Detailed Reviews
Location: Excellent right on the front within walking distance of the ferry terminal, but clear of the fish ‘n chip and tourist shops. Building: Large Victorian hotel on the sea front cleverly adapted by MGM Muthu to the modern world. I paid a bit extra for a sea view, but it was well worth it for splendid view over the bay. Car parking (can be a problem in Oban) Good, there being just enough round the back for late September. Reception: (2 young ladies) was efficient and charming. They were very helpful later when I needed somewhere to park my hired e-bike in an outhouse. The bedroom was not lux, but perfectly good and did the job. Good WiFi. The en-suite bathroom had everything one needed including plentiful very hot water. The decor in the bedroom and throughout the hotel was slightly curious by UK tastes, no doubt, attribute to the subcontinental origins of the MGM Group who should probably decentralise furnishings/decor into a national rather than a global group basis, but who am I to say.? It’s their hotel, not mine! Breakfast was excellent with space, service, layout (all buffet) to cope well with the big turnover - none of the panicky queuing for coffee, toast or waiting for service of hot food you encounter in some hotels. Housekeeping was meticulous leaving the bedroom really tidy with coffee, milk, biscuits, complementary chocs etc replaced daily (even on a Sunday) which is not always the case in other hotels and guesthouses. MGM must have good recruitment, training and remuneration policies as all the staff (mostly East European) were polite and helpful seeming happy to be there and always saying ‘hello’ with one exception (see below). I was surprised in what must be one of the wettest environments in the MGM empire, that there was no drying room or other facilities to cope with guests returning with garments soaking from marine, golfing, hiking and other activities for which Oban is famous. To their credit reception did provide (rather small) complimentary umbrellas. I consider the pricing at £90 per night for double bedroom with sea view and breakfast, very reasonable. All in all, though not luxurious, very serviceable. Would I stay again? Yes I would. The only bad experience was a rather cocky, unhelpful bearded youth standing in on reception Sunday evening, but he was probably new to the job and inexperienced/ insecure or maybe (the impression he gave) just too important to be on reception at all. Or maybe my attitude was wrong.

We stayed here 3 nights B&B 11-14 August 2020. Our sea view room 6 on the third floor was very clean and comfortable. Only one bedside table! A well fitted bathroom, very clean. Lounge is smart and comfortable with an outside decking area. Drinks are reasonably priced. Our room was serviced each day (unlike the Glenburn at Rothesay the previous month when we had to make up the bed ourselves each day!). The staff were extremely polite and cheerful. Social distancing exercised efficiently. Plenty of choice at breakfast. My only gripe was hard fried eggs each day! We did not dine in as there are several excellent restaurants in Oban and thanks to Dine Out to Help Out it was less expensive than usual. The hotel was generally very clean with relatively new carpeting throughout. The decor reflects the owner's Indian subcontinent roots but high quality curtains and carpeting.
It is a much higher standard than the Shearings Great Western (currently closed) and has plenty of parking. We checked out various B&B hotels on the Coran Esplanade but all were serving (continental) breakfast IN YOUR ROOM!! And all were considerably more expensive. We will return but will go for an executive sea view room next time, bigger room dual aspect windows and only a few pounds extra. We recommend this hotel.

We booked our stay with the deluxe sweet with a sea view and asked for the anniversary special (flowers and champagne). Was quite disappointed from the beginning, our room is on the ground floor and even though we have a sea view, we are seeing more of a car park and it’s a lil awkward just sitting and staring out the window and people keep coming to their cars and staring at you. However, the worst part is that we were put next to the toilets… the bar doesn’t close until midnight so we’ll be hearing the doors and dryers all night. I’ve asked for a different room, but they are booked and reception told me that the toilets were not being used… told her that we have heard them going since we got to the room. We went to the bar and waited for 10 minutes and no one came… so we just went somewhere else. Really haven’t had a good experience since we’ve been here… doesn’t seem worth the £250+ we spent for one night… the staff is very welcoming, but I wouldn’t recommend staying here unfortunately.

The view is incredible & free parking. Good pool with safety precautions for Covid.
The downsides were the staff were very poorly trained. I asked for a taxi which they booked but had no idea which company it was booked with when it failed to arrive. When we asked come they phone a few companies to determine if they had a booking the night porter knew no phone numbers! We nearly missed our ferry and would have done so without running along the waterfront with 2 very heavy bags. They told me instant coffee only no idea if Earl grey tea might be available. In actual fact we subsequently ascertained filter coffee was available. No slimline tonic or juice at bar so as alcohol free was offered tap water or soda water. Not ideal. Our vegetarian take away breakfast was ham and cheese sandwich to be fair a cake and a banana too but less than ideal to be given meat. The breakfast waiter had no idea what was possible as he stated he had only been here 3 days. Clearly no training as one should have been very much within memory fortuitously there was a kind waiter to step in as I was informed instant coffee I would not expect to wait nearly half an hour for a coffee either at breakfast for £180/ night. I could add this was after I asked again….

