Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
Clayton Hotel Belfast is lauded for its central location, making it an excellent base for city exploration. Guests have called out the clean and comfortable rooms, though some suggest a need for refurbishment and enhanced cleanliness.
The staff at the hotel generally receive compliments for their friendliness, but inefficiencies in meal and room service have been a concern for many travelers. While the atmosphere is perceived as welcoming, there's notable disappointment regarding the removal of pool facilities and the perception of value, with criticisms centered on overpriced services and dining experiences.

Detailed Reviews

Stayed for three nights. First night in room 636 hardly no sleep bed was too soft and all through the night could hear a mechanical noise which often woke us. Turned out it was apparently from the nearby lifts. Reception was good and changed rooms for the next two nights beds so much better slightly harder which I prefer and much quieter.
Paid for breakfast for two nights £15 pp variety of choice from cereals pastries fruit yogurt and hot choices including full breakfast although bacon was rock hard and I didn't know until last morning that you and to order the fried eggs. Stayed the first night for 2 course at £23 this was the highlight my main was braised beef was gorgeous. Main complaint was during breakfast and evening when stayed at hotel bar for a few drinks the tables were not cleaned for sometime. At breakfast very few clean tables again evening drinks empty tables left with several dirty glasses.
If you don't want to pay for breakfast there is a wetherspoons opposite hotel but I would recommend the evening meals in the hotel.
The hotel was good location from city centre I would return again.

Certainly not a hotel worthy of 4 stars as it felt average and rather tired. The heating didn’t work so room didn’t get to more than 16 degrees. After two evenings of sitting in my coat I asked for a room change (after the facilities operative had told me the heating was working … ok, it was working but it only blew out cold air!). I was given an “executive” room. Don’t bother paying for an executive room - the only extras you get are a shabby looking dressing gown and slippers, a fridge that doesn’t work and two tiny cans of fizzy pop and a bar of chocolate. Oh, and only half the housekeeping done (one of two bins emptied, no towel replacement in spite of leaving one towel to be replaced and the face cloth used for a door wedge to stop the bathroom door from banging against the washbasin had been removed). The added bonus of the “executive” room was the heating didn’t work there either but at least I was provided with a hot air blower. The gym is advertised as 24/7 but I was told on arrival it was only open 7am to 8pm. Fortunately a nice receptionist asked the night staff to leave it open so I could use it early in the morning. There are no swimming facilities even though a poster on the bedroom door said there was. The cooked breakfast was barely tepid and the toaster only browned the outside of the bread rather than toasting it. On one morning there were no staff overseeing breakfast or greeting you. The location was good but with a small amount of effort the hotel could be much improved.

Response from Jonathan Topping, General Manager at Clayton Hotel Belfast

Dear Sarah, Thank you for your review. We have recently installed a multi million pound replacement to our heating and ventilation system so I am confident that it was working well. The interface can be confusing at times and we are working to simplify this. The gym is available 24 hours per day but I'm delighted my team were able to assist your access. I hope we can welcome you back to Clayton Belfast again soon. Kind regards, Jonathan

Staff are super helpful and courteous, however basic cleanliness seems to be lacking. We as a family if 4 stayed in 325/326 (each room had 2 single beds). One of the rooms had used chewing gum sitting on the tv and there was a string urine smell from the toilet as we just dropped off our bags. Lots of dust everywhere !!!!! Like everywhere !!!!! Beds not properly made. I used the gym and the floor was absolutely filthy as was most of the machines. No cups for the water dispenser either. Breakfast I found was good. I requested poached eggs which were fresh and lots of selection topped up, breakfast staff very attentive I have to say, but again basic cleanliness was lacking. Chips still on the floor from the night before, leather chairs covered in dirt, floor socket beside us absolutely filthy with dirt. Copper lights above our table had a thick layer of dust.
The location is great for the city. Short walking distance to city hall, will we be back ???? I’d seriously doubt it.

