Location was good, beds were comfortable but that's the only good thing about it.

One of the staff members acussed my friend for spitting down the stairs in which she was completely wrong apparently she seen him on CCTV but it was someone else.

You have to climb 2 flights of stairs to go to the bathroom and the shower. No towels provided for guests. Sometimes toilet paper isn't replaced by staff when empty.

The kitchen is beside the bathroom, there was a constant smell of Indian food throughout the corridor. No one seemed to clean up after themselves, of course cooking your food is completely ok but the constant smell of curry, korma etc was horrendous when trying to get a shower or go to the toilet.

The Albatross is an okay place. The location is fantastic, being very close to the train station and right in the heart of Newcastle; if you can't reach everything you want to see by foot, there's also a metro station nearby. My room was at the back at the building, at the end of a long corridor, and was remarkably quiet; the only sound from outside was seagulls in the morning, and while you could hear other people walking in the building, because there was no one walking past our door this was not much of a disturbance. I also really appreciated not being assigned a bed so I could choose the much more desirable bottom bunk when I arrived at my half-empty dorm room.

Unfortunately the facilities are extremely lacking, even in basic amenities. The rooms had absolutely no hooks anywhere, so it was lucky that there were only 3 of us and we could dry towels/hang coats on the bedposts. There is a huge lack of sockets so phone charging needs to be strategic. No individual lamps either which meant I was reading with my phone torch in order not to disturb anyone else. Beds were okay, the linens are some of the more comfortable I've experienced, but the bunks are quite low (I couldn't sit up without hitting my head on the top bunk) and the bed I was in was positioned in such a way that if anyone had been above me, they would have been climbing up and down next to my head. There were lockers in the rooms but they were quite small. There wasn't anything as basic as a bin or a mirror in the room.

Toilets and showers were disappointing. The bathrooms are basically just public toilets with no hooks or surfaces to put toiletries on, giving you the feeling that you were brushing your teeth in a public place rather than private accommodation. The one shower that had any hooks in it didn't work – the temperature dial was clearly broken and there was no hot water. None of the other shower stalls had hooks which meant you could either leave your clothes/towel susceptible to theft by hanging it over the door, or collecting water on the floor. Both facilities were also quite a long walk from the room, so bring shower shoes.

I only used the kitchen to refill my water bottle so I can't say how well-stocked it was. It was quite big and there was also a common area that always had a few people in it. I didn't have much interaction with staff, though I appreciate there is a 24-hour reception as my train was delayed past 11pm. I didn't need to provide ID or even my surname when I checked in which was questionable, and the guy checking me questioned why I was bothering to read the terms and conditions of my stay before signing them! In the email I received before arrival I was told I'd need £5 cash for a key deposit and £25 cash for a damage deposit, but the damage deposit is apparently only for large groups (this was not communicated), so I ended up carrying way more cash than I needed over the weekend.

All in all this was an okay stay for a weekend in Newcastle, but I wouldn't book it again.

Solo female traveller!

This was my first time in a hostel and I have to say I will be returning. Perfect location, warm and safe rooms and despite being a bank holiday, it wasn't noisy at all.

The staff were absolutely fantastic. They moved me from a 4 bed dorm with 3 guys to a 6 bed female dorm they had space in so I'd feel safer, without me even asking. I had an issue with my card and they did their very best to help me fix it. Honestly can't thank them enough. Would highly recommend and will be returning.

Roughly 25 of us stayed at the Albatross in July '22.

Good points: it was clean, the staff were friendly, kitchen/shared facilities were ok and again clean and well looked after. The hostel is in a good spot in the middle of lots of bars and restaurants. For budget accommodation, it is difficult to complain a great deal.

Bad points: our room was absolutely sweltering, which made sleep difficult, and we couldn't open the window. The toilets, while serviceable and clean were a shared facility and unfortunately our room was about 2 flights of stairs (down, across a corridor and back up again) away from them. No lift to our room on the 3rd floor also wasn't ideal.

In summary, I'm sure the heat issues aren't a regular occurrence. So, if you want somewhere budget, that is clean with nice staff, and are not bothered about shared toilet facilities that could be a few mins away from your room, this place is an ok base for Newcastle.

The room was basic but spotlessly clean, as were the toilets & showers. The bed was very comfortable & the heating was good, and it wasn't as noisy as I expected. The staff were friendly & very helpful too. This was my first time staying at the Albatross Hostel as I was going the Darren Hayes concert at the O2 City Hall & it wasn't too far from the venue. I would recommend this hostel to anyone & would definitely stay there again.

The location is excellent. You are not far from the main train station as well as directly in the city and almost next to the party mile. We had a 4-bed room to ourselves. The mattresses were very comfortable and the covers clean.

Nevertheless, we lacked the right hostel feeling, where you can meet new people. A pub crawl was not offered by the hostel. Rather, the narrow entrance area aroused the charm of a typical hotel. In the back area (which we never visited) there is probably a kitchen as well as a common room. Unfortunately, the Internet worked in the 1. Not OG. The room window could not be opened either. In the shower there was only lukewarm water. Some hostel residents have sometimes performed impossible behavior (e.g. lack of cleanliness when using the shared toilets or noise in the middle of the night).

Nevertheless, the hostel is quite suitable for a short stay in Newcastle.

Stayed on a Friday night in shared female 6 bed room. Only four of us in there and it was a very spacious room, plenty of space for bags etc. No issues with noise either from the street or other people staying and had a good nights sleep. Lockers available in the rooms, but you need your own padlock. Clean toilets and showers along the corridor. Fairly pleasant sitting room and kitchen downstairs.
Really helpful and friendly staff. I was able to store my bag all day after I checked out in the morning - was locked away by staff. Thank You!

My partner and I stayed at the Albatross hostel for one night on Saturday 21st April. We had tried to book into a hotel but found everything was really expensive so decided to try a hostel instead. We have stayed in hostels on the continent before but not in this country so it was good to give it a go. The Albatross only opened in February this year and I don't think it has had much publicity as yet.
We arrived fairly early (11.30am) and after driving around the one way system about 3 times, finally found the Albatross. It is in a brilliant location - on Grainger Street - which is slap bang in the city centre about 2 minutes walk from the central train station and the shops and nightlife. We were off to the football for the afternoon and St James is only 10 minutes away.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful - especially in finding the parking which is in an alley just off the dreaded one way system. Staff gave us maps to find our way around and the reception was filled with the usual leaflets of things to do in and around the city. As well as that there were bus and train timetables.
Our room was a twin room with bunk beds. There aren't any rooms with en-suite but the showers and toilets were fine, the only criticism being that they were on the other side of the building. Everywhere we ventured in the hostel seemed to be really clean although we didn't manage to venture to the kitchen or lounge due to a few too many drinks on the Saturday night!
Newcastle is a great place and the Geordies are one of the nicest people in this country. I would recommend the Albatross as a good, cheap alternative to a hotel for younger people and couples.

The place is centrally located but unfortunately the walls are paper thin and the windows are really old. We were woken up several times during the night. Toilets were not v clean. Staff seemed polite enough.
