We recently stayed for a couple of nights at Darwin's Townhouse. The accommodation is located by the River Severn in Shrewsbury with easy access from a nearby carpark and boasts a central location.
The accommodation was COVID-19 secure. Important at this time.
But, what more could you ask for in a UK staycation? Our room and en suite bathroom were spotlessly clean. Towels were fluffy and warmed by a heated rail. Our beds were extremely comfy with cotton bedlinen, comfy headboards and plump pillows. The rooms are all sensitively decorated with a lovely Darwinesque theme throughout. The communal areas are also decoratively interesting.
Our room had proper water glasses - most welcome! Also great coffee and tea. We had come in wet from the rain on a couple of occasions and a nice cuppa for a quick warm up was just lovely.
The breakfast is astoundingly good, Great menu from Full Shropshire cooked breakfast to fruit salad, yoghurt and pastries. The cooked breakfasts were cooked to perfection.
The Townhouse has a lovely garden which would be fabulous in summer months. Being October we appreciated the garden from the well lit conservatory were breakfast was served. Both garden and conservatory give a light and airy feel to the property. The garden adds value should the weather be such that you might want to take a drink from the honesty bar and enjoy some evening birdsong.
For Tracy and the staff nothing was too much trouble, we were looked after very well.
Highly recommended.

Beautiful building and attention to detail in the decor and rooms to reflect its history. We stayed on the first floor accessed by a steep bendy staircase full of interesting Darwin related features. A very friendly welcome awaited us and luggage stored until check in, our room was big enough for a couple of nights , light and airy with huge sash windows. Excellent breakfast in the pretty garden room with much to choose from to please all tastes , gorgeous fresh coffee, also appreciated the good quality coffee bags in the room. All rooms felt clean and fresh , COVID safe. Fabulous honesty bar in a beautiful room full of Georgian plasterwork designs.
We dined at the hotel’s restaurants in the town. The walking distances given may be accurate for younger visitors though, Loopy Shrew was the furthest away and offered a lovely bistro meal and great cocktails in the front of house bar area before our meal. Darwin’s Kitchen was lovely too although due to COVID staffing issues we were only offered a limited menu. Having been telephoned earlier to give us the chance to cancel our booking we’re glad we kept it. Simple but delicious sharing plates were on offer and once again, great cocktails in the quiet bar beforehand. Everyone in all the venues obviously are working very hard to give their guests the best holiday and it was much appreciated considering the difficulties they have endured in recent times. So glad we found this gem so close to all that Shrewsbury has to offer.

How can I have never been to Shrewsbury?! I’ve absolutely fallen for its architectural and culinary charms, due in no small part to the warm welcome that we received from the staff at Darwin’s Townhouse. This was our first post-lockdown trip and so we were nervous but everything is in order here. Room spotless, social distance, visors, wipes, gels all in place. We brought our dog with us (garden suite rooms only) and were served breakfast in the pretty walled garden and when rainy in the sitting room (no dogs in restaurant) The staff were genuinely interested in our well-being and comfort and the cook advised us to go up The Long Mynd which is an amazing (steep) walk with wild bilberries and sheep at the top. Gorgeous breakfasts. No wonder we were recommended to stay there. We will be back!

Very central smart place to stay .

I think we had the disabled room in the courtyard (wet room with handles) but goodness knows how you'd get a wheel chair in there without removing half the furniture...
Please invest in some more accessible plugs or adaptors. We had to plug in the kettle under the table and then choose between lamp or charger etc.
How would a disabled person use this room ?

Service at reception was strange. Why ask for a breakfast time when the first three times weren't available! - better to give me the choice of what you had left surely
vs saying no, no and no!

Service at breakfast was Excellent and the food really delicious - thank you.

We stayed in a garden room which was beautifully decorated and comfortable with great selection of complimentary teas and fresh coffees and a home made Shrewsbury biscuit each. Our room was quiet but within walking distance of the river and many restaurants and pubs. The honesty bar is an excellent facility with two elegant and comfortable lounges to sit in. Breakfast was served in the bright and airy conservatory. There was a wonderful selection of fresh fruit salad, home made cereals, pastries, juices etc and a wide selection of cooked breakfast options which could be mixed and matched. Vegetarian and vegans are well catered for.

