Nestled in a prime location, Slieve Donard Hotel is celebrated by many for its awe-inspiring views and proximity to the beach. The spa facilities and overall cleanliness receive high marks, although some guests have encountered crowding and maintenance issues. Room experiences vary, with refurbishments appreciated but some reports of outdated decor and functionality problems. While the staff's friendliness is often acknowledged, service can be hit or miss, especially at busy times. Despite its charm, the hotel's value is questioned by those who cite overpriced amenities and an atmosphere that can feel dated to some.

Just got back from a stay here. Have to say apart from the natural beauty of the surroundings I was not blown away by the Slieve Donard. We booked an Executive Suite which costs £230 for weekday room, B&B and use of spa facilities. Apart from the view, the room was quite underwhelming. At £230 a night, you would expect to have a bath in your room (something I personally prioritise on any hotel stay!) but unfortunately this wasn’t the case. Not only that, the shower was a bit scummy on shower hose, around fixings to tiles and shower head itself. There were nail varnish and make-up stains on the carpet and the furniture and decor was a little outdated. I should have complained on arrival but in attempt not to make too much of a scene, mentioned the above points prior to check out. The staff member Bryony at front desk was very approachable, friendly and professional and offered me the opportunity to pass on my complaints to duty manager which I did. She offered apologies and money off our next stay and late check out but I don’t know why I didn’t think to say at the time - this stay was not worth £230 and therefore I shouldn’t have paid the full price. I did mention that I probably won’t be back to the hotel. In fairness to the duty manager, she left the consultation with the impression that I was satisfied but I do feel a discounted rate for this particular stay should have been offered. The staff in general are very helpful and friendly and breakfast was great. Generosity in terms of use of spa facilities has to be mentioned as other hotels would expect you to pay for further use following checkout. And definitely a family friendly hotel so great for young families. But all in all the stay wasn’t worth the money, it did not feel luxurious and a discounted rate should have been offered and we most likely won’t return.

Due to the pandemic we cancelled our holiday to Tenerife and stayed for 3 nights from March 6th.

I will say that the first room we were given had a lot of issues including a bad smell from the bathroom, but it's how our complaint was handled so superbly that has prompted me in giving 5 stars.

With 10 minutes I received a phone call from the duty manager who sent a housekeeper to our room. She agreed it was unacceptable and within 5 minutes 2 lovely gentlemen arrived to help us move.

Without being asked they had upgraded us to a beautiful suite, and we had an amazing break.

The suite was fitted out to the highest standard and had a large freestanding bath with coloured lights, along with a well fitted out shower room.

The living room area had two pretty settees, a gas fire mounted in the wall, and a large television.

Breakfast was local produce and delicious, especially sitting with a window view of the Mournes.

We enjoyed our break and all the more so as a few days later everything has closed due to the current situation.

We really want to say a big thank you to the duty manager for handling things so efficiently and enabling us to have a break that was even better than the one we had to cancel.

I arranged an overnight function at the Slieve Donard for 88 women. Siobhan from the events team dealt with myself right from the initial enquiry stages. I cannot praise her enough, she was a joy to work with and went above and beyond to make our event run smoothly.

We had dinner in the Chandelier room which in itself is stunning with fabulous views of the beach, the mountains and Newcastle promenade. The meal was outstanding. The quality of produce was excellent and every plate was served hot. We had a few dietary requirements within our group and all substitutions were delicious.

Every memory of staff on duty that we had any dealings with were extremely helpful, friendly yet very professional. Congratulations to all!

The rooms were all beautiful and very comfortable.

Spa facilities were excellent, very busy but yet still not overcrowded.

Everywhere was clean and tidy.

At breakfast the following morning our huge group was dealt with professionally in order not to impact upon other guests. The breakfast was exceptional with plenty of choice.

The hotel was extremely busy, without including our large group, yet all seemed to run professionally and efficiently.

Huge thanks to Siobhan and her team. You provided an excellent service and 88 ladies left your hotel without nothing but praise for you, your staff and your venue. To be honest the most common comment was that ladies wished they had booked an extra night.

