In pondering where to go for a New Year's Eve we opted for a second visit to this hotel as we thought that that it had the style and Elegance that we were looking for that night

We were fortunate enough to get a suite on the second floor allbeit it is a third floor and we're not disappointed as it had the old world charm we were expecting and an upgraded updated bathroom that would not have been out of place in some of the better foreign hotels.

We had booked a 2-night package therefore had the dinner which was very modest and of limited choice due to the amount of guests there and one would suppose the price involved. Breakfast the following morning was somewhat busy but it had a good buffet and proper English food kept well served by the kitchen staff and no one who has any experience of English breakfast at foreign hotels could not fail to be satisfied.

The gala dinner in the the function room, which was beautifully dressed for the occasion, had a reception with champagne and canapes and dinner that was no better or worse than expected. There is no point in boring the reader with what was served and what was not served as that has been extensively related adnauseam elsewhere.

It was a mature crowd in general but a lively crowd who danced well to the the Disco but the band was a terrible failure playing nothing that could be danced to and featuring a very unsexy singer trying to be sexy and singing badly ..... fortunately they did not last long and the disco returned for everyone to crowd on the floor (a situation which was perhaps not unnoticed by the staff).

Breakfast the following morning followed the same pattern and even with the crowd it was expertly dealt with replacement dishes arriving. The Checkout was quick and easy and the bill simply showing the cost of those who had extras with wines drinks and food as the package had been previously paid for upfront.

Malvern is an amusing town even though it is very much up and down and there was sufficient to do to cover the 2-day package with many other places easily accessed by car.

New Year's Eve is always fraught but there could be a little complaint here and if it follows the style ambiance and class with some tweaks here and there there could be no reason why anyone would not want to return and of course use it for any other reason throughout the year.

As usual you takes your choice and pays accordingly.

C'est la vie

My wife and I had a three night stay, Sunday to Wednesday.
It is a nice comfortable hotel centrally located in the town centre of Malvern but away from the noise of the roads.

We arrived just before check-in time 3pm and there were 3 receptionists, so we were dealt with quickly and politely.
Our ground floor room was at the front of the hotel, we had a good nights sleep with the exception of the pillows which were too firm but were replaced by softer pillows next morning. We were not disturbed at all until 8.15am, by which time we were ready for breakfast. The noise was from a lorry collecting bottles for disposal.

There was a good choice at breakfast where you can eat as much as you like. Food was hot and it was nice to see a member of staff checking the temperature of each type of food and then recording it. A Continental breakfast was also available. Staff were polite, friendly and constantly clearing tables and resetting them.

The lounge bar and reception lounges are very comfortable with sumptuous sofas and chairs for relaxing at anytime of day or evening with rear views of the Abbey. There are TV’s in the lounges and you will find a number of daily newspapers available for reading.

One night we had a meal in the Priory View lounge bar which seemed quite popular with other residents. There were were plenty of options for 3 courses hot or cold also they offer Afternoon Tea until 5:30 pm.

The staff in the lounge bar and restaurant seem to work long hours but they were all polite and provided friendly service.

This was our second visit here and no doubt it will not be our last.

We stayed in a superior room in the old building for 2 nights during the August heatwave. The hotel had gone to a lot of trouble to make guests feel covid-secure, with one way systems through the hotel, hand sanitiser and distributing face masks to all guests.
The hotel is well-situated to explore Malvern on foot.
The room was clean and very comfortable, with a super-king bed and a fan to help cope with the temperatures.
Breakfast was good.
Staff were all friendly and helpful.
However....We ate one night in the restaurant which was very disappointing. As a vegetarian, there were only 2 options for me and the Thai red curry I chose was spicy but otherwise very tasteless and not at all what I’d expected from a 4 star hotel. The cheeseboard was good, however.
Hopefully the food will improve once the covid situation is easier, but for the moment, there are far better places to eat in Malvern.

Dear AADDH Thank you for reviewing The Abbey following your recent stay. I am delighted that we provided spacious, clean, well appointed accommodation in a beautiful setting. The team have worked extremely hard to implement all of the changes needed to make the hotel Covid compliant, I am pleased that you appreciated them and felt safe and secure. Thank you for your positive feedback regarding breakfast and the friendly, helpful service from the team. I am sorry that your evening meal was so disappointing. We are currently operating a limited menu as time moves on this will change, however I am pleased that you enjoyed the cheeseboard. Thank you once again, for taking the time to share your constructive comments, I hope that the positives outweigh the negatives and that you will consider returning to us again in the future. Kind regards Lesley Denyer Customer Service Manager

Booked this as a 1 night stop off to break a journey via Secret Escapes which included a bottle of wine in the room. Check in was 3pm and checking in almost immediately after that, I was disappointed to find the only times we could book for breakfast were prior to 8am and after 10:45am, hardly ideal when wanting to get back on the road or head out for the day. Room service continental breakfast was offered at no additional cost but didn't list cereal or toast, so quite what we would have got is anyone's guess. We therefore decided breakfast in the restaurant at 07:45, upon which we were only one of 4 couples at this time. I appreciate we are in different times due to covid and breakfast will be different, but had we been advised we might need to pre book breakfast before arrival we would have done as we pre booked a table for evening meal in the restaurant for the night over a week in advance by phoning up. However, that probably wasn't needed as we were only one of 3 couples in the restaurant between 7-8pm.

