually got to stay over after 15 months of covid interruption and it was more than worth the wait. The hotel is situated in the heart of the town opposite a most intriguing indoor market that you can spend half a day exploring. We left our case and went to explore the town but not before enjoying a delicious real ale outside in the warm sunshine. Service was polite, correct and courteous and really really friendly. Upon returning we were taken to our room which looked onto the town centre and it had everything needed including iron, fan, a generous selection of hot drinks and a bath which I filled with bubbles and left the wife soaking while I went to the bar to watch England beat Germany. Perfect and even better with a few more scoops of Shropshire Ale. The pub is situated just a stones throw from the Dingle where you can walk through the gardens then down to the river at your leisure. Its a character pub with open house to folk of all ages and tastes and the staff are superb. Dinner was a set menu as we had a travelzoo voucher but the manager allowed some access to the main menu for only a slight mark up so I enjoyed the most perfect fillet steak, cooked to perfection and followed by a sticky toffee pudding to die for. Service was exceptional and ultra friendly and we really felt welcome. After cocktails we were ready for bed and slept brilliantly despite the celebrating going on around the main street after the England win. For light sleepers they even supply ear plugs but these were not needed as the bed was super comfy. Next morning after a hot shower we went down for breakfast which more than set us up for the day. Full English for me and Salmon/eggs benedict for the better half all served with a friendly chat and some advice on where to spend the morning. The hotel is vibrant yet full of character. It attracts young and old alike and caters for both with ease. It is clean, inviting and relaxing. What more can you ask for a one day stop over in this marvellous Shropshire town.

We stayed at the Loopy Shrew for two nights. On arrival we were warmly greeted and left out bags as it was too early to access our rooms. On returning we were shown to our rooms. Our room was spacious but felt cold. The radiator was on high but it was inadequate to make the room comfortable. We asked for an additional room heater but none was made available. There were lights that were not working. The bathroom had a shower curtain that had mildew and also around the window. Our room was above the bar and a lively atmosphere could be heard until midnight. There were too few sockets and none by the bed. As another reviewer found, there was the constant noise of a fan. This sounds very poor but our friends had a room that had none of our issues.
On a very positive note the dinner was excellent, so too were the breakfasts, all served by very attentive staff. The Loopy Shrew is clearly very popular and has a vibrant atmosphere. Would we choose to go back in the future, probably but would opt for a different room.

This hotel was recommended to us by a family member who had stayed there pre-covid. I can only assume that standards have dropped since their visit. With overseas travel being at risk, we have had a few short staycations in the UK since travel restrictions have been lifted. In all the hotels we have recently stayed at, the owners have taken the opportunity in the closed period to “freshen up” or decorate their hotels, but not the Loopy Shrew. When we were shown to our room our first impressions were “not the best, but OK for 3 nights”. It only had a hole in the slightly dirty armchair and only one of the curtain rails was hanging off.

But when we went into the dated bathroom, we found that the light over the mirror was not working and also one of the bulbs in the central light fitting was also not working (although not a requirement, good practice for a hotel, this should have been an IP44 fitting). Also, the extractor was not working making a damp and musty room. We told the hotel manager, not a complaint but a request for the lights to be fixed. The only bright light we had was a table lamp near the dressing table.
The lights were not fixed, so this time we complained to a staff member who parried the complaint by asking us to speak with the housekeepers, which we did. But when we returned to our room later in the day, we found that the bathroom lights were still not working but also the bulb had been removed from the table lamp, the only bright light in the two rooms! Although housekeeping had meant to have serviced our room, the drinks stains remained on the dressing table, also what I thought was a bubble in the surface of the dressing table, when I pressed it, turned out to be a discarded contact lens.

I again complained to the manager who told me he was waiting on a delivery of light bulbs. I bit my lip while I considered telling him that there was a Wilko 5 minutes’ walk away! But on this occasion there was a response. When we returned to our room it had been cleaned, new bulbs had been installed in the centre fitting in the bathroom, a new bulb had been fitted in the table lamp. A completely new light fitting had been installed over the mirror, but this did not work! Also, the extractor still didn’t work.

Later the manager returned to our room and left us a bottle of prosecco by way of an apology, a nice gesture but why didn’t this manager check the rooms prior to occupation and avoid all this upset?
It should be noted that the parking information in the hotel’s information book is incorrect, the number that they give for telephone parking is wrong.

Would I stay at the Loopy Shrew again? Not for a big clock. Avoid unless desperate for accommodation.

