Our first trip to Wells and opted to stay at the Swan for its central location, free parking and Hot Fuzz involvement. It did not disappoint and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Though parking is first come first served, this was never an issue and there were always spaces during our visit (however there was also a coach party in which may have meant less cars than usual). The central location meant we could explore everything so easily, with the main restaurants, cathedral and bishops palace on our doorstep, and that we could escape the busy streets for a break when needed. We had breakfast both days of our trip and a meal one night and thoroughly enjoyed the food. Highly recommend taking drinks on the terrace too, it’s a beautiful spot looking out on to the cathedral. The service was also great, nothing was too much trouble and everyone was very friendly. We had a four poster room which had a stunning view of the cathedral, and whilst the furniture was purposefully antique, it was all well thought out and charming. We had lots of nice touches in the deluxe 4 poster room too with coffee machine, extra toiletries etc. We were up two floors and there was no lift. Not a problem for us but something to bear in mind if you have accessibility issues. Would recommend this lovely hotel and would stay again.

We just enjoyed a 2 night stay at The Swan as we had a wedding nearby. I happened to book the Cathedral Suite mainly because it mentioned the lovely view, but i must admit that the room itself was something special. It is basically divided into 3 rooms with double sliding doors separating each area -- the decor is elegant for the period and whilst it might be time for a slight freshen up, i actually loved it. The bathroom was the size of a small flat with a fabulous freestanding bath and sizable separate shower with really good pressure. The only gripe were the 2 sinks which are a little small for the space.
The bedroom was lovely and you wake up to the view of the Cathedral which is unbeatable. The bed should have been bigger but it was still comfortable.
Compared with the cost of other hotels we have stayed at in England , this stay was really good value for money.

For health reasons, we have cancelled our longer holiday. At short notice we went for a weekend in our ‘local’ city of Wells. The Swan had one double available, ‘Junior Suite’ for £300 for a two night BB with one dinner included. Huge and very well appointed. Food was good and restaurant staff really good. Central location was great for spending a day gently exploring the city

We had what was overall an enjoyable stay on a Friday night in November.
The hotel has changed hands quite recently and still has some of the Best Western identity of a bygone life.
The check in experience was a bit “dizzy”, but perfectly pleasant and friendly.
We had a deluxe room, 58, overlooking the high street. It was very spacious with a super size king bed, a sofa and also table and chairs.
Our package was DBB and overall we enjoyed the food, service and ambience of the place.
When it came to checkout I mentioned to the woman, who appeared to be the duty manager, a few items for attention. Firstly I highlighted the fact that the light on the mirror in our room didn’t work. She said she knew that and it was a problem that couldn’t be sorted without installing a new mirror.
Then I mentioned that the room safe didn’t work. She also said she knew about that as the change of ownership meant the key cards to operate the safe weren’t recognised by the system.
My third point was that the rooms were really hot, probably by about 3-5 degrees. She went on to tell me that the heating system was old and that was the reason for the heat. So much for climate considerations let alone the pockets of the new owners who are paying for heat that the guests don’t want. We overheard various guests complaining about the heat at breakfast.
Talking of breakfast, the woman at reception was in the dining room coaching a young lad in the art of clearing plates from tables. She needs to consider her own training and think about the impact she had on me, her customer. All I got was a proverbial shrug of the shoulders and no word of apology. This individual should be retrained by the new owners or maybe consider her position!
If these problems are known, why not mention them at check in?!
I’d like to return to the hotel at some point as we did like it for location and the overall experience. Given the issues they seem to be having, we will leave it for a while.
Until my reception experience I would have given it a 4, but sadly I now can’t go beyond a 3.

Having stayed at this Hotel some 30 years ago we were looking forward to visiting again. We booked a 2 day stay through Secret Escapes, but as it turned out their offer was no cheaper that offered by the Hotel direct.
On arrival we found that we were to accommodated in the recently converted external block at the rear of the Hotel. The room was in good condition, but as a modern conversion it lacked any character. Being external it meant that you had to brave the weather as there was not a covered walkway between it and the Hotel main building.

The Hotel is obviously in the middle of a major development where they are presumable adding more modern rooms (externally) that they can fill trading on their (past) traditionally good name.

Having settled in to our room we decided to go to the Bar for a drink. On our way through the maze of corridors to the main part of the Hotel we passed 2 Bars that were not open, presumably in place for the new development and the conference facilities. The only Bar open was a small Bar at the front of the main Hotel. At first we thought this Bar was also closed as the Beer pumps had tea towels draped over them. Upon enquiring we were informed that the Bar was open - BUT HAD SOLD OUT OF BEER !

In its current state the Hotel is not fit for purpose. The Hotel is basically a Building Site and should have been closed during the development. As well as there being no Bar there is not an adequate lounge where you can sit in comfort. The restaurant was ok if a little dated and the food (and especially the wine) a little pricey. In other words the Hotel was little more than an accommodation block.