Lovely hotel , friendly staff but some serious re-training & attention to detail needed.
Stayed for 2 nights , left to out into town at 1230 on the Saturday expecting our room to serviced . We had no water or coffee left & needed towels , I even left the hook on the door to say ‘ clean room’. We came back to nothing done , wet towels, nowhere in room to dry them , no espresso replenished for the machine which you pay that little bit extra for in an executive room, on arrival we had 4 pods for the machine, 2 chocolate, 1 decaf & 1 espresso, so only 1 of us could benefit of the nice espresso and on a 2 night stay at £450 for the wknd you’d expect them to be replaced.
Breakfast?? Shocking , embarrassing and very low quality.
Saturday morning: booked for 1015 rang down and told to come on down no need for booking
Cold bacon
Cold beans
Cold mushrooms
Horrible rubbery scrambled eggs (cold & probably powdered)
Black pudding cremated & dry (chef needs taught)
Cremated potatoe bread
Dried out soda bread & sausages probably from Syscos budget range undercooked , underwhelming & seriously bad value
Sunday
Didn’t book as was told no need day b4
Arrived at 0945 to be told no places , wait in bar . Finally seated 1000
No bacon
No sausage
No hash browns
No glasses for juice
No tea spoons to stir coffee
We actually saw a member of the kitchen staff walk thru the foyer with a packet of bacon to be cooked ( no professionalism)
A hotel knows who has paid for breakfast on booking to run out of food & not keep on top of it is just really poor.
All in all the above experiences ruined what on paper promises to be a lovely stay but very sadly did not deliver… a real shame given the hotels fantastic location

When we arrived to check in, we were greeted by a very pleasant and friendly staff member. We were given a room on the fourth floor, when we went to it and had a look we found the room small, dark and very stuffy. It also had a door as it was an adjoining room. Also the window view was of a brick wall. Having had stayed here on five previous occasions we knew exactly what the other rooms were like.
We went back to reception where we were informed they were fully booked but he would see if he had another room. He had one available on 4th floor and swapped us to it.
When we got to the second room it was much better, exactly what we had previously stayed in - bright and airy. Unfortunately the bathroom door was cracked at the top and couldn’t be fully closed unless it was given a good shove. The wired hair dryer in the room was a hazard - when turned on it made the most dreadful noise and there was a blue spark like light inside it. Not sure if the hotel are aware as they had a plug in dryer in the other drawer but in my opinion the wired hairdryer should be removed completely as it is an electrical hazard and accident waiting to happen.
As previously mentioned we have stayed here five times before including during the pandemic and we had some negative observations on this visit. Firstly the price of the breakfast used to be £10 per person to add on in the morning. It had increased to £15 pp if booked in advance or £20 pp if booked on the morning. This is excessive price inflation for the quality of the food in my opinion. The second observation was the rooms seemed dated and not maintained. There were cracked tiles in the bathroom, missing grout, dirty marks on the room walls, stained carpet and the sound on the tv was broken and crackly. The rooms would certainly benefit from a refresh. The third negative was the pool area - the jacuzzi was removed, steam room door was broken and wouldn’t close properly, floors to the changing rooms were absolutely soaking to the point they were dangerous and the general area needed a clean.
We didn’t want our room cleaned while we were out so we left a do not disturb sign on it. When we came back we had a notice from housekeeping saying that if we wanted our room cleaned at 3pm to put the sign on the door. We were relaxing in the room at 2pm the door opened and we were asked if we wanted our room cleaned (we had not put a sign outside). On our check out day we had returned to our room after breakfast when without a knock our door opened by housekeeping followed by “sorry sorry” and closed again.
Being regular visitors to Belfast we would never consider another hotel as we loved the Clayton. Unfortunately after this occasion, we will be looking into alternative accommodation for our next trip to Belfast.

