Due to a double booking of the Junior Suite, we were upgraded to a pretty 2 bedroom cottage off the main courtyard. It was lovely, historic and full of character. The master bedroom was huge and extended the entire width of the property. Original beams were exposed and it had an iron fireplace. Bed was super comfy with clean white linen bedding. Kitchen was clean, spacious and had loads of equipment. Cooked breakfast in the hotel was tasty and the waitress was excellent - friendly and efficient. The proprietor gave us a useful map of Bury city centre - very helpful. Also there's a pretty garden with outdoor seating. The Hotel is about a 10 minute walk into Bury. It is a really interesting city with its ancient Cathedral, gorgeous Abbey Gardens (a must see!), St Mary's Church, lots of shops and wonderful fascinating historic buildings. The market (Weds) was brilliant with its buzzy atmosphere. An interesting and memorable visit to this amazing city. We loved it.…
I stayed on a Saturday following a rugby match at the ground which is about 5 mins walk away. This is a beautiful and well thought out hotel of which the proprietor’s seem rightly proud. The whole place is comfortable and the service I received was exemplary. Breakfast was served to my room hot, fresh and tasty. I had kippers which I was told were from a company in Lowestoft. There is no bar or on site restaurant but Bury has plenty. There is however a small galley kitchen for guests to use if they wish. This would be perfect for a business traveller staying for a few days. 10/10 and thank you to The Abbey Hotel Bury St Edmunds.
We stayed in 'Saint Botolphs Cottage' for two nights. Our host was very welcoming on arrival, the cottage was beautifully traditional, clean and had everything you could possibly need for a short/or longer stay. Breakfast served to the cottage at a time of our choosing was the icing on the cake. We wouldn't choose to book anywhere else when next in town visiting family. Thankyou Abbey Hotel for a lovely stay.
This is my second time visiting the Abbey Hotel and it was once again perfect. I requested one of the cottages in the courtyard which couldn't of been more perfect, a little hideaway in the centre of town! All facilities were fantastic, check in/breakfast/room servicing were friendly and human while still being covid safe. I could not recommend this place enough.
We’re in the Abbey Hotel, in the first weekend when ‘self-contained’ accommodation is available. I’m blown away by the welcome, the breakfast and the little touches to keep you safe and extremely comfortable. You order your breakfast the night before - there’s a choice of American pancakes, cooked breakfast, eggs in various ways, including with ‘soldiers’, Lowestoft kippers and delicious creamy porridge, which they’ll serve with a mix of berries and other fruit, if you ask. Breakfast is delivered to your room by lovely ladies. We booked room 3, a junior suite, which had a dining table and 2 chairs in the spacious bedroom section - you can watch tv while you eat breakfast. Through into the other little room there are two striped upright armchairs, a little table with a toaster, a fridge, microwave and a cupboard with tea, coffee, crockery and a cafetière. They also provide plates and cutlery in case you’re eating in your room. There are lots of exposed beams, a low ceiling and you have to duck your head to go between the rooms. The double-aspect bathroom has a large shower area with an electric shower. The original hotel windows, which you can open (in need of a lick of paint) have secondary glazing, so the room can be warm or cooler if you wish. The added bonuses were a huge number if books in the hallway - lots of art and culture - you could happily spend days here just reading. When I asked for an iron and ironing board I was directed to a room in the basement where this was set up, ready to use. We’ve stayed in Bury many times, at hotels of varying quality, and we’ll come back to the Abbey Hotel because, as my husband summed up, ‘It’s all good.’ …
Went for a Frday to Monday stay, me my husband, my sister and her husband, got to room thought nice cup of tea, little milk cartons nearly 2 months out of date and nasty, complementary toiletries tubes nearly empty where they had been used room so noisy because of traffic even with windows closed this was room 2, asked to move room as got no sleep, lady who we dealt with that day was lovely and helpful, we all changed rooms. The replacement room ob not been cleaned for weeks, dead flies over window ledges and cobwebs inside, plus spider which I cleared myself, bed felt gritty, pillows were like puff balls very uncomfortable. and you couldnt deflate them. Generally run down and dismall, old unclean furniture, breakfast served in room, ok but basic choice, and luke warm, last morning ordered omelette got a folded mess floating in raw egg, so had nothing to eat, no cups and saucers given for coffee, disgusting. Rooms not serviced, and nothing supplied even to just clean it yourself !!!! So would not return again nor recommend, considering just over a week before xmas, not even a bit of tinsel which would have at least maybe if possible brightened this miserable hotel, couldn't wait to get home…
We can't recommend The Abbey highly enough. We stayed in the Cottage, with it's own interesting history having been 'modernised' in the most sympathetic way. We were made to feel welcome to use the hotel facilities, including their fabulous lounge, if we wanted. But the cottage was so well equipped we didn't need to, everything was there that we needed and more. Excellent parking facilities, very comfortable bed, lovely cooked breakfast with plenty of choice etc and so many other thoughtful touches. The family and staff we met were really friendly, very helpful and professional too. The location was brilliant being close the The Abbey and town centre. We'd have no hesitation in going back.
Modern bathroom Lovely old world bedroom Fridge and microwave, glasses and tea making facilities Garden in the sun, to sit and chill Parking Great information from host We just spent the whole day in the garden because we wanted to relax
I had the pleasure of stay at the Abbey Hotel recently and found a beautiful Historic building that has adapted well to these difficult new times. The space was beautiful, well-appointed and could not have been more convenient in location. I was made to feel welcome from the moment of booking, with care and a personal touch making the process a relief in times of distancing. All respect was given to the 'new normal' of UK hospitality without taking away the treat factor of staying in this property. I will definitely stay again next time in town.
Stayed here last night, room warm, bed very comfortable good quality linen and pillows, spotlessly clean. Breakfast was plentiful with lots of choice in lovely surroundings. Friendly staff, could not find a single fault.
