A grand house with contemporary style, a leafy setting near the heart of the city. Jesmond Dene House is neither a townhouse nor a country house hotel. It's simply 40 well-designed bedrooms and suites in a richly historic building offering understated luxury and rather good food. Overlooking the wooded valley of Jesmond Dene, the privately owned hotel guarantees peace, escapism and a refreshing change. Newcastle's city centre, however, is only a five-minute drive. The hotel recently received 4 red stars and the AA Hotel of the Year 2008-2009. Our restaurant Fern is an upmarket neighbourhood Dining Room and Bar, with generosity and the highest standard of produce at its core. Our food is; contemporary, non-fussy, and prepared with love, care and attention. We offer relaxed, informal Geordie hospitality, and memorable dining experiences. Ferns uncompromising approach to the finer details of hospitality makes Fern the ideal place to, meet, eat, drink & celebrate.

This was over the years my wife and I third stay at the beautiful Jesmond Dene House the approach road is well signed now being a quite no through road since our last visits and more peaceful than ever. Covid precautions were evident on arrival putting our minds at rest. We had checked in on line so our key and directions to our room on the ground floor were the only thing needed The young lady on reception was helpful and present with a lovely smile as were all the staff during our two night visit
Our room No 1 on the ground floor overlooked Jesmond Dene woodland and probably needed thinning out over the winter by the city council but still lovely and green
The room was a good size with excellent quality fittings and furniture including a window table and chairs plus a very comfortable bed with soft and medium pillows which were appreciated The en-suite was a good size with a lovely large bath and combined shower plenty of instant hot water and lovely soft towels etc
The lounge area is huge and tastefully decorated while if you wish you can sit in a quite corner if you wish
the bar area again has plenty of seating and also leads to the Fern Restaurant this being a lovely decorated room with a high ceiling and ornate mouldings leading off to the garden room which is great for breakfast and summer dining
We dined in Fern the second night being our wedding anniversary and were not disappointed well prepared top quality food served by the lovely blonde twins who attended to all our needs Breakfast was equally as good with fresh quality items and excellent service
Its pleasing to see that quality hotels that pay attention to service and details are still available and Jesmond Dene House well deserves its Michelin rating
We shall certainly be making a forth visit in the near future

Stayed as a couple for our anniversary. We were given a room that was located where there would be least amount of outside noise. We loved the room. Clean, spacious and was surprised with the macarons that said 'Happy Anniversary' and personal note welcoming us and congratulating us on our special day.

Dinner was also a wonderful experience for both of us. The Maitre D sat us at a table that afforded us a lovely view yet privacy from other diners and again, wished us a Happy Anniversary. Our server was excellent from start to finish. Never intrusive and had the right timings. The food is something else as well. Every morsel of food was an explosion of flavours in your mouth. We even ordered 3 kinds of dessert to share between us.

I would recommend having their breakfast if you are staying here. The food we ordered wasnt greasy and their continental has a varied enough selection even for the pickiest eater.

Check out was also smooth and easy. Thank you to the staff of Jesmond Dene. The setting, the house, the room was wonderful but the staff have completely elevated the experience even more.

We had a three night stay here and enjoyed it. A nice setting with a nice room. I agree with another review that the beds (mattresses) are not good. Mattresses are old and past their accepted lifespan and did not provide comfort at bedtime. We loved the fact that there was water and fresh milk in the fridge for tea and coffee. Free drink vouchers were a nice touch - until we were told there were only certain drinks we were allowed. Almost better not to offer it if you then make it embarrassing and awkward to order the complimentary drinks! Breakfast was good but ridiculous that we paid a surcharge for cappuccinos! At £250.00 per night, it really is penny pinching to charge extra for a milky coffee when filter coffee and tea are included. Breakfast sitting finished at 10.00 which seemed early and the staff were clearing away the continental breakfast at 10.10 which seemed a bit quick. Sounds like a lot of negatives but the staff were lovely and the hotel very nice in a great location. Just a few small tweaks and better beds would make this 5 stars.

To summerise, the minimum I require from a hotel is somewhere to sleep comfortably this hotel did not meet this requirement but it did look nice and have luxury features. They would be better off spending less on digital radios and Décor and more on getting at least some mattress toppers and pillows.

