As an irregular regular of the Britannia Coventry, staying for a couple of nights every two months or so I am pleased to report that I noticed improvements are being made and that on every visit the hotel gets better in terms of décor and maintenance yet there still remains much to do.

The reception area does not present a fantastic first impression and I could believe that some potential guest would turn around at this point and not stay, however, then you would not be in receipt of a wonderful welcome by the hard-working yet very professional, efficient and friendly staff.

The route to the room could be improved with the cleanliness of the lifts nearly always an issue for me, the new carpets in the corridors are a great addition.

The room was first of all larger than most, it was nicely decorated and well maintained, with new chairs, the television was very small and old but did the job. The bed had a very comfortable mattress with an okay duvet and pillows.

The bathroom was again large, yet let the room down given its dated state, though the shower had brilliant water pressure and the room was exceptionally clean.

The bar is OK, I have only had drinks and they were pricey but very good, can’t comment on the food but £13.50 pp for breakfast is expensive compared to say Travelodge or Premier Inn.

The location is fabulous for the main bus station (across the road), the train station is a taxi or bus ride away, and the town centre a five-minute walk.

As this is normally the cheapest hotel in the city centre area it does present great value for money, please do not expect the Ritz but in my experience, you will have a comfortable value for money stay.

Ok, the street appeal is not the greatest but when you just want somewhere to stay, that's not an issue. However, the area to the left of the entrance has a smoking container to stub out and place butts - which is open at the bottom and so, not only ineffective but it's obvious that it's been a while since anyone has cleared them all up.

The reception area is outdated and very dark but ok, I wasn't planning on spending too much time in it.

The twin bed room was very spacious but that's as far as it goes. It was very hot even on a not particularly sunny day and the only ventilation is about 3" that the external window can be moved to maximum. No air con, no fan, no nothing which subsequently impacted the ability to sleep. The bathroom, whilst seemingly clean, had gaps around the bath exposing the wall itself, the vanity unit fascia did not appear to have been cleaned for a long time and the shower was somewhat of a farce. Ok, it might've been my fault that it took me a while to figure out how to change it from the bath to the shower, but whilst the temperature was very hot (even the sink taps) the flow was not great, the shower head fixing was loose and so couldn't adjust but the water just kept pouring out of the bath on to the floor - no matter how much I tried positioning the shower curtain to prevent it. Very messy!!!

The website states the bar is open till the last person leaves, the bar person informed us she finished around 11pm. Whilst the bar was quiet, we did have to wait for her to return from her fag break out of the glass doors from the bar itself and so, could be observed. Oh and the lemonade was flat no soon as dispersed. Furthermore the website states snacks, panini's etc were available to purchase at the bar. No, the most my friend could get was a pack of peanuts. We were also informed that breakfast may or may not be served, dependent on how many people had actually pre-booked it. Oh, and this is not necessarily a bad thing, but we discovered that housekeeping do not automatically attend to the room during your stay but will if requested. My friend and I prefer that but again, would be helpful if we'd been informed this on checking in (as we were looking for a 'do not disturb' sign and couldn't find one).

Lastly, other than a receptionist having his fag straight outside of the hotel doors , it really isn't particularly disabled friendly. There are 2 sets of doors to ingress/egress and none would stay open on their own. As one door alone did not provide the space for my disabled friend to pass through, I had to request assistance (every time from a hotel resident) so we could at least open one set of doors and then onto the next set. Not great ....

Whilst I did not expect luxury, I do expect to receive what is stated on their website and for £124 per night, it just falls way too short.

Bullet holes in window give you a clue to this hotels problems. It’s questionable wether the security staff give reassurance or add to the general feeling of unease! Added to the state of the reception area and entrance you may feel you’re in the Wild West rather than on a relaxing trip to the Cotswolds. However on the positive side, the food is lovely. Breakfast are great, plenty of choice, fruit and cereals and evening meal is usually a roast with another option and again very good.. 3 course meal.
And the restaurant staff are helpful .
Room facilities are basic, make sure you bring your own shampoo and shower gel. There is soap, a couple of teabags, coffee and milk cartons. The restaurant staff were happy to provide a cup of real milk if asked which keeps cold on the window sill between the secondary glazing. If your room is cold check the secondary glazing is closed and the radiator is on. The rooms are nice and warm with plenty of instant hot water.
Tip- check you have a working shower in your room. Although we had the shower head the lever to turn it from the taps was missing along with any means of removing the plug from the bath. Making washing your hair v difficult - use a mug? Or don’t stay in 341!
My definition of bed is that it’s more comfy than sleeping on the floor but that’s not Britannia’s definition. If you prefer a softer ride try asking for a quilt to sleep on? !
Rooms are spacious, dated but well furnished. We found it quiet on a night.

This hotel is very large (300+? rooms). It is a late 60's/early 70's Concrete and glass structure immediately behind the new cathedral and beside University of Coventry buildings; across the road it the bus station and 100 yards down the road is the Coventry Museum of Transport. It is almost in the heart of Coventry. You will therefore be very surprised to hear how quiet it is. During my stay there were 5 coach parties (=about 200 guests) using the hotel and there was very little internal noise. Good secondary double glazing almost eliminates street noise.
The hotel is clean and tidy but a little TLC would help with some of the decorations and in the bathroom, where the fittings are worn and at the end of life. The water is very hot and is at a high pressure - so a good shower is possible, The rooms are very spacious The manager of this hotel must be a very happy man because he has an excellent set of staff who are hard working and polite and helpful, clearly doing their utmost to ensure guests have a good experience.
I enjoy all the food on offer. It was clearly geared towards mass catering and a quick service. . Breakfast was very good with a wide choice on offer - even porridge. The evening meal again offered a good choice with a well presented salad at each service.
The happy hours in the bar (6pm to 9pm) was great. This is an incredible value for money hotel and we all enjoyed the stay here. Thank you so much Britannia.