My family and I recently stayed at your hotel on Monday 18th to 19th. We were allocated room number 56.
We were very disappointed with the hotel and staff for a number of reasons and on top of this now we have contacted hotel in various occasions now with complaints after paying £175 for hotel and being very disappointed to only be ignored in person, phone and email.
1. The hotel room door would not lock easily and when I approached a staff member, their advice was not helpful and I eventually figured it out for myself.
2. The bathroom light did not work which was not ideal as we had to use our own light source to use the bathroom.
3. There was someone else’s litter still in the room when we went in which really has me questioning the cleanliness of the entire hotel.
4. The toilet in our room would only flush if left for at least 20minutes between flushes. This was less than ideal for a family and something that I found very poor as basic amenities should be a given in any hotel never mind such a hotel as yours.
5. The reception staff were never at the desk when we were checking in and checking out, there was no way of ringing a bell etc to get their attention either. This resulted in us, and other hotel guests behind us, having to wait for a significant amount of time.
6. When I mentioned the above issues to the receptionist when checking out, the staff member did not apologise for the inconvenience and did not appear to care.
7. We went for a swim, however the female lifeguard on duty was on her phone the entire time which is not professional or showing any form of ‘duty of care’ to the swimmers in the pool.
8. The ‘double’ bed was in fact 2 single beds pushed together with a form of ‘mattress’ over both which was less than adequate as this was less than the width of the 2 single beds which made it very uncomfortable.
Overall, we were very disappointed with our stay especially as this appeared to be a well established hotel. Our experience definitely indicates otherwise and poor customer service when we have raised this indicates business does not care about their customers or problems they have experience . Would not recommend staying or booking at this hotel or any of their sister hotels.

+1
Stayed here for two nights as a Suprise for my birthday , my family booked it through Booking.com and wen I found out I managed to get it cheaper , so it’s worth looking nearer the time . The hotel is in a prime place overlooking the promenade and has lots of lovely sitting areas to view the beautiful scenery . I had a room on the second floor which is up five flights and I couldn’t see any Lift. The room was quite big with two singles made into a large double . Very nice drapes at the window and a nice check carpet. There was still coffee making which is a godsend for me even if it was paper cups . The breakfast we had was lovely and served to you at your table , we paid £10 each on the day , don’t book it through booking.com as they charge you £22 each ! All in all I had a fab stay and the hotel is eager to please their guests . I am glad I managed to reduce the amount paid as it’s not worth more than that it was booked originally for £270 for 2nights and I got it for £227 which is a good saving . I would definitely stay here again , as I say , it’s got lovely qualities and I am hard to please .

Paid £400 for 3 night stay for me and my girlfriend, first day, no heating on in the room, the room was freezing cold, I turned the heating on but after several hours the room was still freezing. The next morning the heating broke down, the heating did get fixed several hours later. The next day the hot water stopped working in the shower and the bathroom tap, maintenance man said he could not fix it that day. I left the next day and hot water still not working. The restaurant was also very cold, I don't think the hotel wants to pay for keeping the hotel warm. I tried to contact the manager serveral times, but I would have more chance of finding the Loch Ness Monster. Stay well clear of this hotel, if you want to enjoy your stay in Oban.

Booked a 2 night stay here for my partners birthday. Was a bit concerned after booking on reading negative reviews but cannot fault our stay. Yes the rooms are a bit "dated" but ours was immaculate and had lots of tea/coffee provisions and plenty of towels on heated towel rail. Shower over the bath had great spray and hot water throughout the day. We didn't have a sea view but that had no impact on our visit as we were out and about and were aware before arrival that out room was facing towards the rest of the property. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival and offered to assist with our luggage which we declined but appreciated the offer. On using the bar later in the evening the barman again was lovely. We didn't use pool but the procedure for booking it was explained and seemed simple enough. Breakfast was buffet style and again could not find fault as all tastes were catered for and plenty of items were available. The front car park has limited spaces but we parked at the rear of the hotel and had no issues. This hotel was more expensive than some others we have stayed but feel that the location, views and general service provided was worth it and we would return if visiting Oban. I appreciate other reviewers opinions on their experiences but I can honestly say we had an enjoyable, fault free stay.

Rarely have I stayed at a hotel which has so much potential to be grand and amazing but falls so short.
Whilst this is not the worst hotel, it certainly must be described as average at best.
It is a great old building in a superb location offering great views over Oban harbour, but feels like the owners have somewhat given up and settled for mediocrity.
The decor is dated, the rooms are tired, thin walls mean you hear everything from rooms to the side and above and sadly we were given a room next to the lift whereby the noise of the mechanics and the voice announcing which floor you have arrived at is heard clearly in the room.
The staff are pleasant and try their best.
I am sure this is a positive enough hotel for the coach trip parties that it seems to base its main business on, but if you are not after that kind of a trip, this is probably not the hotel for you especially at the price, which is certainly not value for money based upon our experience and the room we were given sadly.

The location is lovely the town of oban is great, the boat trip was fantastic. The hotel on the other hand was not the cleanest, the chairs in the dinning room were covered in dried food and stains. The room itself was fine for what we needed it for but it was not cleaned the three days we were there, the bed covers were just tucked back in to make the bed look neat didn't straighten the sheets underneath. The towels were just not changed just folded and put back on the heater. The shower had terrible water pressure couldn't move the shower head forward so it stays just like a trickle trying to wash yourself under. The staff are friendly enough. The breakfast is awful half cooked eggs, chewy hash browns and potato scones and don't think your going to get a hot cup of coffee as its luke warm when you pour it and cold by the time you get to the table. The pool is great unless u want to go for a swim on a Monday when it is closed but you will not find that information anywhere unless you book through their own website otherwise you will not know and we booked this hotel especially for the pool. The restaurant is over priced for very small portions that we're over cooked. If the staff were better trained and they clean the place alot better then maybe would think about returning but no I would not recommend staying here.
