City Hotel's central location earns high marks from guests for its proximity to tourist attractions and views of the Peace Bridge. The hotel's atmosphere is considered lively, thanks to regular live music, but some guests feel the decor could use an update. While the staff's friendliness and the hotel's cleanliness are often commended, opinions on value are less favorable, with complaints about high parking and room costs, as well as food quality. Room amenities and service have received mixed reviews, with some citing a need for improvements in both areas.

I booked a standard room for 2 nights bed and breakfast at a very reasonable price. When booking I stated it was for a 30th birthday trip and was a little disappointed the hotel didn’t do anything to acknowledge this. On arrival our room wasn’t ready and we were advised to take a seat and order a drink which we could charge to our room. Well we sat and waited and then approached the bar to order a drink but was advised it was table service only. We waited another 20 mins and no one came to take an order from us at all. This happened on a few occasions in the lobby and I was disappointed as could see plenty of staff behind the bar and it was never very busy. The standard room was fine, clean and a decent size. However a fridge and a shower screen instead of curtain would be much more hygienic. We had room service breakfast on both mornings which arrived on time and the food was fresh and hot. However I was disappointed there were no pastries, croissants etc to order. Possibly available in restaurant but no option to order on room service form. Hotel is ideally located and has free secure car parking which a lot of other hotels don’t have in this area. On checkout it turned out we had been overcharged £40 on arrival which the receptionist apologised for and refunded. All in all a decent hotel but I don’t think I would return, there are much better hotels close by.

Stayed here as we had to attend a funeral in Derry. We were offered Sunday Saver for £89 for one night, this included 3 course meal and a room upgrade. Meal was really nice only negative point was the music in dining room was too loud, we couldnt hear ourselves speak. However we brought this to attention of waiter and it was turned down.Room was lovely and really apreciated complementary soft drinks in fridge. Also bathroom xtras like toothpaste.
Stayed in Bishopsgate hotel previously but personally think city hotel is better. Will be back soon.

The hotel is in an excellent location. 15 minute walk from the train station. 5 minutes from Derry walls and shopping. We arrived on the Saturday Morning to a very stylish reception/Lobby area and a warm welcome from staff. We got to our room, which was underwhelming for the price we paid- the decor could do with a refresh, the bathroom was basic, the tv was temperamental often loosing signal and cutting off however the room was clean and could not be faulted in its tidiness. We decided to book into the hotel’s restaurant that evening. This is by far the Achilles heel of the hotel. We were seated and provided with a food menu; starter and main courses only. The waitress took our drinks order despite us not having a drinks menu- we requested a drinks menu but were informed that they did not have one. We then ordered our food. Roughly 10 minutes after placing our drinks order we still had not received them.. My partner ordered a strawberry daiquiri, the barman came over and informed us that there was no strawberry’s and we opted for raspberry daiquiris in place. Our starters arrived and after another 10 mins the original waitress informed us that there was no strawberry’s. After finishing our starters our drinks finally arrived. The main course couldn’t be faulted, we requested. Dessert menu, again they didn’t have one and the waitress told us the desserts and we took our pick. For the price we paid we had hoped for better. Breakfast wasn’t much better- with flavourless eggs and “continental breakfast” consisting of 3 types of pastry’s and apple/orange juice. Overall the abysmal restaurant and the mediocre room accompanying the price is what caused the rating to drop to 3/5. Expected more of a 4* hotel.

We stayed in the city hotel for a family break & we had a lovely time . The hotel itself is lovely and the food in the restaurant in the evening was a 10/10 . We had the 3 course menu and each course was beautiful . The hotel itself is the perfect location no taxis are required all pubs / tourist spots and restaurants are in walking distance . You can also get to a beach in Donegal in 20 mins (driving) . The reception staff and porters were so polite and helpful a credit to the hotel . I would 100% stay here again . A great all round trip . I would recommend doing the walking tour for some history we used Mccrossan city tours £4 per person would highly recommend . We also had coffee/ice cream and food at dairy girls /badger pub would also recommend (you will find this at starting point of tour).

We visited the City Hotel in Derry for a meal to celebrate a birthday. It is really great to be able to dine out with friends again. The Hotel Management have put in place gentle but affective COVID track and trace and discrete hand sanitisation stations. The staff in the restaurant were very welcoming and set us at ease as some of our party were from the south and it was their first dining experience in nearly two years. The staff were very attentive Carla really looked after us with the waiters and waitresses pleasantly serving us our food. The food was beautifully presented and tasted equally as good. I thank the management and staff for a beautiful evening and I will certainly be back.

Just returned from a 2 night annixersary break at The City Hotel.

Arrived to find the car park of the hotel completely full and not accepting any new cars which meant parking in Quayside next door which cost £24, not a brilliant start!

Check in was quick however with plenty of hand santisers everywhere, however no one in the hotel except the staff wore masks.

The room was very basic and a bit shabby but clean and had a good view of the Peace Bridge and the Guildhall. Even though it was our anniversary, nothing was left in the room not even a note.
Also because of Covid-19 you don't get your room cleaned only if you ask reception.

Restaurant is lovely and staff are very friendly and attentive. They had a good range of food options and vegan options which were tasty. However, breakfast had no vegan options and you have to ask for alternative milk as nothing is out.