I stayed here for one night and had a standard room. The hotel it’s self is beautiful and the reception area and bar are done to a high standard, the bard does not have a postmix drink gun so all mixers are premium fevertree but did not seem over priced for the setting. Our room had luxury features and was well decorated but was tiny, the bed was a large double but was horrendous quality, the mattress was so lumpy, hard and the springs were sticking in to my back in the night, the pillows were probably good quality at one time but are new very flat, I prefer a flatter pillow but these were pretty pointless. The shower was nice but the shower head would be too low for a tall person our toilet was installed at a downward facing angle and the toilet seat very narrow it felt I was going to fall off. The same toilets were used in the public areas and seem fine when installed at a normal angle. Breakfast was fine, seemed good quality and had good choice, the continental section was abit limited but it looked fresh, the cooked breakfast had nice quality ingredients, breakfast was included in our room rate but I definitely wouldn’t pay the listed £18 for it outside of London.
When we checked out after a terrible night sleep gave feedback to the reception staff regarding beds pillow and toilet, they told us that they wasn’t aware of the toilet issue so hopefully that gets fixed.

I would not stay here again

Sadly all change with JDH staff, constantly ask have you stayed with us before. Yes…many, many times!

JDH Hotel advertise, book with us direct and enjoy a complimentary tipple ! We have always booked direct, did so 19 Dec 2021 and again 8 & 9 Feb 2022, and on both occasions, no complimentary drink offered. But you booked a winter break in Feb…say JDH, yes we did book a winter break for 2 nights, but booked it direct with the hotel!! Just false advertising sadly, as they do not follow through with their offer. Complimentary water in the room is on first night only, of any reservation, we popped ours in the mini bar fridge and it was removed by housekeeping without even being opened on the second day of our stay. We requested twice it be replaced and only on second visit to reception, was it replaced. Sadly the new reception/reservations team do let the hotel down.

We made a dinner reservation on day two at 16.30 hours for 19.30 that evening. When we arrived the same guy who took our booking 3 hours before, asked had we a dinner reservation! On a more positive note the new Italian Assistant Restaurant Manager was engaging, friendly, warm and welcoming, what you expect from this hotel. Also Katie waited on us in the garden room restaurant for our evening meal, great service from Katie who looked after us from the moment we were seated, she was very attentive with her warm and welcoming personality. The food and wine was very good too during this stay. Breakfast buffet table a little limited for choice on this occasion, but perhaps just seasonal fruit.

Remember your customers, would be our advice to JDH.

This place is such a beautiful house and has lovely rooms (we had a suite) which was decorated to a high standard. The staff were friendly but there were major let downs.

Breakfast was, at best, an omnishambles. Plan for at least an hour in the dining room before you get food, and it may come out hot or cold. Toast may arrive before food, well after you finish you food, or not arrive at all. The eggs are cooked perfectly but often the other items were cold. The usual excuse was "we had a lot of orders so are busy"- but that was used said to us on days the dining room was both full and also on days it was near empty as well, so it felt like a hollow excuse for incompetence. Put simply - the morning restaurant staff are all inexperienced teenagers and they are doing their best, but at 18 pounds per plate the hotel is doing itself a disservice by saving costs in this manner.

The room was brilliant we loved it. Our only concerns were that the bathroom underfloor heating had a mind of its own and even when turned to "9oC" sill heated up to its maximum. If the bathroom door was left open, then the rest of the room was like a sauna. There is no AC (even in the newly built annex/new house) but a fan was in the room so i suspect this was a known issue.

Check out was smooth and polite, but I was surprised that the staff did not even ask how the stay was or for any feedback.

Overall this is a lovely, expensive looking country house hotel that commands a p premium for the room - but it sadly feels like there qre major cost cuttings on the management/staffing which really let it down.

We were excited to stay here given previous enjoyable visits to the restaurant, but unfortunately the hotel is somewhat of a letdown.

We were in a deluxe room which was nice enough, but the service was quite shocking. Dirty towels, clearly not properly hoovered after previous guests, broken fan (replaced with a working, but very dirty fan), and one morning we left the room for three hours with the “please service my room sign” on the door and still returned to an unserviced room. This was despite all cleaning items being left in the corridor (laundry baskets, Hoover, mop bucket, empty room service trays, etc), making it very difficult to manoeuvre a buggy to the lift.

Breakfast was also mediocre for the steep price; staff didn’t tell us about the buffet table, we had to ask for toast, the food arrived immediately on one day and very slowly another day.

Dinner in the restaurant was enjoyable, but we ordered dessert to the room which was completely forgotten about, so we had to go back to the restaurant to ask for it.

Then upon checkout service charge is added to almost everything on the bill, which was definitely not deserved.

A hugely underwhelming, quite unsatisfactory stay. We will not be returning.

