The Red Lion Hotel is Europe’s oldest purpose-built hotel, dating back to the 13th century when it was used to house the stone masons building Salisbury Cathedral. Perfectly located right in the heart of Salisbury city centre, you’ll just be a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral and market square, and a short drive from Stonehenge and Paulton’s Park. Treat yourself to Salisbury’s most famous afternoon tea by the open fire in their 800 year old lounge. Or dine alfresco in the picturesque courtyard underneath one of the oldest Virginia Creeper vines in the world. You’ll find modern bedrooms available, or you may wish to choose a historic, oak-beamed room. Treat yourself to a four poster suite or the famous Seamstress room (with a cast-iron bathtub at the end of the bed) for pure indulgence. There’s a small car park available on site and a public car park next door to the hotel.

The Best Western Salisbury Red Lion Hotel offers a historical atmosphere with its charming character, although it is also noted for decor that appears tired and in need of a refresh. While its central location is popular among guests, issues such as limited parking and variable service quality have been pointed out.
Opinions on value and cleanliness vary, with some praising the tidiness and others critiquing additional fees and worn aesthetics. The rooms are often described as requiring updates and improvements in noise and temperature control.

Detailed Reviews
Our check-in was friendly, quick and efficient. Our room was clean and warm, the beds comfortable with a choice of pillows. We had a fish goujon sandwiches and cider which were pretty good. The hotel is in a great location which optionable £15 private parking with free car charging if required. Problems arrived at breakfast time however with food quality. The food was cooked with massive incompetence. Potato "rostis" were still frozen inside, tomatoes barely cooked, baked beans lukewarm, vegetarian sausages curry flavoured. Like many of the reviews here, I would recommend eating elsewhere! I would return to stay.

Comfortable room, but we knew it would not be serviced during our stay.
Other hotels manage to do it.
We ordered towels & beverage refills every morning, & they were delivered promptly.
Good location, car park a short walk away.
Plenty of options for lunch & dinner nearby, so we only had breakfast at the hotel.
Bar was shut.
We checked the prices with several booking organisations, as well as B.W. central booking.
However, by booking direct with the hotel we got a proper breakfast (instead of grab-and-go), and free parking at the nearby municipal car park - both worth a lot of money & the price was almost the same as others we were quoted.

I stayed here for one night in March for a business trip.
The hotel is in a great location central town and has on site parking for an extra £15 per night which we hadn’t realised wasn’t included in the booking so do check.
The rooms are very dated but clean.
The food was average pub food but also had a good variety.
I wouldn’t stay here again due to the noise throughout the evening I was above the Garden and people smoking and opening and closing the doors late into the night I didn’t get much sleep and had to be up at 5 so for a work trip was not ideal.
The staff were very very attentive and polite.

Lovely hotel, right in the middle of everything. Staff were very efficient and helpful. We wanted somewhere for a family get together and it was perfect. The lounge was so comfy with its open fire.

The Red Lion in Salisbury was our first hotel after COVID restrictions and we felt entirely secure during our stay. The anti virus measures were extensive and excellent. There were sanitizer points throughout the hotel, guests and staff wore masks in public areas, there was a one way system throughout the hotel and check in details were completed via a QR code remotely once we got to the room, with reception calling to ensure that there were no issues with it. Reserving the room online was very easy and straight forward. The price was very reasonable. The Red Lion's communication before and after the trip was excellent. Housekeeping was really good, with disposable items likely to be touched and left behind but hard to clean bagged, such as tea and coffee supplies and toiletries. All the staff we met were polite and helpful and keen to make our stay a good one. The location of the Red Lion is excellent, close to the city centre and cathedral, and it has a nice courtyard you can sit out in. It appears to be an old coaching inn, so parking is behind the hotel in a public car park and costs £10 for 24 hours, a pay and display permit can be bought at reception. There are a few spaces at the back of the hotel that cost a bit more. Checking in and out was very efficient and quick. We had breakfast in the dining room, our order was taken at the table and the standard very good, but the range was not the same as advertised on the website. We were seated at a socially distance and the staff wore masks. . Our room was large and comfortable, with twin beds. We got a good night's sleep. The room had a good amount of wardrobe space, TV, but the Wifi was a little slow on occasion. The bathroom was large with a shower/bath and large mirror. There was no air conditioning and as Salisbury was very warm during our stay we had to keep the window open, which faced out onto the street and may disturb a light sleeper. We were in the annex towards the back of the hotel, up a flight of very steep stairs, which may be problematic if you have a large amount of luggage or mobility issues. If you are looking to stay in Salisbury I would recommend this hotel.

