I wish I had read the reviews on here first before booking this hotel for a work trip.
I booked it because it is close to New Street train station, and I'm afraid it's good points end there really.
After a long day I just wanted a bath and bed and, upon arrival, I was pleased to find that there was a bath in my room. Unfortunately the bath did not come with a plug - why have baths if you don't supply a plug to keep the water in?!
I phoned down to reception at about 8.45pm to ask for a bath plug and was told someone would bring one up (I was in the 9th floor otherwise I would have gone to reception). Two more phone calls and 45 minutes later I eventually received a bath plug! How long does it take?!
The room was cold, but there was air con (noisy) and a small electric heater. I didn't want to leave either of these on overnight, so in the morning it was freezing! Everything looked a bit grubby and shabby. I think hotels like this one are finding it hard to compete with the likes of Premier Inn, Easyhotel and Travelodge.
Breakfast was not good either - cheap-looking sausages, bacon that looked like dry, chapped skin, stale croissants and no fresh fruit.
Very disappointing. Will not stay there again!

This is by far the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Instead of paying £49 for a room I’d recommend buying a sleeping bag from GoOutdoors for £19, donating £10 to a homeless person and using the rest on snacks and staying in a shop doorway as it would be more hygienic! Truly dreadful place! Whilst the rooms aren’t modern, there is no excuse for a lack of cleanliness and hygiene. Dust is everywhere, stains all over the walls, Bedsheets full of cigarette smoke and uncleaned bathroom facilities.

On a positive you will become immune from the coronovirus after one visit!

Stayed here before 11 years ago. Was horrendous back then and it’s still the same now! Upon check in there was who I think is the reception manager having a disagreement with a guest. She wasn’t quiet about it at all. The young girl who checked me in was lovely and probably the only positive of my few hours there. The room was clean but had no window and the room was so hot. The bed was uncomfortable that it was like lying on a piece of plywood. The teabags they provide are genuinely comparable to cats piss. The walls are paper thin so you can hear absolutely everything going on in the next rooms. Then fellow guests decide to run up and down the corridors shouting from 3am onwards. I checked in at 9pm and checked out at 6am as I couldn’t take being there any longer. The carpets in the corridors are filthy and genuinely are the same ones that were there 11years a go. The carpet in the reception is literally from the 1990s and is in desperate need of a deep clean and hoover or better still replace it. It’s a cheap hotel that’s for sure but it wasn’t even worth the £34 pound I paid to stay there. I have stayed in many other Britannia hotels around the country but this one needs serious staff training and refurbishment. I seen advertised on a sign breakfast for 12.95pp and I really hope it was a joke. Nothing in that place is worth 12.95 not even the rooms. Never will I ever make the mistake of staying there again. It is an absolute dive. I work in a 5star hotel so when I booked this one I knew it wasn’t going to be the best but it is literally comparable to faulty towers. Even tho it’s cheap it is definitely worth paying a little bit extra to stay somewhere else. Avoid is all I can say!

Not very good experience. I booked a double room with a window but at the check-in I was given a room without any window.
I politely asked for a different one and we got a very tired-looking, dusty one with the bathroom dirty. I found pubic hairs in the shower and spots, dust and more hair all over the toilet seat. There was also some strange substance spread on the chair which looked suspiciously as human mucus. The tea spoons were dirty and rusty and the mug had spots of leftover coffee on it from a previous use. They obviously hadn't been washed.
I didn't want to go back to the reception as there was a very long queue so I took the room without fuss, anyway we were going to stay only for one night.
The only two positive things are the location which was great, right in the middle of Birmingham and at walking distance from an event we were attending at the O2; and also there wasn't a hair dryer in the room and when I asked for one at the reception they sent quickly someone to bring it.
This was my second time staying at Britannia, the first time it had been a pleasant experience but not this time. The dirty and tired room we got wasn't worth the money we paid, especially because it wasn't the one I saw in the photos of my booking when I booked the room.

Back in its day I’m going to presume this was one heck of a hotel, however the bathroom needs a whole brand new suite, the bathtub was really grimy and dirty, I wouldn’t have put a pig in there let alone myself or my child to bath/shower. The toilet wouldn’t flush- Maintenence came up to fix the problem, it sorted it for about 2 flushes and then gave up the ghost again.
The windows need updating, the noise coming from the street ( I know the hotel can’t help the noise but it can minimise it ) all night long with barriers being announced going up and down and lorries coming and going make for a difficult nights sleep- even when you are a heavy sleeper. Due to the windows being old the room was freezing, with heating on, so had to request another duvet just to keep warm.
I’m sure if these things weren’t an issue then it would be a lovely place to stay. The location is perfect, right in the heart of all the shopping, and the staff were incredibly helpful.