Thanks again for a perfect stay. Who knows we may be I touch again for a repeat performance.

We stayed here on 04/01/2020 in a resort room. As a couple we go away on average about once a month and stay in all types of accommodations and establishments and always rate the experience fairly.
The hotel on arrival is beautiful and the location and views are stunning.
Check in was quick and friendly.
When we arrived at our resort room dirty towels were lying at the door and this is where things started to let us down.
The room was large, bright, great view and super comfy bed. Cleanliness just wasn't up to scratch there was spilled coffee on the table, dust everywhere, the bin wasn't emptied and scum around the shower drain I'm not going to exaggerate and say the room was filthy because it wasn't but this really isn't acceptable regardless of how much you are paying. Also the wooden part of the floor outside the bathroom is very uneven and possibly warped as we constantly snagged our socks on it room 330. We also had to ring for dressing gowns as none was in the room on arrival.
The pool in the spa was a great size and even though it was busy did not feel over crowded.
Our dinner was in the oak room and everything was delicious all members of staff were lovely especially a Canadian/American lady who I think was in charge.
The main bar I feel is not big enough for the size of hotel and drinks are a bit overpriced if you are comparing them to other spa hotels of similar standards.
As we had a late night we did get room service. On the phone my partner was told we would get a selection of sandwiches and asked how many people where in the room. What arrived was honestly a joke for the price we paid two ham and cheese sandwiches I will let the picture speak for itself.
Breakfast was lovely and plenty of choice but unfortunately again it was the let down by attention to detail, no butter knives on our table, no teaspoons to stir the coffees and no tongs in the sugar cube pots.
Overall the location is beautiful but standards let the hotel down.

We stayed overnight at the hotel on 12/13 September. Whilst this hotel has the most wonderful views, and looks marvellous from the outside and main entrance, this is where it ends. The room was most definetly not a 4* room. The wallpaper was torn off the wall as you entered the room, and part of the shower head was missing to reveal excessive dirt behind the missing part, never mind the shower nozzle needing to at least be cleaned. The roof fan was covered in dust. If any of your party are vegan/vegetarien, forget it! Breakfast comprised an apple after being served possridge made from full fat milk and then2 quorn sausages which were served to my husband as part of his full Irish breakfast request. When the replacement quorn sausages arrived, they had been cooked with the non veg food and were inedible. We dined in the Percy French restaurant and the food resembled a local promenade chip van. A veg curry comprised 3 pieces of veg, fish swimming in grease and watching the mushy peas being scooped out of a large tin. Frozen chips under cooked and a sirloin steak that was half fat. The handdryer was broken in the female toilets in Percy French and no paper towels and to top it off 2 of the toilets not working and the remaining 2 overflowing. we did report this as we are in the midst of a pandemic and clearly no-one checking the toilets. The only real positive was the excellent staff. A Spa with children jumping in on top of you and beds reserved whilst no-one sat on them but no-one to sort it out. The noise in the Spa from the roaring children was dreadful. Over priced, needs updated and renovated and the food needs a complete rethink. However the surroundings are magnificient and clearly this hotel dines out on location. Have to say we were totally shocked at the service and moreover the really poor food. Would not pay the money again as there are many other alternatives in the area at half the price.

Expected more even given it had only opened it should have been better organised. Positive room was large bed was best ever and pillows super loved we had walk in shower and bath and view of mournes.they had left ample supply of towels and hygiene products but should really leave adequate supply of coffee milk biscuits and water as only enough for first evening as no house keeping Visit we did go to reception and they sent up more but really shouldn’t need to.On our first night we went to bar for a drink absolute disaster we waited for anyone to take our drinks order the lady behind the bar maybe American came to the table beside us and began to pet a dog she then took our order not difficult 2 drinks she didn’t wash her hands or sanitize and then proceeded to serve drinks seriously! We are all wearing masks sanitizer every door we enter ! And then sent the wrong drinks we left as we had dinner reservations. There are a lot of very young obviously new staff all eager but not trained up.The breakfast is a disaster first morning was stone cold the young staff didn’t know which table they were going to the fruit salad consisted of melon only one piece of apple! the toast was cold on arrival and stone cold when breakfast arrived ! That being said we went to Percy french and they have exactly same issues very young new staff but the manager James seemed to have managed to have enough experienced staff to direct the inexperienced to keep everyone’s orders moving. The hotel really needs to address the breakfast and room issues ASAP as this hotel is not cheap and could not justify the price for the level of service on offer while we all appreciate that this has been a difficult year this hotel should have been better prepared.

