This Georgian ivy clad 4 star boutique hotel and restaurant in Suffolk surprises with a twist of urban chic. Our Suffolk hotel is right in the heart of Bury St Edmunds town centre and everything is just a step from here. Explore winding, cobbled, shop filled streets and a plethora of ancient architecture on the doorstep. Once inside, The Angel Hotel is a curious contrast of comfy contemporary design with touches of exotic grandeur. Warm leather sofas vie for your company in the lounge, which is filled with curiosities, pop art, eccentric oddities and cool vintage furniture. It is a hotel of many different aspects all artfully blended together into an exciting package and the bedrooms are no exception. The Angel Eaterie has a great reputation and dining here is a culinary treat.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Dined here several times for lunch and dinner before deciding to stay as an overnight guest. The bar and restaurant are very well managed. The bar person mixed an excellent drink and they came quickly. Rooms are a good size; the bed was comfy and the linen nice and crisp. The pillows were a little disappointing. The hotel is very clean with an active house-keeping team of friendly and professional staff. The thing that stood out as, not in-line with the rest of the hotel, was the check-in and check-out experience. It lacked the professionalism of the rest of the staff.

Thoroughly enjoyed a delicious meal at this hotel. Staff were very professional but friendly and the ambience was really good. We look forward to returning again in the not too distant future and enjoying some other culinary delights in a very pleasant atmosphere.

Visited for lunch on a Saturday, the food was very tasty and we enjoyed our visit. The puddings were very small we felt (and delicious, hence would have appreciated a larger portion size). Nice decor I thought. The main downside is that they don’t provide parking, and it was difficult to find a car parking space nearby.

Went here for a colleague’s retirement dinner, and was exceptionally impressed with the evening. The Bar Staff were friendly, helpful and engaging. The food was fantastic and the waiting staff excellent. One of my colleagues had been stuck in traffic on the A14 and it felt like everyone bent over backwards to get his meal out with ours despite him ordering 15 minutes later than the rest of us. I’m sorry I didn’t get any staff names, but everyone in the bar and restaurant last night deserves high praise indeed for their service. I’d been to the Angel a few times pre Covid and not always had the best experience; but it’s heartening to see such a wonderful place back to offering such a wonderful experience. Thank you all.

A joy to return to the Angel, sadly just for a one night stay, but the hotel was just as lovely an experience as I remember from a few years back, but with the advantage of sympathetic refurbishments to bring it up to date but still retaining that lovely traditional feel. We upgraded from a classic to an Impressions room in the courtyard. Our accommodation was large, tastefully decorated, well equipped, clean and very comfortable. We didn't have the full dining experience but chose a couple of starters from the a la carte menu to enjoy in the comfort of the bar, and these were delicious, the pasta tasted home made. Breakfast was also really good, with sufficient choice and good quality ingredients, beautifully cooked. Above all I have to say how impressed I was with every member of staff that we encountered during our stay. So friendly, professional and welcoming.

Had a birthday afternoon tea for my mother-in-law. Very low uncomfortable seats, very dry overcooked scones, muffin had a rubbery texture, very unhygienic glass table, with a large gap round the edge where you could see where food had previously gone down and not cleaned out . All in all disappointed with the Angel Hotel

Lovely traditional hotel in a beautiful town. Excellent service. Our only meal was breakfast, which was perfect. Only complaint is the incessant background music playing throughout the lounges. So unnecessary! However, get a room at the front as the views to the old abbey and the cathedral are spectacular

Lovely setting, cosy decor, pleasant staff. We came for afternoon tea and as lovely as it was, there was very little savoury, but a stack of cakes. 3 finger sandwiches, a thin slice of delicious sausage roll and a small savoury muffin. The 2 sweet scones each were good, as were the cakes, but we all said we’d have preferred more sausage rolls and a cheese scone instead of half the cakes.