Stayed here last night due to booking a concert at the arena, was happy I wasn’t staying in it any longer than necessary.

Bathroom was very dirty - nothing had been cleaned, hair in sink, tooth paste and watermarks all up the mirror and sides. Bath was dirty so didn’t bother to use it.

Bedside cabinet and table were covered in various stains, the bed itself was clean itself but very uncomfortable, I didn’t sleep very well at all.

Upon arrival I could hear occupants in the next room for 30 minutes - the walls are paper thin! So if you are considering staying here bring earplugs, because you can hear everything!!!

When I checked out I was going to complain to staff but another girl was and reception didn’t seem to care, so I didn’t bother myself.

I had paid £35 for my room, which is very good for its location but it is very dated, dirty and the staff don’t seem to care much for customer satisfaction. Will not return.

A group of friends came here for the weekend for a friends hen party. We found check in easy as room allocation good. The rooms themselves were great! Comfy double bed, coffee/tea making facilities , really powerful shower and a clean room! We were really impressed with the location of the hotel and also the security , after coming back from a night out two security men asked for our names and room number before letting us in. Really reassuring. The most impressive thing about the hotel is the fact it has its own bar and a great seating area. This was a real bonus for us as a group. Overall a great stay when visiting this lovely city!

Stayed here in for 1 night (although booked for 2 nights as i was arriving 22:30pm) but wasnt leaving Birmingham until 21:00hrs the next day. Got the room for £52 for 2 nights. Room was decent sized basic room for the price and surprisingly clean which is fairly unusual for Brittania Hotels. Bed was comfortable too with power sockets right next to the bed. there were some downsides though. The Hotel entrance is hidden away so when i arrived was a bit lost then found it but with groups of people hanging around outside late night it was a bit scary. Reception needs a big uplift looks like something out of the 70s Fawlty Towers. Reception staff were not exactly welcoming and when i checked out the female member of staff just looked at me as if i was trash. During my brief stay it became clear the hotel is primarily used by people for brief meets, thin walls all i could hear was people meeting for 'Fun' and meets. I am assuming you get the picture of the clientelle it attracts and for what purpose. I did put a do not disturb sign on my door but even then next morning cleaning staff opened my door whilst i was catching up on much needed sleep (their records were not clear that i had booked the room for 2 night not 1). So although the hotel was cheap and extremely central it really needs a major uplift. Unlikely i will be staying there again as the type of guests in the hotel at the time (and the purpose for what they were there for) is not what i was looking for when i booked a hotel room.

When you compare the location and you see the Hotel rooms and service you are completely disappointed. Toilettes totally broken, hot water separate from clod water with a never mix: so you burn or you become an ice cream......Carpet dirty never cleaned. Never again in this hotel.

My husband booked an executive room for our stay for 2 nights. We were shown to room 402. It was a horrible dark room with a dark setee and telephone. The wall paper was peeling away from walls, the bed looked poorly made up, the carpet was dirty, and the bathroom with broken tiles looked unclean. My husband went straight to reception to ask for another room By the time we got to room 903 and tried to unlock the door, we heard voices from inside. The man on reception apologised and offered us room 902 saying it was identical. It was certainly a lighter room being on the very top floor but the room itself was extremely disappointing and was definitely NOT an executive room. It had no seating area and no telephone. The curtains did not cover the window and couldn't be opened, windows were filthy inside and out with heavy condensation and there were cigarette butts on the window sill. One bedside lamp was only for decoration as there was no plug for it, the bed was hard and uncomfortable, the carpet was heavily stained, the toilet did not flush fully.Breakfast in the morning was shambolic. The choice was poor, the chef wore dirty clothes, looked exhausted and appeared to be the only chef cooking. He also cleared the tables. There was no proper service at all.

Do you need a key card to access the lifts ?
Answer from Alexander P
London, United Kingdom34 contributions10 helpful votes
No the hotel is open so no key cards and all the rooms will open with a solid push due to the age. This hotel is unsafe with no security for guests. It is open access with limited CCTV and the staff, especially Charles from Maintenance is aggressive angry and I would suspect on drugs. It also seems to be some half way house, from the clientele I have had the unfortunate experience of meeting.