We stayed here for a one night stint to mark my recent birthday. Having attended the venue previously during this year for a work colleague wedding we were impressed with the offer hence our repeat visit. We stayed on a day when the weather was exceptional for the North east. Checking in was efficient we did a pre check in initially as arrived before our rook was ready. We returned after after our day to get key approx 4pm ish. Room nice and clean and well equipped - rear facing onto a corrugated metal roof with fan noise but no real issie as we booked last minute. Paying anymore i would have preferred a nicer view perhaps ! Mini bar and room snacks expensive but probably standard costs these days, we didn't use. The most bizarre, slightly intrusive and non standard element of our stay ....was after we left for our evening meal at approx 5.45pm ( having only taken room key at full check on around 4pm) when we got back to the room at maybe 7.45 - 8pm we found room service / cleaner ? Had entered our room and clearly checked the mini bar, left a flyer on the bed and straightened the bathroom... perhaps this is efficency at its max but I found it a little over the top given we had only been in the room less than 3 hours! Benefit of doubt given around this but I feel non standard practice and a little intrusive on privacy so soon after check in. Aside from this minor facet of our stay we enjoyed a couple of drinks in the garden and breakfast was pleasant in the sunroom. Small details of the breakfast service could boost experience e.g
Ensure butter is replenished and available on every table ( we had none had to ask and it wasn't forthcoming from the first waiter, despite him bit being overly busy). Eggs were a little under cooked to my taste so an enquiry around that would be of benefit (albeit I could have perhaps asked for this).

Can't comment on the Fern dining room but with a Michelen star award and prices to match, I would expect diners have an exceptional experience with no exceptions.

Overall this is clearly a high end venue with the little extras that reflect this e.g Molton Brown room toiletries and gourmet snacks.
It does have a relaxed feel in most areas but I do feel there is a natural expectation on the venues clientèle to 'fit in' to the hotels standards - no issue with that from me !

We had a lovely stay in this hotel on the way up to Scotland. It’s a really nice hotel surrounded by green. Our bedroom was a good size with a super comfy bed and nice view over the garden. The only downside is there wasn’t a bath but everything else made up for it. We like it so much we booked to stay for two nights on the way back down from Scotland and we were really looking forward to it.
However, the ‘superior double’ we were given on our return journey was a small room right in the roof eaves of the hotel which had no window you could look out of. Amongst other things, it was very hot up there with a smaller bed than our previous room. The room was simply not done to the spec of the first room we stayed in and indeed the rest of the hotel, which was a real shame. Seeing as we were going to be spending two nights in this room and had paid £240 for it, we called reception to ask if there was another room we could move to. The answer was they were fully booked. We called again and were directed to the night manager who had just come on duty.
Long story short - the solution they could eventually offer was a junior suite for the first night (so they did have an alternative room despite originally being told they hadn’t!) with a different room on the second night. We didn’t want to move rooms so said we were happy to leave and go to another hotel- provided we could get our money back of course. We wasted the best part of an evening, after a long drive down from Scotland, with them rowing with us about this. They said they could not authorise a refund because the general manager had gone home... Eventually, after several conversations with them, we got our money back. The manager also intimated that the roof we were given was not satisfactory.

Had the hotel just agreed to give us our money back in the first instance, after we had been told that was the only room we could have, we would have been fine with it all. We would have gone back to the hotel in future. But the fact the hotel staff handled the issue, and us, so badly and and wasted our evening, after giving us a room which was obviously not up to standard, has made us not want to go back to the hotel and go so far as to write a review on here, which we wouldn’t usually do. Please treat your guests properly and with respect Jesmond Dene House.

Visited for afternoon tea for a family birthday and had a great time.
The hotel is beautiful, we particularly liked the conservatory and gardens.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, looking smart in their face masks.
The food itself was very tasty, things we have not tasted before. It all tasted very fresh and overall we were very impressed.
There was so much food we had to bring some home.
It would be nice to have a bit of light background music playing so you didn’t have to listen to other people’s conversations.
A bit pricey - they do add a service charge automatically which adds to the expense.

The coastal route north would be a lovely day out taking in Druridge Bay, Bamburgh, Holy Island (need to plan for the tides). If you’re interested in old battle sites then the Flodden site near Etal & Ford is worth a look for an hour. If you like gardens then Belsay Hall is a good morning out. Vindolanda is worth seeing as part of the Roman Wall. Kielder lake and surrounds and the ‘dark skies’ experience at Battlesteads should be on your list to consider although you should be aware that you need a cloudless night at Battlesteads to get the best out of the dark skies experience.