We stayed 1 night in the Red Lion as we are visiting a few different places and enjoyed our stay very much. The staff are very accommodating and the hotel throughout was very clean. Our room, a double, was big enough, spotless and had all items such as tea and toiletries in secure bags so we knew nobody had touched them. We had a package which included a bottle of prosecco/breakfast/dinner and we paid for parking. This cost us £124 including parking and was a bargain.
The dinner was 3 courses and they even brought out a happy anniversary cake with candles for both of us which was a nice touch.
Breakfast was very well presented and the young man serving us couldn't do enough for us. All in all a lovely safe stay and I would recommend this hotel.

This has to be the most overated hotel with the rudess staff I have ever stayed in, in 50 years of travelling. You would think that due to the sad circumstances that must have affected Salisbury and to the general world wide virus restrictions and clamp downs, that hotels would try even harder and most do in my experience BUT not this one. Its very noisy being next to the main road and a pub, so the tranquil look of the courtyard becomes a different experience when after opening the windows in the evening as their is no a/c or fans in the room.
This was an upgraded room supposedly but despite booked for two there was just one bath towel, and one hand towel and one tiny round soap tablet, several teabags (one of each type) one paper cup and spoon. I was told that during my 3 day stay no staff would enter the room but I was given large plastic bags to keep things tidy I assumed? After checking in I was told that anything required more than supplied there would be dealt with on a as required basis!
I checked in for breakfast after a very difficult night due to the outside street noise and revellers. I asked for a full English breakfast and was given 1 egg, 1 sausage, small piece of bacon, and some tasteless beans oh yes 1 slice of toast, I was not offered any juice although I did see on my exit someone drinking an orange juice. The charge was £10 for this experience inc. tea or coffee. I never went back in my 3 day stay as anywhere is better than that. But on my final escape from 'The Red Lion' I was charged twice for this breakfast but refused a paper invoice for the whole stay at this establishment even though they had printed it out and told although I objected it would be sent, over a week later I have never heard from them again. The younger ladies there are so rude it is like sitcom, they are obviously not trained and nobody there has any respect for the most important consideration the CUSTOMER, just a small point. Parking is a joke there with probably only six spaces available so you have to park next door in the public open car park. I discussed with another client there why there are A.A. 4 stars outside on the wall in the street, is this a fault of the signwriter or perhaps it was once many years ago? Its appalling and goodness knows what tourists from outside the U.K. think of this place, in a most beautiful city that so desperately needs the business.

We have just spent a week at the Red Lion using as a base to see the sights in the area. Covid has meant changes and the hotel coped admirably. A sensible and easy to follow one-way system, all staff wearing face masks, hand sanitation points at all entrances. Staff exceptionally pleasant and helpful - everyone from reception, breakfast and bar staff doing their best to ensure we had a good stay. Room was spotless on arrival, fresh linens/towels delivered and left ooutside room on request. Easy parking just around the corner included in our room rate. We will definitely return when back in the area.