We stayed here after an Emerald wedding anniversary lunch, which incidentally was excellent with wonderful food for all attending.
Though the rooms were small, they were very comfortable with comfortable beds and pillows. Plenty of storage space for clothes and lovely en-suite bathroom. In the morning we were served a delicious breakfast with cereals, pastries, yoghurts and an amazing fruit salad and fruit compote. This was followed by a huge selection of cooked breakfasts and ours were delicious. A tip, in winter turn down the heat when you arrive as you might find it too hot otherwise.
An ideal small hotel for an overnight stay near the centre of Shrewsbury.

We visited Darwin’s Townhouse on a Sunday in June, arriving at 3pm. Check in was extremely quick and easy and the staff were very friendly.
Our room (number 5) was absolutely beautiful. The decor was so lovely, the bed was enormous and very comfortable, the bathroom was spotless and the refreshments were more than enough with many types of tea and coffee to choose from and a bottle of fresh water.
There is an ‘honesty bar’ with a huge selection of drinks and a lovely garden or two lounges to sit and enjoy a drink in. The lounge had a variety of games such as chess, scrabble and monopoly.
Breakfast was in the conservatory and the selection of foods was fantastic. There were many cereals and pastries in the continental breakfast and a large menu to choose from for the cooked breakfast. Using qualify local ingredients everything was made fresh and tasted delicious.
The staff were very accommodating of my additional dietary needs and were happy to supply me with gluten free toast and soya milk as well as decaf coffee and switching out the cooked breakfast items for others to suit my taste.
The Townhouse is very close to the river and to the town centre and bars/restaurants. There is no ‘town noise’ though and it all felt very peaceful.
We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Shrewsbury.

We have recently stayed at Darwin's House with my sister and brother-in-law (all suitably socially distanced and masked) and the whole experience was a delight. Ann, Rachel, Jan and Ellie went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Covid rules were in place so no worries there. We stayed in a garden room which was smallish but very comfortable and had everything we needed. Breakfast was non-stop temptation (thank you, chef) and beautifully served with local products. In fact, everything was done with a smile. The hotel is very centrally placed and, again thanks to recommendations from the wonderful team, we ate extremely well (The Loopy Shrew, Darwin's Kitchen, The Armoury). I can honestly say that nothing was too much trouble and we came away feeling totally spoiled and very special. Thank you so much to you all for everything that you did for us (especially the Camparis!!!!)

We stayed here for one night with friends. We hadn't been to Shrewsbury before and the town is lovely. The B&B is perfectly placed for exploring the town.
We were both upgraded to superior rooms and I must say I would certainly pay the extra for one of these lovely extra large rooms next time we visit. We were also in the main house which was lovely. We found all the staff to be very helpful and friendly and we had an excellent breakfast.
Parking is just around the corner and not too expensive bearing in mind you are in the centre of a town.
We used the honesty bar and this for us made the stay extra special as we could sit in comfort, chatting and drinking with a homely feel. You just write down what you drink and settle up when you leave.
I'm sure we will be back.

Thank you so much to the staff at Darwin’s Townhouse for making my parents 50th wedding anniversary weekend so special. Rachel phoned me prior to our stay to explain the parking, places to eat and to offer my parents either a garden room or a different room as people are welcome to stay with dogs in the garden room. My mum has OCD, so instead the hotel arranged for them to stay in a lovely big room upstairs. The call was followed up by an email with all the details. So incredibly helpful. The decor in the hotel is absolutely wonderful and would delight any young children with all the model animals, fossils, etc on the main staircase. The single room I stayed in had some lovely touches, well stocked toiletries and a lovely clean and modern bathroom. Breakfast was absolutely fantastic with copious amounts of tea and lots of menu choices or you could opt for your own variation. My parents room was a very unusual octagonal room with a lovely fireplace, a dressing table and plenty of room. There was even a card for their wedding anniversary from the staff at the hotel, which was a really lovely touch. Rachel was there to greet us on our arrival and we were given a map of the town and an explanation of where to go as well as options for our breakfast slot. We had a lovely walk around the town but some sections of Shrewsbury town can involve a steep walk. The hotel is very close to the St Julian's Friars Car Park, which does charge. The hotel gave us the postcode for the car park and details of the charges. All in all this was a lovely and very personable hotel. The staff could not have been nicer and certainly looked after us before and during our stay. I’d definitely stay there again.
