Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Montrose is my childhood hometown and I try to revisit fairly often. Having stayed at Oaklands Guesthouse many times over several years (most recently in Sep 2022) and whilst it's been in various ownerships, I have recommended it to friends and family many times..... but I am afraid that I can not do so from now on. We had a very specific reason for our visit this time (i.e. it wasn't just a nostalgia trip). Therefore, some months ago, I booked two rooms at Oaklands Guesthouse for specific dates in June and telephoned a week prior to our visit to confirm everything was still okay. On the day, after a nine hour drive and arriving at approx 6pm, I was shocked to be told that there were no rooms available. In fact, Amy seemed totally confused and didn't seem to have any knowledge of our booking despite my telephone conversation with her only a week prior. We returned to our car and spent some time phoning various places to find accommodation. Fortunately, we found a hotel which could accommodate us for the nights of our visit but at a price more than twice that for which we had originally budgeted. After many previous stays without any complaints, I hate writing disparaging comments about Oaklands Guesthouse but must tell it how it happened. Sorry, Amy, but having been let down once, how can I trust that future bookings will be okay.

I was welcomed with a big smile from Amy, she was relaxed and very helpful. Sorted out a lovely restaurant for us to visit in the evening. Amy had said the room I was in was recently decorated, It was very comfortable and clean. Thanks you Amy and Ron

Great breakfast, including the poached eggs and service. Couldn't be more accommodating to our needs. Nothing was too much trouble. Even flasks being made ready for 5am. A good night's sleep and will be staying again

Very welcoming, homey and cosy, food was amazing and very festive. Rooms were lovely and views of the waterfront just around the corner.Amy and John who manage the guest house could not have been friendlier or more accommodating.

Friendly staff and very well situated near town centre. Room very basic but that was expected given the price. Stairs leading up to room were very dirty not been hoovered for weeks, room had very dirty wallpaper could do with a paint. Could not use drawer in bedside cabinet as it had not been cleaned. Bathroom very dated and also could do with a deep clean. Despite the poor cleanliness of this guest house the sheets and towels very indeed spotless. Breakfast was nice no complaints. Fridge available in breakfast room for guests to store food and cold beverages however it was covered in split milk which was still there the next day. Would return if I knew it would be cleaned.

Thank you for your honest review. I apologize for dated decor, we hope to improve this soon. We have arranged a cleaning schedule to hopefully ensure the cleanliness of the guest house and we apologize for the problems you encountered. Although it is not an excuse, we recently suffered a bereavement which has made this a difficult time for us. We should not let this get in the way though of ensuring our guests enjoy their stay. We are very glad you enjoyed our breakfast and found the sheets and towels spotless. I hope we can continue to improve our service and make the guest house an enjoyable place to stay. Thank you again for the honesty, it is reviews like this that will truly help us improve and make much needed changes.

Great place to stay. Good location Fiona and Ron the owners, are very welcoming, they took over the ownership in May 2017. Comfy bed, good Wi-Fi, plenty of parking, fab breakfast. They have their own chickens and collect eggs for the breakfast. Dog friendly.

Enjoyed every moment of our stay at the Oaklands. The new owners are just wonderful and took extremely good care of us. The breakfasts were outstanding, the room was very comfortable and it is perfectly situated for walks into Montrose. We were there for a U.S. Navy Edzell Reunion and they made us feel like we were coming back home.

Good food, friendly staff, and in a good location for touring the area, there are a choice of rooms depending on your requirements, they are reasonably priced and as its just under new management the staff are upgrading which will make it even better.

I recently returned for a stay at Oaklands and was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was under new ownership. The previous owner Mario, has moved on to Australia and I wish him good luck. The new owners, Fiona and Amy intend, gradually, to refurbish Oaklands while maintaining it as affordable accomodation. Its a lovely stone house with parking outside and is a 8 minute walk to Montrose town centre. The rooms themselves are en suite and comfortable. Fiona and Amy have continued the Oaklands tradition of providing a hearty, freshly cooked breakfast. If you want an affordable, traditional guest house with a great atmosphere and a warm welcome, then Oaklands is the place for you. Highly recommended!

Lovely welcome from Mario. The oaklands guesthouse was a modest guesthouse on the main road into Montrose. It had everything that we wanted. Was close the river & lovely pub for dinner. Would recommend.
