Prominently placed at the very heart of Shrewsbury Cromwell`s Inn is an atmospheric example of a building of 17th/18th century England.

Staying with my wife for 3 nights we requested a quiet room and the hotel were quick to respond that it could be arranged but it would be a slightly smaller double and ensuite. In the event the room was situated at the rear of the hotel with a very comfortable double bed, two bedside tables and lamps, a chest of drawers and a wardrobe with plenty of space for clothes. However, due to the size constraint there was no space for a chair in which to relax. The ensuite (like the bedroom) was clean although we considered some updating i.e. minor works on the grouting and tiling was required. The lighting was good as was the general condition of paintwork in the bedroom and really a little touch-up work in one or two spots needed to complete the picture.
Currently the Inn boasts just 6 rooms and is also dog friendly.

We enjoyed dinner in the Lounge & Bar area on the first night - the menu being quite wide ranging and the meal itself met with our expectations. Likewise, the breakfast which is included in the room rate offers a full English and several other options.

In real terms we thought Cromwell`s Inn provided value for money. The staff were all friendly and welcoming and the added incentive for resident guests is the benefit of a 10% discount on food and drink.

The purpose of our trip was to experience the Heart of Wales Line from Swansea to Shrewsbury. A trip we had to postpone several times due to the weather. Cromwells Inn very kindly transferred our booking to a different date free of charge and I am very grateful to them for doing that.

Cromwells Inn is situated in the centre of Shrewsbury and about a 10 minute walk from the train station. It is a very old pub so expect sloping stairs, sloping walls and low ceilings at certain points. Would be very disappointed not to have these features in an olde worlde pub.

Check in was swift and friendly. Our room was Room 1. If I am honest more compact than I expected from the photos on the website. I would say that it has been recently updated as the walls looked freshly painted and the carpet looked pretty new, as did the curtains on the window. The bed was Queen Size and I have to say I have not slept well the past few weeks for various reasons but the bed was so comfortable .......best sleep I have had in weeks. Good quality pillows as well, I think I might just have converted my OH to getting a Queen size bed if we can get one as comfortable as this one.

Good coffee/tea/hot chocolate in the room together with biscuits. An added bonus being that if you eat in the bar you also have 10% off your total bill.

Fair to say that the bathroom could do with some updating but this is a very old building so maybe to be expected. For an old building I was very impressed with the hot water available and the pressure of water and the hot water in the shower was excellent.

We ate in the bar in the evening.....there were a few locals and the ambience was good. We really enjoyed our meal. Looking out the back there is a beer garden which I imagine is well used in the summer months.

So we enjoyed our stay very much and are very grateful that Cromwell's Inn transferred our booking (without asking) to another date. Good place to stay even for one night if you do the Heart of Wales Line.

Stayed for 2 nights here. The room was on the roadside and the traffic noise did disturb us slightly in the morning because it was very hot weather and we had to have the window open. The room was clean but rather small and needed more surface/storage space eg another small table under the TV or shelving in the room and in the shower/bathroom(we had to move the bedside table to put the fan on).
The breakfast was OK, but a little small and a bit of a wait for it to come. A bit more of a choice other than variations on the cooked would be nice eg porridge, Fruits and yoghurts, and/or pastries would be nice too. It was nice to sit outside for it though. A good location but the nearby (NCP or Lion Hotel) parking rather pricey- £10/11 for 24 hours.
A few small improvements would make a big difference here.

Breakfast was excellent, dinner was also excellent - I would recommend the Shropshire game hot pot delicious!! Hobson's and Shropshire Gold ales. The staff were exceptiionally helpful and pleasant. My wife has a blue badge and there was a unlimited time disabled space almost directly in front of the hotel.
The fifteenth century building has a lot of character and the position within the town is excellent.
It was very covid safe with partitions between the tables, tables sanitised before and after use. Hand gel bottles everywhere.

A decent and very affordable place to stay in a central Shrewsbury location. We stayed in one of the more budget rooms, which was relatively clean and minimally furnished, but had pretty much everything we needed. There’s a lack of plugs available for charging devices, and the room’s hairdryer was the old-fashioned kind on the wall. Excellent free breakfast with room booking, plus good veggie options.

This is a lovely hotel and bar in Central Shrewsbury. The bar is lovely and we had lunch here which was nice.
The beds in the rooms are really impressive and definitely in keeping with the old building.
There is no parking at the hotel but you can park at The Lion down the road for £5 for 24 hours. You need to inform the Lion reception when you arrive.
We enjoyed our stay and must say how friendly and helpful all the staff are. Our breakfast server was really attentive and helpful.
The only reason we have not marked a 4 out of 5 in the review is the bathrooms in our rooms really need attention. The tiles, showers and toilets are desperately in need of an upgrade /refurbishment.

This is an odd place. Check-in at 6pm was in the wine bar which appeared to be closing or, at least, empty (some people were just leaving). Fortunately I was going elsewhere for dinner with a colleague. When I got back about 9:30pm, the whole place was locked up. (My room key also worked on the front door). My room was small but for one night I didn’t need a lot of space. Bed was comfortable but the room overlooked a busy town centre thoroughfare. The en-suite bathroom had a toilet mounted on a plinth 🤷‍♀️, a basin and a large shower. Nice toiletries were supplied but there were cracked tiles and the bedroom and bathroom were both very ‘tired’ looking. The main reason I’ve given 2 stars is that I was there on a business trip but breakfast didn’t start until 9am by which time I was long gone.

Myself, my partner and two family members had a wonderful time at Cromwell's. We stayed for 2 nights in a double room and a superior double. Both rooms were lovely with private bathrooms. The breakfast at Cromwells is beautiful, I had the traditional English breakfast one morning- fantastic sausages! And the Eggs Royale another morning. The hosts were lovely and approachable. All the bar staff are a credit to Cromwells, they worked very hard. 10% off all drinks at the bar were great, and having a key to the front door to let ourselves in and out at anytime was great. Thanks so much everyone, we had a lovely stay!

Spent two nights here between Christmas and New Year. It's well positioned in the town centre, although there may be a problem with car parking (we went by train). The bedroom was small but clean. The one problem here was that there was a lack of hot water for the shower at times. Food, particularly evening meal was excellent. Breakfast was slightly spoiled by the young waitress, who seemed more interested in her mobile than the customers and who brought my coffee with milk already in it when I have it black.

Very good location. Friendly staff and good service. Room (No 3) was small but perfectly adequate and surprisingly accommodated a full-size shower. The one negative was the absence of an overhead light, as the reading lights provided inadequate light for reading.
Very good breakfast with a wide range of cooked options.
Would certainly stay at the Cromwell's again.

Is there overnight car parking near by?and do yuou know the rate?
Answer from Michael A
Shrewsbury, United Kingdom3 contributions2 helpful votes
Yea. You can park free of charge in the Loading Bar at the front of Cronwell's between 18.30hs to 07.30hrs this also applies to on-street parking in St Mary's 1 min away. There is a private car park at the Parade in St Mary's, a 1 minute walk, that is free from 16.30hrs to 08.30hrs and then £1 / 30 mins. There is also an NCP car park five minutes away at the bottom of Wyle Cop.