Upon checking in we were greeted by the manager. I think his name was Ian. He was a lovely guy very helpful and made time to sit and have a couple of minutes with us. I ordered a cocktail for my wife I think it was called a bramble. It was £8 and was literally a glass, completely full of crushed ice with no more than a thimble full of drink, literally two sips of the straw. It was gone a young lad who was waiting on came to take our next order. And I made the complaint about the bramble and he walked off halfway through, which was very annoying to say the least. We then went out for the rest of the evening and when we came back to our room, it was absolutely stifling hot with no heating on, so we open the windows and the hotel is what it is smack bang in the middle of a very busy town centre so we were kept awake all night with the local drunks, shouting and bawling outside. The rooms are extremely tired. Absolutely no amenities whatsoever and they are not what I would call budget prices between £170 and £250 depending on when you go. When we went for breakfast everybody seems in a mad rush, the waiters and waitresses don’t really listen to your requests when you are telling them what you want far too busy thinking about where they’re off to next so consequently my breakfast came wrong when I pointed it out the girl who took my original order just said I will go and get you another one no apology no feeling whatsoever by the time it came. I was ready to go and left it anyway. I genuinely don’t think I would ever return. I find it really strange that Shrewsbury is such a beautiful town, but has very very limited hotel of any quality the town is crying out for somewhere decent. I have tried quite a few of them and they have all been very poor. The one they all say is the best which was the prince Rupert. I have tried that twice and depending on which room you get will determine the quality of your stay. Some of the rooms are absolutely dreadful again, not cheap all in all if you don’t mind noise and you don’t mind being in a very hot room with no amenities and maybe you would find this place acceptable. The bar itself is really good and has a good vibe of the rooms or need at least £10,000 spending on them to bring them up to some kind of standard. At the moment. They are not much better than hostel rooms 4 out of 10

We have stayed here and the sister hotel many times in last 2 years. So my latest experience is doubly disappointing.
We usually stay for 1 or 2 nights on a prepaid d b and b basis.
This time we booked for 8 and arrived at the restaurant at 7.50 pm. Shown to table ordered wine and looked at menu. 20 mins later we had to get someone to take our order. Ok busy night we thought let's look forward to the meal
Starter arrived then plates taken away that was last time we saw anybody until 9.20 pm when I asked to see manager. Up to then no one came to table to apologise or explain delay even though food arriving at other tables.
By now we didn't want the meal, told the manager too late to eat and then our meal arrived. That made no difference, we confirmed we had no appetite, our evening was ruined. We were offered a glass of wine on the house as apology and told bill would be 'adjusted.'
We accepted the wine then went to our room.
At checkout we found out the 'adjustment ' was to remove bottle of wine off bill (£19.95), there would be no further adjustment and as we had received almost 2 bottles of wine free in total it was more than enough compensation.
So...I have paid for 2 set menu dinners at £25 each in advance and am supposed to be 'satisfied' with the outcome.
Hence I have paid for my 'compensation' and more so!
Having spent £100s with the group and every intention of continuing to do so, a quick profit on the night is far more important than good customer relationships.

They asked if they could transfer our booking from Darwin's Kitchen - so I checked the current price of the Loopy Shrew and it came up as £79. They wanted to charge us the original £150, so I complained and they offered a couple of bottles of wine as they could not change the price on their system!!

Nice enough room but the bathroom had the most disgusting smell of sewage coming up though the pipes.
A good rinse with copious amounts of water, many flushing of the loo and it improved but was terrible again by morning.
Our travel companions found their mattress was so old, that the springs were coming through.
Food was the saving grace, nice dinner and excellent breakfast.

If not the world . . . . 50 minutes for a cup of tea and then breakfast delivered without cutlery and butter! don’t worry they only took another 5 minutes to deliver butter and cutlery 👎

Not worth the wait, not worth the cost

For a bar with this reputation I am disappointed

Went here on Sunday for Afternoon Tea .. bought for us as a gift. No one Front of House so we went to the bar. 2 people serving there who did not look at us or acknowledge us in any way so I went around the corner to the restaurant area and eventually got the attention of a waitress. We were shown to our table and asked if we wanted a drink. We said that we would just have the glass of Prosecco included in our voucher. She brought this followed by the Afternoon Tea tray.. no pot of tea to go with it .. we waited a while and then asked if we could have some tea which she then brought. A tray of 3 small pretty stale tasting sandwiches ( didn’t expect more but expected nicer ) . 2 scones which were slightly warm which I suspect was because they had been flashed in the microwave to freshen them up. They said they were homemade but not great and A more lacklustre selection of bite size cakes I have never seen.
Some people around us were having a Sunday Roast which did look quite nice . A LOT of work needed on the Afternoon Tea ... not worth £40 which we would have had to pay if we hadn’t and the voucher

So date night came around for me and my husband. Child free! Woop! An hour to get ready and an hour drive in storm Dennis to get to the Loopy Shrew. We were seated upstairs in a cosy little area. Ordered our drinks, asked for a gin and lemonade but a tonic came instead. Aww well it’s date night I’ll get over it. Husband ordered a burger at £13.50 and I ordered “the kernel” a chicken dish at £16.
Mine arrived two small pieces of chicken two pieces of broccoli and some tiny bits of popcorn and my husbands huge burger came out. We asked the waitress if that was it as my meal seamed extremely tiny compared to my husbands. she came back up with some potato gratin and apologised. She was very lovely. We just thought it was strange his hearty meal and my small amount for a higher price! The waitress said she has spoken to the chef who had said the chicken was pricier because of “the quality of the dish and more preparation.” Surely the quality should be in every dish? Anyway it was tasty but my god I was starving still! She came with the dessert menu and we noticed we were missing some chilli nugget things from my meal, the waitress explained they had run out and it had been replaced with the potato thing. Puddings were fine - was it worth the £56 nope. Shame really as the waitress was lovely and the place itself was lovely.

Have included a photo of my chicken meal- that was it no chips nothing

You need to use one of the public car parks. Try the ones behind the Darwin Centre, not expensive and undercover which is handy when it chucks it down!
