Lovely view from our room, very helpful and friendly staff. Restaurant is Italian with a very good selection on the menu, we had evening meal and breakfast really lovely. Had an enjoyable short stay. Parking near by can be a bit of a problem.

Stayed here at short notice on Valentines as a stopover. If you get this place for less than £75.00 including breakfast - go for it! Any more and I think it would be classed as slightly overpriced. Rooms are clean and beds comfortable. BUT the best part of the stay is the hotel food and wine in the integrated Rugantino's....

Unexpectedly I stayed two nights in room 11 at this historical place. I found everything just charming, from the four poster bed to the staff and the owner Nick. The room has all you need and the bathroom is well done which in old buildings it isn't always the case. I could imagine a romantic weekend there. Wells is one...

Stayed here approx. 4 years ago in November ( trip advisor wont let me go back that far). Unfortunately we had a couple of issues with this hotel but nothing that ruined the experience. We managed to book this hotel at the last minute for the local carnival at a reasonable rate compared to the other local hotels. We had...

Small, quaint very old building right in the centre of Wells. The stairs to the higher floors might be a challenge to some but our room (number 3) was accessible, attractive and newly decorated. There was an uninterrupted view across the green from our two windows to the fabulous west front of the cathedral. Breakfast was fine. We had a...

OK Let's be honest. If Travelodges are your idea of bliss, this place is not for you. It doesn't do corporate and bland. But if you want a friendly relaxed and comfortable place right in the centre of Wells, and a place whose age and character makes you smile, then stay at the Ancient Gatehouse. We had three nights there...

It must be really difficult to satisfy the rating agencies, and the expectations of some guests - clearly an 800 year old building comes with serious limitations. Staircases are narrow and worn, rooms are small, parking non-existent, but for all that, it is worth a great deal more than its 2 stars and the price we paid for it. We...

Although absolutely fascinating place with ancient well worn 800 year old spiral stone stairs up to our rooms not at all practical! No hand rail and rather dangerous - certainly not for ladies in a heel.... A bit annoyed that we were not warned of this very restrictive access and for some could be a massive issue. En suite shower...

We had an amazing stay at this hotel, the location is perfect and the staff amazing. Situated right next to the cathedral for spectacular views and a four poster bed topped off the fantastic historical experience. One note - if like my fiancé you are 6'5 always watch your head!!

Small room, thin walls, incompetent staff, slow service, uncooked food served , no help with bags despite asking. Asked where our room was when we picked up keys. Desk guy replied ' upstairs?'. You couldnt make this up. Raw breakfast, 65 minutes wait for food, not value for money, nor edible breakfast. Asked for scrambled eggs, received an omlette folded...