Visited this hotel last week after spending some time in Cornwall and Oxford. Plan was to visit Stonehenge on way back to Scotland so after some research decided to stay in Salisbury and really liked the look of this place so we booked the Saturday night to visit Stonehenge on the Sunday.
We arrived to check in and with the sun shining on a beautiful warm afternoon the courtyard of the hotel looked absolutely stunning, the cream teas also looked amazing too.
We were too late to book parking however there is a car park 3 minutes walk from the hotel and there is also a drop off area right in front of the hotel so we unloaded and went to check in.
We had booked 2 executive king rooms and the rate was incredibly reasonable in comparison to other UK hotels in my opinion. We booked one for me and my 8 year old son and one for my wife and 12 year old daughter and this worked out cheaper than the family room.
Girl at check in was lovely ( Jade I think her name was) we were a bit disappointed at first when she informed us that they had a problem with one of the rooms and they couldn't give us rooms next to each other, however she informed us that if we didn't mind being at separate ends of the corridor she would give us an upgrade.
It wasn't really a problem for us so she informed us that she would give us the best room in the hotel, which is the Seamstress suite and there is a picture of it in the reception area. To say that the girls in the party were delighted is an understatement!
So we got keys and went to rooms, the boys executive king was also fabulous and we also got the one with the roll top bath ( 49) so lucky us. Girls went to the suite after a bit of searching and we joined them and it was fabulous , girls were delighted and my daughter didn't want to leave it.
We went down to courtyard and ordered drinks and had a look around and we were so impressed with the hotel in general that we immediately went back to reception and asked if we could stay another night , we would have been more than happy to take executive kings as planned and weren't expecting upgrade again but amazingly were given the same two rooms for the same rate of our original booking ,outstanding, and again the girls were delighted .
This hotel is was a 13th century coaching in and some of the rooms and architecture was outstanding , what an experience .
We had the breakfast and it was absolutely delicious and they were generous with the portions too.
On the Sunday evening we had dinner in the courtyard and the portions were huge and the foot delicious . Staff were great too.
Overall it was a wonderful experience in a brilliant hotel for a great price, if you get the opportunity and you are going to Salisbury you MUST stay here .
Just to add Salisbury and Wiltshire in general is absolutely beautiful, I can not wait to return.

As you walk through the vine covered courtyard, your spirits are immediately lifted, its a lovely place to sit, especially in the sunshine. Our room was across the courtyard at the back of the building overlooking the car park. The hotel says there is car parking but its insufficient for the size of the hotel but as mentioned, there is one directly behind the hotel.
Our room was up some stairs, there was a “lobby” with a chair then a really nice bathroom down some steps. The bed was comfortable and whilst the window overlooked an unattractive car park, we got a good night’s sleep as it was quiet.
We didn’t have breakfast here and we didn’t dine in. I liked the courtyard entrance which was enrobed in vines with scattered tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the sunshine. I would definitely stay here again, people with mobility issues might struggle to access the rooms as it is a very old building.
The standard of the renovations was very high and made the stay most enjoyable, the shower was large and powerful.

Dear Globabee99,
Taxi services run throughout and several local taxis are available throughout the night.
The hotel has a reception desk open twenty four hours, so if arriving late, please just ring the bell at our front entrance door and our night team will gladly check you in whatever the time of your arrival.

Hello,
There are several parking options available near to the Red Lion. We have a limited number of car parking spaces available on a chargeable basis in the hotel.
Brown Street Car Park (Council Pay & Display) is located adjacent to the hotel.
Culvers Street multi-story car park is located a few blocks from the hotel.
I would recommend contacting the hotel directly as we can advise on current charges and restrictions for all of these options.
Kind Regards
Ok, I called the inn directly. They do have hair dryers in the room, but do not have laundry facilities for guests.
You can leave washing to be sent out, but it is expensive--about £10 ($13.00) for a pair of slacks and about £7 ($9.10) for a shirt! I thought of looking for a coin operated laundry but decided against it. I am part of a tour and won't have a lot of time. Thanks!
Hi Kathy, I'm local so I don't stay there, but I'm sure they can handle laundry and will have a hair dryer. I hope you enjoy your stay. It's a nice place to visit
No - but public car parks are very near.