The rooms are rather dated, but clean, as another review mentioned, the hotel probably lacks the grandeur of its past.

A convenient location in the centre of Malvern with free parking and ideally placed for those wanting to wander in the hills, well worth the hike up for the views on a clear day which we did after check in

In these covid times, staff were wearing visors and sanitising stations were located around the hotel creating a safe environment

The room was rather warm with the old windows only possible to be opened a slight amount, so rather stuffy

Dear DavidWyOrks Thank you for your .extremely detailed review of The Abbey, following your recent one night stay. The hotel team have worked diligently to make the necessary changes to make the hotel Covid compliant. One of the big changes was that we can no longer serve breakfast as a buffet and this meal is now a plated service. We have therefore had to introduce booked meal slots to ensure social distancing and to assist the team with this busy meal service, sadly we are unable to offer our full room service breakfast menu. The safety of our guests and staff is of paramount importance and we are following Government advice, so one way systems are in place, hand sanitisation stations ae dotted around the building and guests and staff have to wear PPE, I am delighted that you felt safe. I am pleased that certain aspects of your stay met your expectations but I am sorry others did not. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us and to share your feedback. Kind regards Lesley Denyer Customer Service Manager

Firstly, we were under no illusions things would be very different with the current Covid status .. the hotel is friendly and spacious(although photos cleverly omit the attached ugly ‘travelodge’ style part totally not in keeping with the rest of the beautiful building!) there was an effective one way system and plentiful hand sanitising points .. the room was large and clean, toiletries and tea/ coffee given out at reception and not replaced after room cleaning you need to get them yourself. The major let down was the food .. no tablecloth, napkins, condiments not a problem.. the menu was sparse and consisted of only soup to start then burger and chips, fish and chips or salads ! Not what we expected at all from a 4* hotel even given the current conditions .. the fish on batter was very soggy and the burger dry, both inedible.. the manager was polite and curt assured me no one else had complained.. and we were offered alternatives and refunded.. very disappointing as was breakfast .. service was poor and food equally so. Had a reduced menu been explained that’s fine .. expectation is reduced .. but to not cook food well and make no apologies is not on. Other residents we spoke to felt the same.We ate out very well in town the following couple of days. It is also worth noting as a health care worker myself no masks were worn by staff ( apart from cleaners) gloves were worn but not seen to be sanitising between tasks.. other restaurants and pubs in town were the opposite.. masks worn and frequent hand sanitising which made me feel more secure .. all in all disappointing and certainly not worthy of a 4* rating.

Dear Venture518625 Thank you for reviewing the hotel, following your stay in July. I am pleased that your enjoyed our lovely, peaceful location and that you found the team friendly and welcoming. It is always disappointing to receive negative feedback and I am sorry that so many aspects of your stay failed to meet your expectations. The hotel has had to make numerous changes to our usual standards, to comply with new regulations and to allow us to re-open. This includes operating one way systems, enhanced cleaning, modifications to service styles and reduced menus at all meal services. I am sorry that we failed to meet your expectations of a four star hotel. Thank you for sharing your constructive feedback. Kind regards Lesley Denyer Customer Service Manager

The hotel was easy to find perched on its hilltop location. You can’t miss the priory next door. Both quite magnificent buildings.
The hotel staff were friendly and professional and the room was reasonable and had some charm to it.
The restaurant......
I’m sure the crab in the crab cakes wasn’t fresh - very vinegary. Perhaps tinned ?
This is okay normally but not at the prices they charge . The whole restaurant set up suggested that my Sea Bass would be prepared to good standard. I can make soggy sea bass at home for a fraction of the price..... worth noting - I can’t cook for toffee.
Generally a nice breakfast , I was there early though so I can’t comment on others findings .
I would stay again but eat out in the town.