Let me start by saying that the Slieve Donard hotel has always been there in my life, so this is not an easy review to write. I summered in Newcastle as a kid, ate lunch at the hotel with my grandparents. I was even married there 7 years ago, and it was perfect. I maintain the physical location, and the real property itself, means that this could, with the right soft product, be one of the World's Great Hotels (WGH).
Stayed for 2 nights on a dinner B&B package to touch base after a long COVID pause.

Positives - lovely room with sea and mountain view. Calm.

First warning was at check in, when I was asked how much I wanted placed as a hold on my credit card for incidentals. I understand the principle of placing a hold for a reasonable amount, but I have literally never, in decades of travel, and thousands of hotel nights, been asked this question. Do you really want clients to 1) have to decide at check in how much they will spend, and then to worry about hitting that limit, or do you want them to 2) relax, and spend freely? I don’t pretend to understand the hospitality industry, but I assume 2) is better than 1). 99.9% of my previous hotel checkins globally seem to agree.

Dinner. Nothing available from 1830 to 2100 for dinner. If you sell dinner, B&B packages, shouldn’t you keep a few tables for residents for dinner time? So we sat down at 2100, after trying at 2045 and being rebuffed. Turns out the wine list was the bar list, one has to ask specially for the normal wine list, and many wines were not available. Staff and managers were hilariously clueless about wine, manager recommended the one she found got her tipsy fastest. Not even close to good enough for a WGH. Food was average, except we were still waiting for dessert at 2310, because all staff efforts seemed to be focussed on getting set up for breakfast. Don’t offer 2100 seatings if customers have to compete with domestic duties.

On and on. Annoying issues with trivial housekeeping since staff apparently service rooms until noon, then focus on checkouts exclusively until 3pm. Again, I understand from a process perspective, but maybe keep it invisible to guests and have a little flexibility? A WHG would.

I raised some of these issues, and a few more, with a manager at checkout. He accepted that they had staff challenges. I am sympathetic to challenges of COVID, Brexit, etc. but frankly you can run a downmarket hotel with casual staff and low prices, or an upmarket hotel with good staff and corresponding prices. Right now, the Slieve Donard is charging upmarket prices for a downmarket product. Shame.
I hope someone fixes the soft product soon – the hard product, and my memories of this great old institution, deserve better.

I hope to return one day, but not until things get a lot better.

My wife and I stayed in the hotel on 29th February 2020, using a gift voucher we had received. The 1st March was our 45th wedding anniversary. After we had booked we were contacted and informed that the Spa was closed for refurbishment but we could select another date or receive a room upgrade for our existing date. We chose the latter.
On the day of our arrival Storm Jorge had hit, no fault of the hotel, and we decided to contain ourselves in the hotel that afternoon, as it was pouring and very windy. We ordered some drinks in the bar, only to be told that we were required to pay cash, as their system for doing room charges was down and they'd no idea when it would be working again. I spoke with the Duty Manager, who sorted this very quickly.
Our room was 312, we were disappointed that it wasn't just as grand as we had hoped for, considering it was supposed to be a complimentary upgrade. The room we should have been given would have been very disappointing!
The room was cold, even though the radiator was warm. I would also challenge the Duty Manager to inspect the area at the bottom of the shower screen and the bath...it's absolutely filthy and this level of cleanliness in a 4 star establishment in the 21st century is totally unacceptable.
The bar and restaurant areas were far from warm. The Maitre D' moved us from a very cool area in the restaurant to a table in front of the ornate gas fire. We had a fabulous meal with wonderfully attentive staff who are a credit to the hotel. The bar staff were equally as good although they were clearly overwhelmed at times by everyone remaining in the hotel because of the horrible weather....not the fault of the hotel.
All the staff we came into contact with were excellent and the restaurant food fabulous.
Cons: No way should a hotel of this 4 star standard be uncomfortably cool in both public areas and bedrooms in the 21st century. It's not acceptable to say that it's a 150 year old building and hard to heat. We've stayed in Gleneagles and Turnberry, similar buildings and they're warmer in winter.
Openly visible dirt and filth in a bathroom is certainly unacceptable and the management need to note this and address it with housekeeping.