Hotel is well located and just a 10 min walk from the city hall.
Cathedral quarter bars are 20 min walk.
Good lounge and reception and food here on site is very good.
Would like to praise Paul Stafford the deputy manager who was extremely helpful and professional and an asset to the hotel.
The room was clean and beds comfortable albeit on smaller side ( std double)
Price is about right for the location
Parking rip off ..
Issue is parking as the reception send you to the NCP car park 5 min walk away
They say there is discount price but it did not work,
They give a code and you are supposed to call the number on the exit barrier as leaving the NCP but when we tried nobody answered and you are then holding up the exiting car queue. No answer so cant give the code from hotel and people waiting to exit behind …so had to pay the normal published amount of £36 for the stay ( friday 5pm to Sunday am 10pm ) that’s a rip off and makes the room an extra £18 per night
NCP at fault probably but you end up paying it

This is a very tired hotel. The room was big but completely inadequate with only one miserly plug socket located on the far side of the room from the bed. You could not use a mirror to dry your hair or charge a phone anywhere in vicinity of the bed. Housekeeping was poor with fresh towels just dumped on top of the toilet. Breakfast was overwhelmed with crowds of people and the (friendly) staff could not keep up with demand. The swimming pool is pleasant but the changing rooms are really showing their age. I was charged £4.50 for a cup of tea - extortionate as the staff member charging me acknowledged. All in all really not worth the money though it testifies to what they can get away with charging now Belfast is so popular.

We booked this trip for a 60th birthday, we let the hotel know this. We booked a family room, double room and an executive room for my parents. I paid £15 for a celebration package, this was a crap banner taped to the table and one balloon, pretty pathetic for what I paid.
My parents landed to their room 614, there was no way it was an executive room, it was absolutely disgusting, there was someone else’s clothes lying under the chair in the room. The side of the door was absolutely see through, you could have put a card to the side and opened the door. The door closer had no cover on it. Every other executive room had a sign on the door and this room didn’t.
I am disgusted in the state of each of the rooms, they were all dirty, rooms were tiny, could hardly fit the travel cot into the room. Bathrooms were dirty with mould on the side of the bath etc.
We paid an absolute fortune for these rooms and the staff didn’t even acknowledge my emails, or that I told them on reception when we checked out, appalling service from a big hotel chain.

Great location with friendly & helpful staff and that is where the positive stops!
Hotel is not four star, it is in dire need of refurbishment, my room was a nice size, bathroom was pretty poor, sink plugs missing. Toilet handle held together with sealant!
Furniture and curtains all dated. Bathroom fan never shuts off! No plugs near bed.
Housekeeping only replaced towels and made bed. When I queried I was that is standard!! Not four star standard surely.
I booked through British Airways so they need to update their holiday packages as well.
I don’t like to leave negative reviews but well below standard.

Booked this hotel as a treat for my wife’s birthday
Very disappointed in this apparent 4* executive room haha hotel more like 2*. The room there was spillages of some sort across the ceiling and down the wall. Walls painted were generally tired and worn out needs refreshed. Carpet had a few stains all the furniture is dated and worn out the wardrobe had shelves missing very basic. The socket behind the kettle and coffee machine was for 1 appliance so had to keep swapping the plugs over not good. The shelve that kettle and coffee maker was on is far too high. Broken light above the bed. Then the bathroom dirty stained dated shelving around the basin and wc plug in the basin very worn out also basin had marks in it that wouldn’t wash off. Bath area with mould around silicone line and shower tile grout very dirty and stained residue in the bath and basin also times. The the pool area rusty old flakes of damp paint on the steel beams above the pool guess where the only place those paint flakes can land when they fall yes the pool. Lots of damaged walls and dampness throughout the pool and changing area. Water dispenser dirty and only gives you room temperature water very poor. The sauna broken seats and timber laths broken. The steam room needs better drainage as there’s deep standing water on the floor which means your standing in other ppls sweat not good. The men’s restroom not too clean and very dated and worn out. The breakfast which may I say was an extra cost on top of the already £200 per night executive room was very dry over heated standing under heat lamps a long time the food in those silver pan heaters where condensation builds up and drips moisture onto the food the fresh fruit very dry. Payed for it did not eat it. I was expecting a fresh cooked breakfast for a 4* hotel unfortunately we had to find somewhere else for breakfast which isn’t what you want to be doing when u 1st wake up very poor.
To sum up a very over priced over * rated hotel which Giving the location could be so good wouldn’t book again must say all the staff very polite and nothing a bother for them good staff training poor hotel