As someone in a vulnerable group in terms of Covid I was nervous of staying away for the night but I have to say the Abbey is very well organised and they have clearly thought their policy through.
Everyone is supplied with masks and there are plenty of sanitiser stations plus arrows to mark route to rooms etc.
We stayed in a king size room with a view over the abbey and the room was spotless.
The bed was huge and very comfy.
Bathroom was also spotless and toiletries were supplied in ziplock bags. This was also the case with tea etc.
The room was extremely hot but this is not the hotels fault and there was a decent (very clean) fan which we used throughout our short stay.
Breakfast was served at your preferred time slot in the restaurant which again was well spaced out and all staff wore masks etc. They came to the table to take your order and breakfast was brought to the table.
Very good breakfast although it was missing a couple of the ingredients listed BUT to be honest the good sausage and bacon more than made up for that.
Plenty of car parking at the rear of the hotel
The hotel is in a fabulous setting and it is definitely a place we will visit again and again.
One thing to note is that it’s worth booking direct for the best deal and this hotel offers excellent value for money.
Thanks again to the staff of Abbey hotel for a very comfortable and reassuring stay

Dear avidtripper2 Thank you for your extremely detailed review of The Abbey and for awarding us your top score. I am thrilled that your first pandemic stay away was so successful and that you felt safe, comfortable and reassured. The hotel team have worked hard to change our policies and procedures, to ensure that the hotel is Covid compliant. As you are aware operational standards have changed; one-way systems are in place, staff are wearing PPE, guests are issued with welcome hospitality packs, meal times have to be booked and buffets are no longer available. I am delighted we provided spotlessly clean, comfortable accommodation with a king size bed and a fabulous view over the abbey, as well as providing ample car parking. All of which your deemed as being "excellent value for money". The hotel always offer the best rates to guests who book directly, in addition we also operate a loyalty scheme to reward our valued regular guests. I am over the moon that your first post lockdown break was so enjoyable and that you are now looking forward to visiting again and again. Stay safe and please do come back soon! but there was something lacking. The food they served was basic but good, Breakfast not so good plates hot but food cold do not understand that. Compliments to one member of staff Karolina after a minor hic -cup with breakfast she was the ONLY member of staff that cleaned the table after someone and that means the edges of the table as well as the top it all very well wiping the top surface but most people and I am included put hands on the edge of the table during a meal. WELL done Karolina. The windows are so overgrown with vine or whatever it is you cannot close them this certainly needs addressing. I have been their 3 times over the years and this was the least inviting to return. Prices good general state of hotel good but some attention is needed.

Comfortable older style Hotel, in a beautifully photogenic, ivy covered building. Next to the Abbey at Great Malvern.
Room 403, 2nd floor, very warm! Good proper bath (with shower in bath).
Bed very comfortable. Hotel seemed to be quite busy (going on numbers at Breakfast), but no noise in Hotel.
Covid -19 being managed very well; numerous hand sanitising stations dotted about and one way system in place...tricky, if like me, you need to go the opposite way to everyone who DOESN’T need the lift! Staff all in masks of course and rooms aren’t serviced during your stay, understandably.
Staff at Breakfast super friendly, efficient and professional. And Breakfast was delightful even if it does feel strange ordering ALL the items you would usually pick up yourself from the pre Covid Breakfast buffet - but The Abbey Hotel waiting Staff take this in their stride, well done!
Advised by email prior to arrival to ‘Auto’ check, therefore collect Room Key from a designated place, but actually they wanted us to go to Reception for our Keys, which was fine as screens in place.
Check out was online, and advised to leave keys in the room (email earlier had asked us to post Keys in box in Reception).
Car Park on site, quite spacious Parking area and beautiful lawned garden next to Abbey itself.
The Hotel is set on a hill and the town is very hilly (!) which if you have mobility issues may cause problems, but there is much to see and it is a gorgeous area of outstanding natural beauty.
Thank you for a lovely stay - we celebrated our 60th Birthdays this week and had a fab time!

Dear firework-bang Thank you for your extremely detailed and informative review of The Abbey. I am thrilled that you enjoyed your special Birthday break and that we provided very comfortable, warm, nicely appointed accommodation in a beautiful location. I am delighted that you appreciated all of the changes that we have had to implement due to the pandemic and that you feel the hotel is managing these very well. Our new normal is now guests and staff wearing PPE, one-way systems, hand sanitizer stations and trying to reduce touch points. I am pleased that all of The Abbey team were friendly and helpful and that you particularly appreciated the Breakfast team who now serve this important meal as a plated service , as opposed to our pre Covid extensive buffet. We want all of our guests to have a positive experience and to wish to return, so I am over the moon that you had a "fab time" and that we were able to help you celebrate your 60th birthdays in style. Booked via Travelzoo for Valentine's and not disappointed. Special requests for a nice room with a view and a decent bathroom were honoured. Large free car park (down a hill/slope, so you may wish to drop off your luggage or guests at the entrance first). Warm welcome by reception staff. Nice lobby, lounge and bar areas. We had an Executive room in the original part of the building, which was very spacious, with a very large bathroom, Both comfortable, modern and spotlessly clean. Great view of the Abbey. Decent evening meal with plenty of choices on the menu, including veggie options. Very efficient staff throughout. Special commendation to Hana in the dining room. Good breakfast too - cereal, fruit, yogurts, toast, pastries as well as the usual cooked items. The hotel does seem to attract a slightly older clientele, which you might notice if you are say under 40!