Yes it’s a mystery how this hotel got its 2 and a half star rating as a1 star would be nearer to the truth.
Stayed here for one night on a “Mystery tour” trip, so didn’t have a clue as to where we would go, the hotel or accommodation we would stay at.
Would like to have said me and my group of friends were pleasantly surprised but sadly it was a big let down, after accommodation we have been given in the past on previous Mystery tours had been lovely.
The Britannia hotel was in a very neglected state. The bedrooms were in poor condition with furniture and fitments that either needed repairing or better still throwing out. A list of things that needed addressing in our rooms were as follows
* A missing wardrobe door
*Wall lights with no glass covers on , so bulbs and wires on show.
*Lights that didn’t work.
*Ripped and dirty chairs
*A smoke alarm covered with a plastic bag (obviously the housekeeping staff should of spotted this and removed it immediately)
*No hot water for morning showers
*Mismatch length in window curtains
Generally old worn furniture and furnishings in a sorry state. The whole of the hotel is in need of a complete overall and deep clean, even the food on offer in the hotel was very poor and unappetising. The only good thing about the hotel, was that the bedsheets were clean.
Safe to say I would not be returning to this hotel of my own freewill and glad to get home for a hot shower and a bed pillow that’s not like a boulder to lie my head upon.

Stayed at this hotel on a 4 day Caledonian coach trip . I must admit when we pulled up I thought OMG where have they brought us from the outside it looks really grotty . On entering the receptionist were quick and efficient to give us room cards and pointing to the 3 lifts to use . The room were large with 2 single beds , wardrobe , drawers , chair and coffee table with tv and kettle , there were iron and ironing board in the wardrobe for use . Hairdryer in dressing room drawer. Bath with shower over in the bathroom . Although we were told rooms wouldn’t be serviced during our stay anything you wanted just had to ask reception, which I asked for refills of tea coffee etc to received in sealed bags ( Covid friendly ) Room and bedding were clean . Room 331 , although windows really did need a clean .
Meals were help yourself and were very tasty and had choice of 3 items for evening meals , breakfast was usual full English . The only thing I can say about the restaurant was that it was quite dark . Plenty of waiting staff to clear tables and sanatiser were available for use .
I know this chain of hotels gets bad reports but on this visit found the inside of the hotel didn’t match the outside so give it a go for the price we paid it was excellent value .

Arrived at the hotel as part of a budget coach party. After reading reviews beforehand ,was very apprehensive about my upcoming stay. To my amazement, the hotel is quite nice. Large rooms with good heating and large bathroom in quite good order, with strong jet shower and pIping hot water

It gets better: All the staff are polite and helpful. The hotel is well run and the restaurant serves delicious food with faultless service. To top everything, the location is wonderful: Bang in the centre with a Sainsbury and Co Op nearby together with all attractions.

I have stayed at several Britannia hotels, some have been poor. But rest assured, this is a true bargain. Only budget stayers with unrealistic expectations of 5 star standards will be disappointed.

One of the worst hotels anywhere, ever. Stay away from this dump. Toilets don't work, showers don't work, rooms are worn out and dirty with some broken furniture, lifts are filthy, customer service is non-existent and those members of staff who actually acknowledge you were unpleasant, drunken teens come in from the streets to sleep and keep warm in the reception. After experiencing all this, we decided to steer clear from the restaurant and bought our own breakfast from the local shops and restaurants. With a little bit of care this place could be excellent, its location is fantastic and close to center and shops, it's just a shame that this place is so uncared for and has been allowed to sink so low.

After reading some of the reviews of this hotel we were prepared for the worst. The approach to and the outside of the hotel was uninspiring to say the least but once inside we were pleasantly surprised. Please look up at the amazing ceiling in the foyer. There are three lifts so our wait to get to our room didn't take long.

The room was spacious with white, clean bedding and, to our relief, no unlaundered cushions or throws adorning the bed. A few marks on the cream carpet weren't a big deal to us in the grand scheme of things.

The bathroom was a tad tired but had plenty of space for toiletries and the powerful shower was easy to use. As usual I carry cleaning wipes for the surfaces/loo and I also wash the cups before use so we were happy.

Every meal in the restaurant was delicious with a choice of three main meals in the evening and a filling breakfast in the morning. All the staff were efficient and very polite.

We realise that some people's experiences were different to ours but we can only say what we saw.

An extremely pleasant stay, thank you.

Stayed here for 2 nights. Met at reception by a lovely lad. He was very cheerful and happy and really helpful. It was clean and comfortable. Could do with abit updating. Bar was nice for a quiet drink. Only problem we found was that they said on the website that there was a luggage storage but when we asked we were told there was none because of covid and staff having to touch people's luggage. So we had nowhere to put our luggage even though we had to check out at 10 and were not flying till later that evening. All they needed was a room people could put in there own bags if the staff didnt want to touch them or the staff could sanitise there hands after touching the bags maybe it might be an option.

We only have the experience of the morning breakfast. They provided traditional English breakfast. I think because they only have very few customers. They have to save costs. The foods didn’t look fresh. For example,I suspected that they only put few fresh bacon on the top to cover the non fresh one, the colour of beans look dull, no container for coffee, only provide some instant coffee bag. It wasted my money and got an unhappy start of morning.