In conclusion, the Swan Hotel is basically trading on its name and does not provide the level of comfort and convenience you would expect. Being accommodated in a modern room tacked on the back of the Hotel you might as well be booked into a Premier Inn (at half the price) and they always have a functioning Bar.

We stayed there for a function at the Cathedral over the weekend. We were given room 36 which was supposed to be a superior room, but certainly isn’t. It doesn’t resemble any of the photos shown. No proper wardrobe, bathroom door too close to the cupboard used as a wardrobe. Bed was comfortable. As we were only there for 2 nights it was ok. The breakfast tables were mostly only for 2 people but the staff were seating 4 at them which meant that there was very little room to put everything on. Staff were friendly, however, on the Saturday night the bar ran out of Bailey’s and vodka and Irish whisky which was strange given that it was a busy weekend for them. Our friends were told that they could not have a coffee as the machine had been cleaned and that they could make one in their room, which was not very good. On a positive note, despite the above we had a wonderful weekend with good friends.

Lovely looking hotel full of historic features and located right opposite the cathedral. Unfortunately, we had a terrible night sleep due to the location of our room being above/next to the kitchen. There was banging and clanging throughout the night and a lot of noise due to the breakfast preparation/service starting early in the morning. However, we accepted that we drew the short straw with the room allocation and got up really looking forward to our breakfast. The reviews were good online so we paid to have this included in our stay. We arrived at 9.30am and there were around 12 other guests waiting for their breakfast. Over time, we saw people very disappointed with their over cooked poached eggs. We were a little concerned as we had ordered eggs benedict and eggs florentine. We thought maybe it was just a one off and we'd be the lucky ones. We were wrong! We have never experienced such an over cooked poached egg, we didn't even know it was possible. You could of bounced it of the wall and it still would have been intact! Over all the stay was disappointing. The hotel has so much character and the location is amazing but we left feeling tired and distinctly underwhelmed- such a shame.

The Swan has a really interesting and slightly confusing layout of old buildings. The rooms are large and comfortable, clean and with character. Downstairs in the Coach House suffered from very creaky floorboards above which meant it was noisy whenever the people above moved around.
The food in the restaurant was perfectly acceptable though the restaurant itself lacked a bit of atmosphere. The kitchen was a little too efficient at breakfast time, serving the cooked food within 5 minutes of ordering and while we were still eating cereal. That led to a bit of a juggling act on the table and the food getting slightly cold before we were ready.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel itself has a great location in Wells with everything just outside the front door.

We stayed here for four nights in August in a superior room.
Parking is not brilliant but fair enough, we knew that before we booked so can't have an issue with that. The main issue for the car park is there are not enough spaces for the number of rooms.
Although the room was a good size and generally good, it would have benefitted from some new pillows. The bathroom is a bit tired and really in need of an upgrade.
The breakfast was ok but not comparable to the standards we've had at other Best Westerns. I would also have expected an acceptable Wifi connection, alas not, hit and miss at best.
The offerings on the continental buffet didn't match the menu e.g. no fruit salad, unless you count separate bowls of melon, grapefruit and prunes? Some of the staff in the restaurant were good, the attitude of others could be improved! The speed of service on the cooked breakfast needs to be improved, long waits for taking the order and then being served isn't acceptable.
We ate in the restaurant one night. My mistake. The meals we had on the other 3 nights in Wells were far superior and at far more reasonable prices. I should have known better, there were indicators!
1. When there is no menu provided to guests in the room or available on the internet, I should have thought why?
2. With a poor service one morning at breakfast I should have cancelled the booking.
3. The prices for the meal were high for the quantity and quality provided. I'm more than happy to pay the prices but expect to eat of a quality consistent with that price.
Then, it might be just me, but adding a 10% service gratuity is out of order in my book. Personally I prefer to make my (our) own judgement whether a gratuity is appropriate and the rate of such gratuity. I accept that I could have had it removed, but feel that this was my penance for my poor judgement that day.

This hotel is ideally placed to explore Wells on foot and has the benefit of parking. The parking entrance is fine at a slow speed.
The hotel seems to be in new ownership and let's hope they invest in bringing it up to a four star standard.
The carpets are worn and the hotel looks tired. The saving grace are the friendly staff and a reasonable breakfast.
Our room was small but quiet overlooking the rear. The carpet was dirty and the room dusty.
The bath was chipped, the shower had mould , the taps had limescale and the light switch was very dirty.
Cleaning appeared perfunctory probably due to staff levels. However our room was not visited during our stay and we made our own bed, not that much of a hardship but unexpected.
It seems expensive for what we received.
This hotel needs a lot of tlc. We would think carefully before booking again.