Location was brilliant, close to everywhere for shopping and everywhere is within walking distance including the Tower Museum and the hidden gem which is the Craft Village. Location is what made us book the hotel in the first place.

The bar left a lot to be desired, it was always busy with few seats available. Table service is a nuisance as bar staff on our last night left us to sit for 35 minutes without asking us if we wanted a drink and served everyone else around us so we left. One bar man was standing around talking to a group for at least half an hour instead of serving. Very poor service at the bar which left us feeling disappointed.

Clientele in the hotel were often rude and ignorant with a family coming into the lift with us after
ignoring the clear signs which said 1 party per lift.

Thankfully our experience of the city hotel isnt too tainted and we would stay again purely for location and hopefully standards will improve.

Stayed at City hotel on 20th Feb 2020 as part of my mother’s 60th birthday celebrations on the recommendation of friends and family. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectation...
On arrival, I paid for an upgrade on the room as an extra treat. We were shown to a decent room with lovely views of the river and unpacked. We began to notice a loud banging noise noise coming from the bathroom so contacted reception who sent someone up immediately to investigate. The gentleman agreed and had us moved almost instantly. we repacked and moved to an almost identical room.
Dinner was booked for 8pm and we arrived around 8.05pm to the restaurant that was not too busy. The table next to had just finished their mains when we arrived. Our order and drinks was taken swiftly but our starters and drinks did not arrive until we actually asked where they were at about 8.45. Soup was lovely.
Mum had ordered beef cheek without garlic mash opting for champ instead. I ordered creamy pasta and garlic potatoes. Around 9.20pm our mains had still not arrived so we asked again...food then arrived immediately. The table beside us still had not had their main plates cleared.
Mums arrived on garlic mash with a side of raw champ. My potatoes were fine but the pasta was cold. I tried to eat it without causing anymore fuss to an already spoiled special birthday meal.
We raised our disappointment to duty manager Brian politely after the meal and were assured he would ‘sort us out’ at check out as he accepted service was ‘not good enough’ and not of their usual standard.
When we returned to our room that evening the key would not work so had to go back to reception for replacement. When I got into bed, feeling quite ill after dinner I had to get back up as I was violently ill. I believe because I was eating cold creamy pasta so late at night.
On check out, there was no form of apology or compensation so we spoke with day time duty manager, Gareth (I think that is correct). He apologised profusely again and assured me that Brian would call me back. We checked out on Friday and finally received a call back on Monday offering us a free upgrade and meal on our next visit. I politely declined as we did not wish to stay again. I explained I would accept a refund of the small upgrade fee paid as compensation but was advised he would need to speak to his General manager and call me back tomorrow (Tuesday).
It is now Saturday, I have called twice since and still no response.
Very disappointing service.

We stayed at the city hotel last weekend for 2 nights. The hotel staff were brilliant and very attentive but the hotel itself needs a makeover. Our room was very old and tired and was in desperate need of a makeover. There was mould in the bathroom and cracked tiles on the floor. The hot water tap in the bath wouldn't work which means I couldn't bath my daughter and had to shower her.

The windows were very thin and you could hear a lot of road noise and the doors were very thin which meant you could hear people walking past your room at night and knocking on doors further down the hallway. There was no hairdryer in our room which we had to go down to reception and request as the phone in our room was not working to ring down to reception.

The pool was great but you were limited to 45 minutes which wasn't great and the changing rooms could of been mopped more often as the floor was very dirty.

The parking was great if you can get a space. If you're driving, get done early to make sure you get a free space.

If you're staying over, don't bother getting breakfast. It isn't great and you could Probably get nicer food in a cafe close by. We didn't eat dinner in the hotel as we had lunch on the first day and it was average. We ate in quaywest both nights which is just down the street.

Check in is 3pm but we didn't get our keys until near 3.30 and had been in the hotel from 12 which wasn't great. People were getting rooms before us who had just arrived in after us.

Location of hotel is fantastic and there is lots to do near the hotel!

This hotel is more like a 3 star hotel. Not overly impressed for the price paid.

My Husband & I stayed in the City Hotel on Saturday night for a family get together.
Once arrived at this hotel we were greated by Gerry welcoming us to the hotel, he immediately took our luggage with great efficency and with a very speedy check in by very friendly staff, accompanied us to our room, placing our luggage on the luggage rack and hangin up our coats. Gerry was very friendly on our arrival and departure. Well done Gerry. A gentleman with top quality service.

Stayed on Valentines night and availed of the valentines package deal. All staff were very professional and friendly. We had a 3 course meal, the food was delicious and there was no big wait between courses. While they were clearly busy they staged the tables so the restaurant did not feel overcrowded. Restaurant staff were attentive but not intrusive. The room we booked was spotless and comfortable with a beautiful view of the river and peace bridge. We had a very pleasant experience and I would definitely consider staying here again, I would not hesitate to recommend the city hotel to anyone thinking of visiting.

24/7 laundry is a 5minute drive (Creggan Rd) and LaundryHeap do a laundry (collection) service with 24hr turn around. During normal hours, there are a few self service laundrettes within a few minutes walk of the hotel. City Laundry on Northland Rd and Laundrette on Maureen Avenue are probably the closest. The hotel staff will give you more info if you ask at reception