Just returned from a two night stay with family. I was excited for our stay and was happy when we got an upgrade to what we were told was a sea view room upon arrival (which wasn’t really as our room was at the side of the hotel - see photo). Upon arrival in the room we had to put the heading on as the room was freezing. The bed was massive I don’t think I have ever seen a bed so big. however my excitement was short lived when the first thing I noticed on the throw on the bed was lots of stains (see photo) so obviously these are not washed. We took it off the bed and sadly during the night would have used it as it got cold again but I couldn’t bring myself to put it back on the bed, the big bed was comfy despite this. The bathroom door would not close properly as it swelled from the water from the shower so we had to be forceful with the door and the screws were coming off the handles - I was worried we would have broken it. Breakfast was a very busy experience. We had to ask for coffee and toast several times and by the time it came we were halfway through our breakfast. Breakfast was plentiful but I really did not enjoy the sausages - they looked so appealing but sadly they had a weird taste and everyone in our party agreed. The potato bread and soda bread was very dry but the poached eggs were delicious. Apart from that their was plenty to choose from. Breakfast on the 2nd morning was equally as busy and we had to wait around 20 minutes to get seated. Every member of staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. The spa area was lovely, the pool was warm and the views were stunning. We ate in Percy French and the food was good. Would I rush back to the Slieve Donard I’m sad to say probably not. I think that a good overhaul and upgrade of cleanliness needs done which is sad giving this iconic hotel it left us feeling very underwhelmed.

This stay was on first day of reopening post lockdown. When booking I was told that booking slots for the pool would be arranged at checkin, however on the way I telephoned at midday (remembering this was day 1) and the only slot available was 2.30pm which was surprising, so the walk in Tollymore had to be abandoned. On arrival due covid procedures huge queues resulted in a 30 min checkin time however this gave me chance to nip down to the spa and book a 3.35pm swim (which wasn’t available earlier)
On this occasion I could only book a classic room on the top floor but it was well presented and very clean as expected, the only down side was the Sea Gulls dancing on the wafer thin roof all night!
The spa area is lovely but ruined by one mature couple who thought they were on holiday in Benidorm jumping into the pool and playing ball in the middle to the amusement of other more respectful guests.
I ate in Percy French which was very underwhelming. Simple and sufficient but the menu is extremely limited and the room lacks character, nothing more than an open space with a few cheap quality tables thrown in - staff were very friendly.
Back in the hotel bar, we ordered two Irish Coffee. The order must have been passed done a line of several staff before someone was given the order to make it - it arrived half and hour after it was placed by some American lady who presented as though everything was wonderful.
Breakfast is in a lovely setting especially if you get a window seat and due covid it’s all served at your table. Again, there where so many staff yet there seemed to be no structure as to who did what. Two different staff asked to take my order, brought toast straight away despite asking for it to be left to the end. Hot dish was brought to the table before cold dish finished and then tried to fit it all onto the table without clearing away the empties! You really couldn’t have made it up - this is a lovely hotel I enjoy staying at but the service really needs sorting out without delay.

On our visit I was not aware of any dogs being in the Hotel. Suggest getting in touch with Hotel directly, staff very friendly and will be able to talk you through all the options.
