Detailed Reviews
After reading the reviews on here I decided to book for a short weekend getaway with my girlfriend and as it was only a shortish drive from Cardiff without paying the premium prices of Cardiff, it was an excellent choice.
We were going to arrive quite late for checking in but after making a short call, the friendly owner gave me her personal number to call on arrival so she could come down and open up for us, this was a very nice touch. The included breakfast was cooked fresh to order. Overall it was a nice stay and I'd recommend it to couples who are thinking of driving to Cardiff but are looking for an affordable option.

The Waterloo Hotel is located close to an industrial area and offers accommodation and services which are good value for money for business travellers.
I have book a room for single occupancy for one night and I was very pleased to stay in Room 21, which I do recommend for solo travellers.
The hotel is under new management, a family owned and run business, hospitable, friendly and very helpful, too.

Hello . I work away constantly for last 2 years , about 100 hotels visited . Never before I stayed in such a gross place . Everything here is dirty and sticky . Nothing in my room was clean , starting from coffee cups ending in the bath . Old stinking towels and multicolour linen . Gross . Topped up with draughty windows with broken blinds - quality . Selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes ends up with lady at the counter telling me that they have curry as they cooked it for a chicken anyway . Absolute hovel . Almost forgot - falling apart taxidermy on staircase which I actually pointed out to receptionist been solved with a comment - owner loves it , he’s got it for last 50 years . Welcome to Newport 1962 🤦♂️

The bathroom had cracked tiles, wasn't very clean. We wouldn't have a shower because of the mould.
The paint round the windows in the bedroom was flaking. There was stains on the chair.
This hotel is advertised as hotel bistro. The restaurant was close and there was only a limited menu. The food wasn't good and over priced.
The car park gates were looked at night, so when we wanted to leave we had to phone someone. There was no one on reception when we left so we couldn't tell anyone how we felt.
We did sent an email when we got home, they didn't want to know. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

Really friendly welcome, very helpful & efficient check in. They called us a taxi to the train station & double checked the train times for us. The bistro is being re furbished, so we ate our takeaway in the small, cosy bar and had a few drinks, chatting with the staff. Our room was huge! Sofa, arm chair, dressing table, tea & coffee. The bed was clean and comfortable and we slept well. We pre ordered breakfast the day before and it was well cooked, there was plenty of it, very enjoyable.

Room Tip: The entrance to the carpark is narrow, but doable for larger cars.

From the outside, the place looked like it was closed, however, don't let that fool you. Inside is quaint, with fixtures and fittings of a grade 2 listed building. The room was clean and spacious. It was quiet and cool.
The staff were friendly and obliging. The owner joined us in the evening. Breakfast was amazing . A full English cooked and served to perfection.
Location was ideal for my sons graduation in the icc.

We had a superior room and it was far from the truth, very basic. No food as no chef - but no alternatives (could work with the cafe opposite in the interim) due to not having any facilities in the room is only enough to make 1 cup of coffee each. The cafe wasn't open on the Sunday morning before we left so left very thirsty and hungry. The hotel isn't very welcoming and the TV is also very basic (not smart), especially when theirs nothing to so nearby.

Needed a hotel near Cardiff for the rugby. Hosts couldn’t be more helpful and friendly. Parked car and collected keycard at 11:30am. Arrived back at 10:30pm to find our bags in room and bar open where the proprietor had a drink with us and chatted about our day. Room was comfortable and shower hot and powerful. We will definitely use again.

My partner and I stayed at the Waterloo Hotel just for the 1 night, we were met with a very warm and friendly welcome. Our room was lovely, the bed was so comfortable and the temperature of the shower was perfect. The hotel was spotless. We enjoyed a chat with the family that have taken over the hotel and they are so gratuitous, down to earth and approachable. Once they have refurbished the kitchen and restaurant, the hotel will be even more of a success. We wish the family the very best of luck and can't wait to see the hotel in full swing. From the couple in room 3.
